  • Song Of The Day - 30th May 2009: Frail Grasp on the Big Picture

    Mai 30 2009, 22h28 por GrantRS

Eagles / Frail Grasp On The Big Picture / Long Road Out Of Eden (15) / 2007

Having not done too many journals over the last fortnight, I've got a backlog of recent and new acquisitions I'm eager to talk about. One such acquisition is the Eagles' comeback album from late 2007, which I've only just gotten around to buying. Perhaps a band that sit oddly among my collection (particularly as I have at times gone on record as claiming to hate country music and there's a fair bit of country in the Eagles' sound), I nevertheless loved the album on first listen. I became more critical of it on further listens, however though there's still a good number of tracks on there that I still enjoy very much. The trio of 7+ minute tracks are standouts for me each for different reasons and each immediately different from each other (one of my favourite things about Eagles songs in general), of those three perhaps special mention is merited for Joe Walsh's sole writing credit of the album on Last Good Time In Town which has his stamp all over it and, despite some mildly creepy whispers, is a great track. The two obvious singles choices near the beginning of the first disc are great also as typical Eagles radio friendly tracks. Fast Company has me scratching my head, I can't decide whether I like it or hate it, it's certainly very different from the expected Eagles sound with its predominant falsetto type vocals and funky vibe.

Frail Grasp on the Big Picture though is my current favourite track on the album. The chorus is catchy though not the best on the album, it's the verse lyrics that win my favour. Some of my favourite lines are quoted below:

Even if one of 'em was to read a newspaper, cover to cover
    That ain't what's going on

    ...

"Who left the cap of the freakin' toothpaste?"
"Whose turn to take the garbage out?"

    ...

And we pray to our Lord, who we know is American

    ...

He supports us in war; He presides over football games

I don't mean to make this political but I love those lines. You've gotta admit Henley and Frey have a point.

So anyway, that's a glimpse into why I enjoy the music of Eagles. I am completely aware their appeal is not exactly the same as the majority of my listening but that's part of the appeal (although since I guess I'm talking about guitar solos there, I don't need to remind anyone of their biggest anthem?)

  • Song Of The Day - 25 Mar 2009: Rosewood Bitters

    Mar 29 2009, 1h31 por sablespecter

    Michael Stanley / TocarRosewood Bitters / Michael Stanley (1) / ? 1972

I take a short break from posting the MUS1030 Music Journals to give a shout out to Michael Stanley, who turned 61 on Wednesday. Happy Birthday to the hometown hero!

For his birthday last year, I chose a selection from Silk, the group he was with before he struck out on his own. This selection comes from the next album he appeared on, which was his first solo album. It was one of only nine released by the obscure, short-lived, corporate-funded, weed-fuelled Tumbleweed label. For a long time this was a very difficult album to obtain, but you can easily get it on CD via his website now.

Tumbleweed's founders were in L.A. when they decided to form a new label in 1970, but started up in Denver in an effort to find a new scene apart from the stale late-60s hippie scene of southern California, and also because they were terrified of the over-hyped "Big One" earthquake mania that gripped the region in those days. The oil money of corporate Gulf+Western led the label to craft lavish productions of small numbers of recordings that had rather little promotion; more focused on the art rather than the business. The money also allowed Tumbleweed to be one big lavish stoned party house!

Though Michael is from Cleveland, label co-founder and longtime friend (and future Eagles producer) Bill Szymczyk brought him out to Denver to record this in the lavish Tumbleweed mansion with session help from Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, and Rick Derringer.

"Rosewood Bitters" is a song that's a permanent entry in the Michael Stanley canon, even through the Michael Stanley Band years. It's a contemporary westcoast-influenced melodic bit of 70s AOR with good slide guitar from Joe Walsh. Joe even recorded his own version of the song for The Confessor in the mid-80s.

Here's my [pretty modest] bootleg collection, along with a rating for sound quality:
If anyone wants to trade or anything, just ask.

A+ : Official release quality/radio broadcast, near flawless
A : Almost flawless sound quality, but perhaps slightly faded
B : Very good sound quality, but perhaps a little quiet or dulled.
C : Good sound quality, but maybe noticably faded or patchy
D : Noticably flawed sound quality, but still very much listenable
E : Reasonably poor sound quality, just about listenable
F : Terrible sound quality, barely worth listening to, and for completists only

Basically, anything from D (inclusive) upwards is good.

  • Songs Of The Day - 09-10 Dec 2008: On The Hunt / Turn To Stone

    Jan 22 2009, 4h57 por sablespecter

    Dixie Witch / TocarOn the Hunt / Sucking The 70's (I-3) / Jan 2002

Fireball Ministry / Turn to Stone / Sucking the 70's: Back in the Saddle Again (II-7) / Nov 2006

These two selections are from two of the three multi-artist compilations of stoner rock that I picked up in 2008. The third being And Back To Earth Again. All three are among the best of all of the multi-artist comps that I own.

These two 2-disc collections feature stoner rock/southern metal covers of classic Seventies cuts. If you know stoner rock, you know the holy hesher days of the 70s are the ultimate era of inspiration to them, along with hot rods and hot chicks. (Just look at the cover art...you can judge these discs by the cover...)

Some of these bands are no longer around, and some of them are well-known, but all of them are good. Nearly every single track on these four discs is worth owning. They're not just simple rote regurgitation of the original songs, and a few of them have been "reinterpreted" as opposed to copied.

