  • Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

    Nov 23 2009, 12h42 por Funkafonik

    Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40+ years.

    I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

    I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

    These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

    Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
    DIVIDED BY
    Album's Total Running Time

    Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
    You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
    Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

    Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

    (**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
    (*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
    and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.

  • Discovery and Evolution: My Musical History, Pt. 1

    Dez 30 2006, 16h49 por Ramez05

    the first type of music i listened to was my parents music, which was mostly disco and 70s pop singers. i really didnt have a music preference at the time and i really could of lived without music, but when i started to figure out what music i liked my life changed.

    the story starts in the christmas of 2003 when i got an ipod. i got a fat 40 gig ipod and a itunes gift card and i was ever so happy. the problem was that i have never really looked into the music i listened to. all the music i was listening was on my local radio stations. at the time i was mostly listening to what ever music that was played on KROQ and occasionally the top 40 station. i quickly got bored of the music on those stations and started listening to classic rock radio. classic rock was essentially the first type of music i put into my ipod. with my itunes gift card i put it some Nirvana tracks that i was used to and my latest discovery Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Dire Straits. from then on classic rock became my genre of choice.

    i started downloading music via limewire of all the classic rock acts i was hearing on the radio. most of them were all the popular classic rock acts that everyone knows Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Santana, Jimi Hendrixand Black Sabbath. in my quest to discover what kind of music i liked i noticed that all my current favorite artists had something it common that i didnt realize at first. it wasnt the fact that they were all old rock n roll acts, it was the sound of the guitar in all of these bands. i quickly discovered that i loved guitar solos, guitar riffs and everything guitar related. from then my taste shifted from classic rock to guitar rock.

    being so musically ignorant at the time, i had no clue where to start on my search for guitar rock so i just googled 'greatest guitarists of all time' and 'greatest guitar solos of all time'. on the top of most of the guitar related lists i read i saw artists and songs i recognized like Stairway to Heaven and TocarAll Along The Watchtower. on those lists though i saw so many guitarist i never heard of like Yngwie Malmsteen,John Petrucci, and Joe Satriani. the first time i heard 'shredding' was when i listened to Yngwie Malmsteen. i was blown away. my taste in music now went from guitar rock to guitar 'virtuoso'.

    there were so many of them... my brain was melting. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen quickly became my favorite artists. i would listen to them shred during class in school and i would watch them shred on youtube.
    Paul Gilbert of Racer X and Mr. Big and John Petrucci of Dream Theater shifted my guitar virtuoso binge to metal and prog rock.

    i took a light break from guitar virtuosos and discovered prog rock acts like Frank Zappa, Yes, Rush, King Crimson and Jethro Tull through Dream Theater. at the same time i discovered prog rock, i discovered speed/thrash metal. Metallica's albums Kill'em All and Ride the Lightning exposed me to guitar a guitar style that i had never heard before.
    never have i heard riffs so heavy and guitar playing so agressive. through Metallicai discovered Megadeth, Slayer and many more metal bands including british metal bands such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. heavy riffs and fast licks; metal was turning out to be great and was taking up alot of my listening time, but then there was Buckethead.

    the first time i saw Buckethead was on some mtv award thing and at that time i wasnt interested in him. who would of known that he would become my favorite guitarist. at the time i was googling guitarists i frequently saw the name Buckethead and ignored him for a long time because of his awkward appearance. eventually i took the time to listen to him and i was amazed and confused at the same time. the first Buckethead album i listended to was Bucketheadland, Vol. 2; it was a funk metal sort of crazy concept album. his guitar playing was some of the heaviest ive ever heard and his shredding was nothing like ive heard before. the next album of his i listened to was Population Override. this is the part where i got confused. is this the same guitarist? instead of heavy riffs and robotic solos he slowed it down and showed me a different side of guitar virtuosity. from there i searched for every Buckethead release i could find. each of his albums was completely different, ranging from ambient acoustic to heavy metal experimental. from then on it was all Buckethead all the time. through Buckethead i discovered the bass virtuouso Jonas Hellborg and from him i discovered jazz fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworthand Al Di Meola and jazz fusion bands like Weather Reporth and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

    im not even a quarter of the way done and im tired of typing right now. so i will continue this story another time.
