Wed 25 Nov – Joe Bonamassa
Joe Bonamassa bewees deze week nog maar eens dat hij op dit moment vrij eenzaam aan de top staat als het op gitaar en blues aankomt. Het was 1h45min lang genieten, dikwijls met openvallende mond. Zijn veelzijdigheid is wat mij betreft zijn grootste troef, zonder zijn eigen stijl uit het oog te verliezen, waagt hij zich met succes aan schitterende blues-ballads (Sloe Gin), akoestisch stuntwerk (Woke Up Dreaming) en zelfs het ruigere blues-rock werk (Just Got Paid-Dazed and Confused). Dat Joe daarnaast ook nog behoorlijk productief is met 9 releases of negen jaar en zowat non-stop touring, maakt het er alleen maar meer bewonderenswaardig op. Hopelijk houdt hij dit niveau nog lang aan!

Wat me aan Joe wel opgevallen is, is zijn gegroeide zelfvertrouwen op het podium t.o.v. anderhalf jaar terug in de Handelsbeurs in Gent. Vroeger vond ik het echt fantastisch om de schuchtere, verlegen persoon bijna in een hoekje van het podium weg te zien kruipen en tegelijkertijd verschroeiend uit te halen op zijn gitaar. Nu blijkt hij toch meer in de rol van rockster geduwd te zijn, wat waarschijnlijk beter verkoopt, maar niet meer het leuke contrast tussen ogen en oren oplevert.

Wat mij betreft een sterk uitgebalanceerde set, met hoogtepunten zowel in het begin, midden als einde. Een erg geslaagd concert dus, dat gerust nog een uur langer had mogen duren!


Jammer genoeg dacht achteraan links in de zaal niet iedereen daar zo over. Verschillende mensen (zowel links, rechts als achter mij) vonden het blijkbaar hoognodig om zichzelf veel interessanter te achten dan de artiest en iedereen die het horen wilde (en ook al wie niet wilde) hun levensverhaal te vertellen. 75% van de tijd staan lullen en toch geld betalen om Joe bezig te zien, dat gaat er bij mij echt niet in... Vormde wat mij betreft toch een serieuze domper op het concert, zeker bij de zachtere nummers... Een tip voor die mensen: Joe bracht enkele maanden terug een schitterende live-dvd uit, lekker in de zetel te bekijken en zo kan je tegelijkertijd jezelf in de spiegel bewonderen!

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40 years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

Thu 13 Aug – Joe BonamassaTwenty-eight years ago Joe Bonamassa opened at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom for B.B. King at the age of 13, on August 13, 2009 he headlined a near sold-out 1,800 capacity crowd. This was my first real Blues Rock concert and the seats at the venue were not exactly as the purchasing showed (not to mention the interruptions and blocked views the tight seating had; small spot on a great performance), but the angle was still great to see all the action from the side, not to mention Mr. Bonamassa knows how to work the stage in perfect fashion. Kicking off the gig with a hard and heavy “The Ballad of John Henry” and playing through slower jam “Sloe Gin” this gig showcased everything that makes the Blues, particularly Bonamassa’s style, so appealing. The acoustic song “Woke Up Dreaming” brought new appreciation from me for the acoustic guitar as I was sure the strings were going to snap and the wood body would catch fire with the amazing fretwork performed on it. This show was a spectacular experience in the Blues that any fan should check out, even if they are just into good guitar work. That is not to say the backing band is not able to hold their chops as Rick Melick on keyboards and Bogie Bowles both laid down some great solos (Bowles’ solo is probably the best drum solo, albeit short, I’ve ever seen alongside the one I saw at Zappa Plays Zappa). Bass player Carmine Rojas set down a perfect accompanying rhythm to the drums that left for a great groovability that had me in rare dancing form. Bonamassa resembles the King, Elvis Presley, and certainly knows how to work his music and crowd on his way to becoming to King of the Blues…if he is not already there.
