  • How diverse is your musical taste?

    Dez 16 2009, 17h42 por noheadbody

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 8 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

    Out 3 2009, 19h08 por PurpleCow17

Neil Patrick Harris's songs from his award-hostings (The Eleven O'Clock Number and Put Down The Remote).

I always was curious as to who sang TocarHallelujah in Shrek. One of my Rinkie friends told me this week, so I found the song.

TocarLive Like We're Dying, Kris Allen's new single. It's kind of fun, but mostly unmemorable.

I listened all the way through to Adam Up, so added Boy Tell the World, Sweet Oholibamah, Listening After Midnight, The Word, Wherever You Will Sow, Hotel Can't Afford Ya, and Go Right Now.

Old stuff: Mass (why do I have this?), Little Me (Little Me), TocarHe will state the obvious (Captain Obvious Theme), The Face of Christ, Board of Governors (Anthony Warlow) (I so need to re-tag that), Father Found, My blanket and me (definitely need to re-tag that as well), Nocturnal By The Moon.

Another two episodes of Just a Minute.

    Last Time.

Some random iTunes library listening, although not much. It only yielded me Baa! We're Lambs (Parody of "Barbara Ann" By Beach Boys) and Be Thou My Vision.

I finally got TocarGold Digger (Glee Cast Version). I love Matthew Morrison a lot.

TocarSunny Days and Shadow Woman on my mp3 player, because apparently I hadn't scrobbled them yet?

    Blake Lewis's new CD.

And then all the songs Glee Cast has done so far.

A pretty decent week, I'm thinking.

Total Artists: 4018. Only two. I'm guessing John Cale and Julia Murney, because I'm fairly certain I haven't scrobbled either of them before.

Also, for the first time in weeks, Jonathan Coulton is not my #1 artist of the week. He is FIFTH, behind ApologetiX, James Marsters, Glee Cast, and Blake Lewis. I am so sorry, JoCo.

    Set 19 2009, 21h16 por PurpleCow17

Not a lot this week, and even less that's noteworthy.

Blake Lewis's new track Afraid, which I don't really remember. I think I decided to keep it because I kind of liked it.

Grail Finale - I really need to just listen to Grail.

Really? I hadn't yet listened to TocarCurl? I thought my Jonathan Coulton songs had ALL run their course in my library...

I Can't Stop Talking About Him, which I had downloaded awhile ago but was never in the mood to listen to.

After catching up on Glee, I downloaded the free iTunes video of them performing "Gold Digger" (Glee Sneak Peek: Gold Digger). And watched it about 10 times. I could watch Matthew Morrison dance for a long time...

TocarOne, which apparently Adam Lambert sang sometime on Idol. I just can't remember it.

Idag för mig, which is the Swedish version of some song from Rent.

And then I found and downloaded The Ten Commandments: The Musical. The music and lyrics are ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. So why did I purchase it? Because the cast is lovely. So that threw a BUNCH of new artists into my library, as well as songs.

And finally, it turns out I'd never added My New Philosophy to my library (what was WRONG with me?!).

So... mostly stuff I don't like all that much. Select songs from The Ten Commandments will definitely be appearing again.

Total artists in my library: 4009! Largely thanks to the many different people singing in The Ten Commandments.

Some of the new songs that made it into my Last.fm player during the past week.

A bunch of random Jonathan Coulton songs that I'd listened to multiple times on YouTube, but somehow never on iTunes. This includes TocarTake Care of Me, TocarBaby Got Back, TocarIkea, and TocarWhen You Go.

TocarAnother Postcard (acoustic) and The End of the Tour, which played on my Jonathan Coulton Pandora station this week. We'll probably be seeing more of these guys in the next few weeks.

The rest of Long Story Short by Brendan Milburn & Valerie Vigoda. Such a brilliant show. I'd listened to it over and over again on my Zune (which, sadly, is still unable to scrobble) but finally listened to it on iTunes.

There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, which I obtained from Anna. I'd heard the Anberlin version and actually prefer that one just a tiny bit, but this one is quite excellent as well.

A bunch of songs from The Wedding Singer. Yes, I know tagging it as "Original Broadway Cast" is terrible, but there's really no good way to tag cast recordings, especially whole albums. I went an saw this live for the first time last Sunday afternoon and loved it, so I acquired the cast recording and listened to it once all the way through.

