ontem à noiteah yes, I just got that one, haven't listened much, seems all-the-way improvised but as you stated it's hard to tell.

Sábado de manhãIt can be difficult to tell if Zorn's music is improvised or not. The simple answer is that a lot is, a lot isn't. I thought that Magic, Love and Mysticism was mostly improvised when I first listened, but that was before I realised that there is an arseload of thematic development which runs throughout and a really tightly controlled structure. On the other hand, I know that Locus Solus is almost 100% improvised, and a pretty big portion of his music is I guess what you'd call structured improvisation... some of his game pieces come to mind, which are basically where an improvising conductor conducts improvising players. Weird now I think about it. I'd personally like to know to which degree his Classic Guide to Strategy is improvised.

Sábado de manhãZorn is just as much a brilliant improviser as he is a genius composer. CygnusX-12: Definitely check out Spy vs. Spy. Also, his Masada and Electric Masada projects feature a lot of great jazz freakouts with a bit of Jewish folk influence.

Quinta à noiteCan anyone recommend what they consider to be the best of john zorn's free jazz freakout albums? Most of my albums by zorn he is more the composer than an actual choleric saxophonist. Thanks!

Segunda à noiteMy favorite Zorn is probably Six Litanies or Spy vs Spy, not sure. I love everything that I have though. And I totally agree with the guy that said that Chimeras is underrated, his Chamber music is fucking amazing.

Mês passadohttp://nowave.pair.com/no_wave/nycnowave_index.html "I remember these photos from some local paper [new york rocker]. This was an a street event held a few blocks south of Canal on Sixth Ave. This was memorable event for me as it was the one where John Zorn (still in his ZZ Top style beard and on his bicycle) watched me play the saxophone and gave me an extreme look of contempt (not undeserved in a way). He was a friend of someone in the group. He later came up to me and commented about my playing in a snotty way. The moment that still brings pride to me was when I retorted, "But I can't play the saxophone!" He immediately ended the conversation and went away." - william hohauser

Mês passadoI never was a huge fan of Absinthe but New Traditions is great, Six Litanies is amazing, Ganryu Island is nice but I rarely listen to it beginning to end. I think the most underrated is Chimeras (one of his chamber works) which I think is on par with Magic, Love and Mysticism. I also really liked Aporias, which doesn't get nearly enough attention. My favourite 'accessible' Zorn albums would have to be a bunch of his Filmworks (Rain Horse especially) Alhambra, Voodoo, News For Lulu, and pretty much all Masada String Trio & Bar Kokhba stuff. Wow long post.

Mês passadoI finally got El General and Alhambra Love Songs today!! As a fan of almost all Zorn has done, chamber music, Filmworks, Masada, Naked City, Bar Kokhba, filecard stuff, Hemophiliac, I can honestly say that both of these albums are absolutely fantastic, especially Alhambra, this is definitely some of his best stuff in a few years.

Mês passadoThe new album is a beautiful, quite tender - and jazzy, with a continuous groove attached to it - piece of work. And like the previous poster said, it actually feels quite unlike anything else he's done. Even if there - definitely - are similarities to some other albums, and moments.

No...this is (just got the cd) melodic tracks for a piano trio, dedicated to San Francisco area artists like Mike Patton and David Lynch and others... This sounds quite unlike any of his previous records, which is a good thing. The Rain Horse probably comes closest to this.

He releases too much material but still the portion of really crappy records is amazingly small. Most of it is topnotch. The Filmworks -series is not of consistent quality, but otherwise there`s very little to complain about.
