His voice is soulful and unique, his lyrics personal and captivating, but Joey Ryan might also be the smartest singer-songwriter on the scene. Unlike many in his field, just a few years ago Joey was on his way to becoming a neuroscientist. Fascinated with the workings of the brain, he was a straight-A student at the University of California Berkley, about to begin a neuroscience Ph.D. program. During college, though, Joey had begun playing music with his friends and they had formed a band, playing at parties and local bars. Just before graduation, a friend with a recording studio approached Joey and said, “Why don’t you become a musician instead of a neuroscientist?” Regarding that fateful proposal Joey recalls, “At first I thought he was joking, but the idea sunk in and I pictured myself at 30, never having admitted to myself that my dream was to be a musician, and I just couldn’t live with that”.
A year and a half later, he has become well known up and down the West Coast, has had tracks placed in TV and film and all without the help of a manager or agent. Joey has had two tracks – Light On and No One Else Like You – in the indie feature film Bella (Winner 2006 Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award). Tracks Loving You and As It Must Be were featured on the hit TV show One Tree Hill in 2008 and Loving You reached the Top 20 in the iTunes Folk Charts in the US and Canada, as well as number 10 in France.