Jonathan Coulton Medley - Discovered this on my search for a JoCo fix. It's an almost-15-minute-long beautiful piano medley of 13 different Jonathan Coulton songs, including most of my favorites. It's up on YouTube, but I'm so happy to finally have an mp3 copy!

  • The [insert original band name here]s

    Mai 31 2009, 1h29 por Ice_9

The more music I listen to, the more I can work out how much I'll like a band based on their name. Occasionally I'll muck up horrendously (The Acacia Strain) but often I can work it out and get awesome results ( Týr, Diablo Swing Orchestra and so on).

One set of names I tend to avoid is bands that begin with 'The' and end in 's', ie: The Somethings. Now there are exceptions but that's not what this is about. Generally, these names conjure up connotations of Indie/hipster/pop bands which isn't my kind of music. However, I realised today, that if I transformed my favourite artists names by changing it into "The [band names]s" I could completely change my opinion on the name and on what I think they'd sound like. So what I figured I'd do, is take some of my top 20 (and one or two choice selections) and see how different they would seem with the change in title.

    The Jonathan Coultons:
I'm not sure this one works too well. I think if he were really famous or a cult icon it could easily be a really infuriating indie band. I think "The Susan Boyles" would be a band that's name turned me off instantly. Feel free to take that name.

    The Dream Theaters:
This sounds more like a concept album than a band. I think I would actually buy it if it were an album. If it were a band? Probably not. Sounds like they wouldn't really know english.

    The Parliaments:
I'm too connected to Parliament, plus I know this was their name in there earliest incarnation, but I reckon this could have been a London based pop-punk band from the late 80s, early 90s. Would have fans that really should try different music.

    The Ayreons:
This would definetely be a really obscure indie band that would be brought up at the end of a game of 'No way, I like way less famous bands than you' (probably as the killing blow). It would be described with words like "Comtemporary revival soul pop" or "Smooth anti punk indie folk" leaving no-one with any clue what they sound like. Would never have more than 13 fans due to them being 'too mainstream' when they hit 14, so they lose one. Would have 4 albums out before anyone knows who they are.

    The Pain of Salvations:
While the name doesn't make a lot of sense, this would either be a hopeless emo "what's the point?" band or infact, exactly the same band as it is now, but with worse grammar and pronounciation.

    The The Lonely Islands:
This partly works, but I wouldn't listen to it. Would probably be some californian folk group or a bunch of surprisingly old bald americans in an R.E.M. style band. Would be popular, but nobodies favourite band.

    The Black Mages
This is one of the exceptions. Due to the instant link to videogames/fantasy/nerdy things, this band could never be an indie band, no matter how 'ironic' they're trying to be.

    The Pagan Minds (Pagan's Mind):
Edited this a bit, because I think "The Pagan Minds" could easily be a 70s progressive rock group from some quiet english county. Or an anti-anti-anti-folk supergroup.

    The Seventh Wonders:
This would absolutely be a 70s English Progressive Rock group.

    The Shadow Galleries (Shadow Gallery:)
This would probably sound just like one of the bands listed above, but the name sounds great, so I'd make myself like it. That seems like a flaw of mine, revealing a rather shallow personality, but I'll ignore that for now. Probably a side-project turned main project by someone who has already done that so many times, you'll struggle to remember why you know them in the first place.

    The Strapping Young Lads:

This one is what made me think of this whole blog idea. That band is so quickly transformed into a run-of-the-mill "Why are these guys 'groundbreaking'? They sound like everyone else..." artist with just 4 characters. It's rather ridiculous. With a name like this, this band could last an indie music generation (about 2 years in some version of the public eye). Would continue to make music for 15 years after everyone has forgotten them. I'm actually shocked this is not already a band's name.

That's as far as I'll go. If you got this far, you've probably tried it with your own most played lists. Post if you have any as mindblowing as The Strapping Young Lads.

So what have you learned? Firstly, names are important (remind me why I listened to Fairyland in the first place). Secondly if you can't think of a band name, slightly edit a current one. Love Starsailor? Here comes The Starsailors! No-one will notice.

I may think about trying this in reverse. The more I think about it, the more I like Libertine as a name.

(also: wow, what a journal drought...)
