My private confrontation with the last 50 years of music pt 1
Nov 21 2008, 0h36 por awd7
It's another evening when I'm so bored and, at the same time, too lazy to go anywhere where my friends suggest me to go. Of course, I spent my time waiting for another South Park episode, but before the cartoon I found something to do for these few hours. I looked back to the history of music and tried to choose my favourite album from every year since 1959. In 1986 and 1998 I had real problem with choosing between two albums, so I put on the list two albums ex aequo. So here's the list:
1959 - Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - my favourite jazz album, I got addicted to it when I was reading "Officer Factory" and the album was played in the background
1960 - Charles Mingus - Blues and Roots - amazing piece of powerful jazz!
1961 - John Coltrane - My Favorite Things - one of my favourite things in jazz.
1962 - Charles Mingus - Tijuana Moods - Mingus in a Mexican way, awesome!
1963 - Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - the third of my favourite jazz albums and in my opinion, best thing Mingus have ever made
1964 - Fiddler on the Roof (Original Broadway Cast)- ...and now something completely different. I have no favourite jazz album in 1964. I'm not into the 60s soul things. So I chose one of the coolest musicals ever made - who doesn't know the song "If I were a Rich Man"? oh, and at least it's far much better than all the early 60s the Beatles-crap and all those whiny folk pop or something artists. And I think that Stones began to rock for real on Aftermath. Two years later.
1965 - John Coltrane - A Love Supreme - the last jazz album on my list. And the second of my favourite ones. Coltrane's best.
1966 - Ennio Morricone - Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo - ok, I mentioned that Stones recorded Aftermath in 1966, I could put this album here as one of the first rock records I find interesting, but at last I chose a soundtrack to the amazing spaghetti western for a best album from 1966. Morricone is, along with Claudio Simonetti, my favourite soundtrack composer. This music is crazy, check out also other Sergio Leone's movies with his music. And early Argento's giallo classics!
1967 - The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico - this is what I call alternative rock. This album is absolutely crazy, it still sounds innovatively nowadays. It seems like a lot of modern indie (or alternative, label it as you want) bands try to imitate the sound of VU, but in fact most of them don't have even a half of VU's madness. Classic.
1968 - Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison - one of the best live albums in history. Throw away all your Nasty and other paper gangster band records, this one's really outlaw!
1969 - MC5 - Kick Out the Jams - the first PUNK ROCK album! harder and rougher than everything made before. My favourite 60s album.
1970 - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath and here we go with the 70s. I always prefered the self titled Black Sabbath debut album than the overrated paranoid, it has its unique, gloomy atmosphere, which was an inspiration for many important bands in the history of rock&roll.
1971 - Black Sabbath - Master of Reality and here we've got the Sabbs again. The stoner classic.
1972 - Hawkwind - Doremi Fasol Latido "it sounds like you've got very low battery in your discman", said my friend when I was listening to this album on cd. This couldn't have been recorded on Earth!
1973 - The Stooges - Raw Power - the angriest album before 80s, wild, obscene, vulgar - pure punk rock, but recorded 4 years before Never Mind the Bollocks!
1974 - Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla - just a good hard rock record, even not my favourite Priest's one, but I don't remember any better from 1974.
1975 - The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy - another proto punk classic, energetic rock&roll with hilarious lyrics. "First we check to see what you eat, then we bend down to smell your feet!"
1976 - Ramones - Ramones - I'm sure I don't need to explain why.
1977 - Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. 77, the year of the punk rock explosion. Lots of great records were released, but I chose the one that really rocks Like A Mother Fucker!
1978 - Rose Tattoo - Rose Tattoo Tough guy rock&roll, can't stand Angry Anderson got his ass kicked by Mel Gibson in Mad Max 3.
1979 - Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material - I'd be an ignorant if I don't mention any british record from the 77 punk revolt. This one I like the most.
1980 - Circle Jerks - Group Sex - this album had the biggest influence on my band. Punk rock masterpiece!
the rest soon -
“That Flawless Night Sky” or…