Here are my favorites from these albums. Unless noted (*), I believe all of these bands are active with albums of their own:

    From Sucking the 70's:
Dec 9th SotD: *Dixie Witch's cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best track from Nuthin' Fancy.
(TocarOn The Hunt narrowly edges out "Saturday Night Special"...perhaps because "On the Hunt" is mercifully never played on mainstream radio and remains a hidden gem. SNS is still one of my favorites, though, since neither have been ridden as much as "Free Bird" or "Sweet Home Alabama")

    Clutch: Cross-Eyed Mary
I've never been much of a Jethro Tull fan, but do love Clutch. I've always liked Iron Maiden's Cross-Eyed Mary, but theirs isn't as faithful to the original as Clutch's version. Clutch make me want to have the original.

    Backdraft: TocarChild of Babylon
On the other hand, I've never heard of these Southern-tinged Swedish longhairs before, but will take any cover of this Whitesnake track. Listening to these guys provides no clue whatsoever that they're from Sweden.

    Roadsaw: TocarVehicle
Roadsaw is from Boston and have a bunch of albums but I don't have any of them. IMHO this is easily the best track on disc 2: a killer version of the intensely-great original hit from The Ides of March. I love the original, but replacing the horns with guitars is killer, too.

    *Alabama Thunderpussy: TocarHymn 43
I'm glad they didn't limit the choice of tracks to "one per original artist" because this is yet another great Jethro Tull selection from the sadly now-defunct Virginia stars of southern metal. Get some more AT if you don't have any.

    *Spirit Caravan: TocarWicked World
Wino can do no wrong in my book, and absolutely no surprise that this defunct project (one of several) contributes a Black Sabbath cut. You can tell from the cymbals alone right at the start which song this is.

From Back in the Saddle Again:
Dec 10th SotD: Fireball Ministry's cover of my favorite Barnstorm/Joe Walsh track. Supposedly another FM album is in the works. It's about time they got it out already.

*Alabama Thunderpussy: Man on the Silver Mountain
If you like covers and like the original Rainbow hit, get this. Nobody's guitar work on this will compare with Ritchie's, but you won't be disappointed.

    Brad Davis: Outlaw Man
Are you as big a fan of Fu Manchu as I am? Especially those fat, fuzzy bass lines? Then you'll like Davis' contribution: plenty of groovy bass and good vocals, too, on this version of my favorite track from Eagles' Desperado. Even features the "ooo-ooo" backing vocals!

    Orange Goblin: New Rose
I have no music by The Damned in my collection, but this version by these UK stoner/doom metal titans is a fun ride that makes me wonder what else I've been missing by the London punk legends. I believe Orange Goblin have a new album due this year, too.

    Mos Generator: Garden Road
This only further drives my craving for Rush's original! But while we await an official release (HIGHLY improbable), and especially if you don't have it on bootleg, you can fill the gap with this version from these Seattle-area heroes. There is a Cleveland ('natch!) bootleg out there called The Fifth Order of Angels, which was recorded from the WMMS broadcast of a show at the old Agora Ballroom (listed here as 1974-08-26: The Fifth Order of Angels: Cleveland, OH, USA) and has this song on it, but the track isn't available on Last. You can use Media Converter to rip the audio from the youtube version, though the audio won't be as good as we Rush geeks demand:

  • Song Of The Day - 15 Oct 2008: Hotel California (AotY 1976)

    Out 22 2008, 10h02 por sablespecter

    Eagles / TocarHotel California / Hotel California (1) / Dec 1976

sablespecter's Album of the Year for 1976 (RDF: 88.9%)

I really should have saved this selection from the album for a time when I could give it a more thorough treatment, but how could I not pick the title track as the SotD when I announce the album as the AotY? It's a definitive classic. As much as I'd love to think Iron Maiden pioneered the triple-guitar attack, Eagles are likely the first to have achieved major success with it, especially with this album with the addition of Joe Walsh after the departure of Bernie Leadon.

    Is it 6 O'Clock yet?

    --------
Rounding out the Top Five of 1976 (in order of descending RDF):

Scorpions: Virgin Killer (88.9% RDF): An RDF tie with the AotY, but not a favorite for as long.

Rush: 2112 (83.3% RDF): The third of my personal Top 3 Rush albums, along with Caress of Steel and the AotY 1974. The five red dot tracks cover 91% of the album.

Rainbow: Rising (83.3% RDF): My favorite Rainbow album.

Thin Lizzy: Jailbreak (77.7% RDF): A good year for them with two-in-one, which had become a very rare thing for bands to do by this time.

Honorable Mentions (in alphabetical order by band/artist name):
The Alan Parsons Project: Tales of Mystery and Imagination
    Black Sabbath: Technical Ecstasy
Blue Öyster Cult: Agents of Fortune

  • This week in history: Take 3

    Set 1 2008, 13h42 por Eclectic-G

Further to my journal entries of September 24, 2007 and January 26, 2008, the August 30 edition of Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper, once again under the title "This week in history", ran a copy of the CHUM Radio Top-10 charts for Saturday, September 2, 1978: 30 years ago.

I immediately recognised nine of the ten songs on the list only one stumped me. (As they say, nine out of ten isn't bad.) Have a look at the list and see how many you recognise.

    Here is the list:

1 Three Times a Lady (The Commodores)
2 TocarLove Will Find a Way (Pablo Cruise)
    3 Grease (Frankie Valli)
4 TocarYou Needed Me (Anne Murray)
5 TocarBreak It To Them Gently (Burton Cummings)
6 Live's Been Good (Joe Walsh)
7 Two out of Three Ain't Bad (Meatloaf)
    8 TocarHot Blooded (Foreigner)
9 An Everlasting Love (Andy Gibb)
10 TocarHopelessly Devoted To You (Olivia Newton-John)

    Notes
The only song I didn't recognise? "An Everlasting Love" by Andy Gibb. (A quick look on the internet tracked it down, though.)

"Three Times a Lady" spent a total of five weeks at number 1. This week's CHUM chart is nicely punctuated by "Grease" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from the soundtrack of that epic motion picture Grease.
