P.S.: The last notes never fail to give me chills!

This was always one of my favorite Jewel songs and i always interpreted the "Amen" and "Hallelujah" as sarcastic and having not listened to Jewel for a couple of years and during that time realizing not only how much religion doesn't make sense to me but how appaling it is, I hear it that way now more than ever. "Such an injustice, as children we are told that from god we fell" strikes me as a statement of how parents brainwash their kids into a specific religion rather than think for themselves. This song is full of child references and injustices in the world, "A-f&^%ing-men" to all that. It's too deep and dark to be a prayer IMO, and I searched and Jewel said she has never found comfort in organized religion.

She was an acquired taste for me... didn't like her first hit, but she really is an excellent singer and songwriter. Her high notes at the end are just lovely.

I knew this song before, but only yesterday I really heard it and fell in love.

I read that she wrote this song when Kurt Cobain killed himself— if you remember, there were diehard fans that were killing themselves as well, thus all the references in the song to "heroes" and "where are my angels?". It's about how people look for idols and can't find them; and when they do, their idols fall from grace. Kurt was an idol to a lot of people.

It's mysterious and poetic. I don't understand it completely either, but admire the vocals and phrasing. Beautiful!!!