Music Suitable to be the Soundtrack to Stargazing and Imagined Space Travel
Quoted from my previous journal of this nature:
With all of these “greatest *insert genre here*” lists being posted all over Last.fm, I thought I might try something a little different; something that would get people thinking about broadening their horizons, while still allowing them to hear the same kind of music they enjoy listening to, in terms of mood and tone.
These are all very atmospheric albums that convey to their listeners the imagery of the void of space, whether the lyrics (if there are any) actually reflect that imagery or not. These albums will instill a sense of darkness as well as enlightenment and you’ll find yourself answering the beckon call of those glimmering stars and planets…
On a late-night stroll, you come upon a soft, grassy hill. You decide to stop for a while and lie at the top of it, face up, arms comfortably placed behind your head. Before you is a perfectly clear night sky. There are no obscuring clouds or city lights, no bothersome company to distract you… You romantically feel there is nothing standing between you and the mystical beauty of the stars.
You visualize yourself piloting a shuttle through space with no real destination, celestial bodies passing you by. There is a strange assortment of noises coming from the anachronistic technological machinery all throughout the space vessel: harsh metallic sounds and banging noises, gears grinding, liquids bubbling, steam escaping, monotonous and repetitive beeps, bizarre transmissions coming from your radio.
You are trapped in solitude with no clue how to get home, but this is how you wanted it. Years spent on end aimlessly floating through the void, you realize you are not only exploring space, but yourself. Introspection dominates your endless waking hours and you’re left pondering the self for all eternity.
You rise to your feet just to get a closer look at that flawless night sky…

A Trip To New York
Nov 19 2008, 12h57 por mtbcast
Following Keith Jarrett's "Köln Concert" sermon, you leave the church. It's a beautiful sunday morning, it's fall, cold and misty. Yet sunny. "Coffee first", you say, and enter the next deli.
The guy at the door behind the warm-held curtain is Miles. He's the Bouncer. He checks you in with
Blues By Five, a cold reception, followed by a warm welcome: "Welcome to New York" says Billie Holiday dressed as a waitress waiting impatiently to take your order, "it's so nice here in autumn. Autumn in New York!"
After you eat, you take off. Busy streets, canyons of steel. Dexter Gordon, the bike-messenger, is your man. You and Dexter fly through
Broadway. What an energy. After a while, you think it's time to cool down.
You go to a small bar and buy a drink. Stan Getz comes in and tells you a long, long story. It's all
Misty and sad, but with a nice happy end.
We really don't wanna sleep midday in bar, do we?
You leave the place and take a cab. Monk is the New York cab driver,
Blues Five Spot his taxi. First you think, this guy is an idiot, he can drive nowhere. And then you start gliding through Manhattan's tiny streets, not getting stuck in any traffic. That creep can roll, man.
Monk knows every single corner, how tiny, how concealed, no matter. You're ashamed of yourself, of your thoughts. This guy is fucking genius!
Enjoying the ride, you open the window. It's Harlem's Manhattan. Stories. Streets. Steam. People walking, crossing the streets, cars. It's busy. Jarrett's
From The Body kicks in. All the different flavors, the variety, the different restaurants, kitchens, languages, plates, dishes and yes, espresso, the smell of coffee. It's a world of its own!
Enter coffee shop. You lay yourself on a comfy couch and stare the ceiling. Warm drink. It's Herbie Mann whistling into your ear. You're almost asleep, but the wake up call comes in.
Here he is, your butler James with the white-gold 1930's phone in his hand, "It's Mr John Coltrane again, sir, uhmm, I think it is the issue with
The Inch Worm. He says, you'd know. And, oh: "Sir, he's insisting." He makes a phone sign with his hand, to point out that you have to take this call, as if you would ever want to make a single gesture, not to think of an action, in against taking Mr Coltrane's call. Where in earth could that be?
Irritated, shaking your head, you then gladly answer the call. Once again with deep pleasure. How nice it was to hear his voice. "Yes, yes, ta dii, tara daa, tara di da.. yes" I think you know all the words.
It's late. You take Oscar's
Night Train to the city. The every-now-and-then stopping and slowly-slowly rolling train.
You count the seconds.. The Night starts..

Jazzεψα!
Nov 18 2008, 23h23 por kyanoun
πχ
John Coltrane Miles Davis Paul Desmond
Θέλω δουλειά όμως ακόμα για να έχω άποψη σχετικά με τη jazz και βασικά χαίρομαι που έχω τόσο υλικό να "μελετήσω".
Περιμένω τις προτάσεις σας ;)
