  • Miles Davis - On the Corner

    Jul 14 2009, 21h30 por Dyokhatta

This review was originally posted on Rate Your Music on 14 July, 2009: http://rateyourmusic.com/collection/Joci/rating16095639

On the Corner was released in 1972 as an attempt by Miles to get closer to the young black audience. This is an admirable intention, but so many people despise this record. "It is cacophonous/too hard to get/too hard to follow/not jazz," they say. Well, it certainly isn't jazz. It's simply music with directions by Miles Davis (as it is implied on the album covers).

I'm not a jazz expert, so my approach may not be that consistent. First of all, I really love this album. It took me quite a long time until it grew on me, but it finally happened. Although the album has four tracks (two in the 20 minute range and two short ones), it feels like a continuous groove over the same rhythm pattern.

Many people find the album tedious and monotonous, but if one listens to the album a bit more carefully (not as mere background music), they will find so many nuances and little parts that are really enjoyable and quite diverse. I think I managed to find these little parts and I can really feel the groove of the music. It's not about traditional song structures, it's just about the groove, the particular feel that the musicians had while recording and the feeling you get while you listen. If one pays attention, certain motifs reappear in the songs, such as the main "riff" of On the Corner (the song) and the main theme of Black Satin in Helen Butte/Mr. Freedom X.

The instrumentation is also very interesting. Miles often utilizes his new electric trumpet whose sound is fed through a wah-wah pedal, thus creating a tone similar to an electric guitar. At times he sounds like Hendrix, especially when he plays those "screaming" sounds. Another special addition is the sitar, although it is featured much less than the other instruments. It gives a sort of Eastern vibe to the music, which is quite unusual even for Miles. The line-up features some of Miles' best-known sidemen: among others, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette.

All in all, On the Corner often feels like an ambient album from the time when that term hasn't even been coined. But while typical ambient music is peaceful and helps one relax, this album grabs you and doesn't let you go, not even when it's over. The cover art is a perfect reflection of the music: the tumultuous vibe of the city (NYC) with its archetypal figures: the pimp, the prostitute (at least it seems to me like that), the down and out businessman and the hipsters dancing in the street.

I strongly recommend this album to anyone who would like to dig deep into Miles' music. However, the music might not reward you with its treasures right after the first listen.

It's About That Time (Miles Davis)

Note to people sitting next to me: You don't have to ruin the show for everyone around you by yelling out things like, "Wow!" and "Jesus Christ" and "What the fuck?" every single time there's a drum roll, or a sustained sax note, or an arpeggio performed, no matter how many Miller Lites you had before the show. It's nice that you're learning to appreciate jazz, but you don't have to try to prove it to the people around you by acting like you know what's going on on stage. Fucking idiots.

  • Song Of The Day - 20th April 2009: Snake Oil

    Abr 20 2009, 21h53 por GrantRS

The New Tony Williams Lifetime / Snake Oil / Believe It (1) / 1975

The drummer Tony Williams was talent spotted at age 17 and shortly thereafter joined Miles Davis's quintet, achieving a hefty helping of success and cult following for his adept skill as part of Davis' rhythm section. In '69 at the age of 23 though Williams surprised by leaving Davis' group to put together The Tony Williams Lifetime with guitarist John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young. Soon after their first album Emergency line up was joined by Cream's Jack Bruce on bass. However acclaimed the initial couple of records were in the jazz world though, the group couldn't maintain a steady line-up and gradually collapsed.

In 1975 The New Tony Williams Lifetime was formed with pianist Alan Pasqua, guitarist Allan Holdsworth and bassist Tony Newton. The New Lifetime lasted only two albums but the first 'Believe It' is a very highly acclaimed jazz fusion record.

This track kicks the album off with a very funky rocky bass line by Newton who also wrote the track.

  • Alexander Shulgin - Triptych, Part 2; ft. Gary Husband & Martin Taylor

    Abr 9 2009, 16h00 por musicdish

By Will J.B. Cohn, MusicDish e-Journal

Considering that people these days have an insatiable desire to be entertained at all times (part of the ADD generation that kids are growing up in), it's hard to believe that a minimalist album will hold a listeners attention for very long. With the absence of bass and drums, the music is extremely exposed, and there is risk of boring the listener to death. However, if performed by the right musicians (in this case Gary Husband and Martin Taylor) and composed by a talented composer like Alexander Shulgin, it can be a unique listening experience.

Alexander Shulgin's Part 2 of his new album Triptych is a minimalist album, with only a single musician on all tracks, except the last. All the songs are Shulgin's compositions, but Gary Husband (a well-known jazz multi-instrumentalist) is the one performing them on piano. Over the years Gary Husband has played for many of the jazz heavyweights out there, including Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Mike Stern, and Billy Cobham.

What makes the album most effective is the combination of Shulgin's strong compositions along with the creative interpretation of these compositions by Husband. For instance, while the second track, "TocarPrimadonna", contains the dark and ominous chord voicing of Shulgin, Husband is incorporating bluesy licks in the open space. On "Snowstormie", the chords are characteristic of Shulgin, but the jazz lines that are played over these chords are clearly Husband's ideas coming into play. Sometimes, different musical ideas clash, but in this case, the choices that Husband makes as the player and the choices that Shulgin makes as the composer complement each other, and mesh into a strong finished product.

The last track, entitled "Woman's Happiness Theme" features the guitar playing of Martin Taylor, a well-known British jazz guitarist, whose warm and clean sound adds a welcome and long-overdue new layer to the sound of the acoustic piano. Throughout the track, Taylor and Husband give each other room to breath. When Taylor is playing lead, Husband takes a back seat, providing the chords in the background and allowing Taylor to show-off his jazz chops.

The addition of Martin Taylor works so well that I find it surprising that he plays on only the last song. In fact, since Taylor is most well known as a solo performer, I wouldn't mind if one or two tracks were just him. Although the acoustic piano sound is easy on the ears, after several tracks in a row, the album appears to be a craving a different color, and this craving is satisfied only at the very end. Regardless, Shulgin's compositions are strong enough to get past the repetitive timbre, and along with Husband's creative interpretation of the compositions, the album is a success. And, depending on how ADD you are, it should hold your attention.
