  • Pink Martini at the Roundhouse

    Mai 21 2007, 7h45 por toptoga

Sun 20 May – Pink Martini

Well, Roundhouse is now my favourite venue in London. Perfectly suited to the intimate style of Pink Martini, with singer China Forbes in terrific voice on the evening.

As they, only somewhat apologetically, said, most of the material on the night came from the new third album "Hey Eugene". But they closed out with a quick tour-de-force through their greatest hits from the first and second albums.

There was an unexpected guest appearance from the 81-year old Jimmy Scott, who featured on the old spiritual Motherless Child. His idiosyncratic vocals were well-balanced by the effortless charm of China Forbes.

The sound balance was exquisite, bringing their musical craftsmanship much more alive than the earlier concert this year at the Hammersmith Apollo. The horn section in particular excelled, driving the songs along with a bravura performance.

    Gorgeous indeed.

  • Traveling to different worlds (mp3 share)

    Set 10 2006, 23h16 por bboysgirl

"Cinema is such a beautiful language. Cinema is the thing that deals with things beyond words, and it's so beautiful. So to go with cinema is like going with music, your intellect travels along with it, it's so fantastic. Go in and have an experience in a different world."
    --David Lynch

Film director David Lynch was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival. Lynch is the genius behind the films Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive. His new film, Inland Empire, debuted at the Venice Film Festival and has confounded reviewers who don't understand his different worlds.

Love or hate Lynch's films (I choose love), one must acknowledge his superior choice and use of music in them. Through music, which he sometimes composes himself, Lynch creates lush, sinister, and otherworldly settings.

In anticipation of the general release of Lynch's Inland Empire, I am sharing a number of memorable songs from the soundtracks of his films. I uploaded mp3s of the individual songs to yousendit.com, so you can download only what interests you. If you want to go one step further, watch the video clips from the films at Youtube.com that I linked.

  • process in background

    Ago 6 2006, 21h54 por MHotel

    this is a background process.

compiled over a few months (beginning back when it really was pollination time), this was more of a distraction than a concentrated effort. what happened was a collision between an influx of soul into my collection and a desire to keep the product subdued but playful. i don't know if i really accomplished that, but i did succeed in distracting myself from actual productive work for a while. the resulting mishmash of jazz, soul, hip-hop, rawk and disco (!!!) isn't entirely cohesive, but is a nice backdrop to a tall glass of whiskey, so i consider it a success.

also Will Oldham makes me cry. thanks country music.

  • Antony and the Johnsons Concert at Carnegie Hall

    Out 17 2005, 14h59 por geewee

Last two weeks we have been visiting New York City, meeting up with a friend, who has been living there for almost 2 years now.

On Thursday the 13th we went to the Antony and the Johnsons concert at Carnegie Hall. A very moving performance, not only by Antony and his band, but also by the intermezzo singer Jimmy Scott, whose music I didn't know, until now. Jimmy Scott is an 80 year old jazz singer, specialised in performing ballads, really slow. His renditions of TocarSometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child and Sorry seems to be the hardest word brought a number of people in the audience to tears. The encore brought Lou Reed to the stage, a known admirer of Antony's work. Lou played the guitar for Candy says, while Antony sang, showing us a happy child.

Before I forget: we bumped into Rufus Wainwright at the lobby of Carnegie Hall. We saw him again a few days later in the Shelter club. I'm looking forward to see him perform in the Paradiso club in Amsterdam, sometime in the next few weeks. Too bad Antony didn't sing a song together (What can I do) with Rufus.
