Formado no começo dos anos 90, lança seu debut cd, auto-intitulado, via gravadora independente Wooden Blue Records. A repercussão é mínima, principalmente pela sonoridade ainda não muito bem definida, um hibrido entre o hardcore, o emo e o indie rock. Já, em 1996 o grupo encontra seu direcionamento musical e lança o fantástico “Static Prevails”, via Capitol Records. O então emergente estilo “emo” fica claro na sonoridade deste disco, acompanhado sempre pelo indie rock extremamente pop. Infelizmente a Capitol não dava a mínima para os meninos e ignorava qualquer tipo de possível promoção da banda, mesmo assim, o JEW conseguiu grande notoriedade na cena indie, e assim sendo, lançou dois discos de forma independente: “Singles” - compilação de todos os singles do ínicio da carreira - e um split EP com o grupo pop-rock Jebediah, ambos lançados pelo selo independente Big Wheel Creation. Em fevereiro de 1999 é lançado “Clarity”, um disco às vezes difícil de se assimilar, principalmente pela complexidade musical que o grupo atingiu, chegando até a compor músicas de 16 minutos de duração. Novamente a Capitol não dá o mínimo crédito e o disco não emplaca no mainstream, porém no underground o JEW caminha para os mais altos patamares que uma banda pode chegar. Segundo Jim Adkins, vocalista, a reunião para quebra de contrato com a Capitol se resumiu no seguinte diálogo: - Nós poderiamos sair gravadora?, resposta: - Quem são vocês? Assim sendo, o Jimmy Eat World larga a Capitol Records e é contratado pela Dreamworks, gravadora de propriedade do cineasta Steven Spielberg e casa de bandas como Papa Roach e AFI.

yea, "Clarity" and "Futures" are my 2 two favorites, however both "Bleed American" and " Chase This Light" are solid...."Static Prevails" has always been tooo different for me to get into it completely, like I don't hate it I just prefer the other 4 albums to it

Personally, the songs on Futures ring deepest with me. I guess I look for a certain delivery, and songs like 'Work' and 'Kill' just nail it. Clarity and Chase This Light have some great examples as well, with Bleed American probably having the least.

Chase this Light wasn't bad because it was pop, it was bad because it was mediocre pop. Jimmy Eat World can write amazing pop (Bleed American showed that), but Chase This Light wasn't it.

Clarity and Static Prevails are the best, but I still love all their albums anyway. Chase this light may get very pop in places, but pop doesn't mean bad (unless you're a metal of emo elitest).
