  • A critique on Christian Music - OR - seriously guys, stop writing crappy MOR stuff.

    Dez 24 2007, 3h10 por Caspiannnnn

As a music fan, and as a reluctant but nonetheless devout christian, one thing that annoys me intensely is the sheer crappiness of the christian music scene. For a religion that, among other things, holds values like Integrity, Honesty, and possesses a sort of loony be-not-of-this-world outlook, (or it's meant to, anyway) it's hard to find a band within this particular niche of music that isn't churning out the most bland, pointless, designed-to-sell-records-to-soccer-mums music there is.

Whether it's the terrible pop rock of Newsboys, the awful shopping mall music of Sixpence None the Richer, or the almost blasphemous attempt at 'RAWK' that's Third Day or Audio Adrenaline, Christian music is completely devoid of anything resembling integrity, excitement, and is possibly blander then Matchbox 20, which is quite an impressive feat in itself. And don't get me started on those indie bands who have some sort of christian outlook. Chances are Sufjan Stevens and Pedro the Lion would sound exactly the same as those other mentioned bands if they had better production. Hell, even Jars of Clay, the one good christian band, finally gave in to the blandness with their last two albums.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what the point of this journal is. But current Christian music sucks, and I'm not entirely sure why. There are of course dudes who will go "PERHAPS ITS BECAUSE THE RELIGION SUCKS LOL" but then that wouldn't account for all of the amazing christian music of old made by Bach, Palestrina and even Johnny Cash. Perhaps it's just the more modern variety of it? I'm not entirely sure, but for some reason modern Christian Music seems to be more about idolising Matchbox 20 and/or Coldplay then anything else. It's sad, but to me bands like Neurosis, Nadja, Jesu and The Angelic Process do a far, far better job of representing the divine nature of god then anything current christian bands do. It's also a shame that the current 'Anti Christian Music Scene' (by that I basically mean black metal, I'm not familiar with anything else with this kind of ideology) is far, far more creative, far more interesting and just much better then anything the current christian scene is putting out.

So, to conclude, there are a few things I'd like to say.

To current Christians: Stop being so bland. Generally, those crazy dudes handing out pamphlets on the street are a lot closer to, I guess, the 'real christianity' then you. This religion was never meant to be user friendly.

To those folks in Black Metal bands: Any chance some of you guys could convert sometime? We need some interesting music over here as well, and some of you guys seem pretty talented.

To current christian bands: Stop making music until you actually find some goood motivation to make music. No, money is NOT a good motivation. Start living in the woods and release heaps of Psych Folk records or something, I dunno, just stop with the crappy soccer mum music already.

To Jars of Clay: What the hell, guys? What on earth possessed you to write Good Monsters and make a Christmas Album? Start writing really slow country tunes again already.

To dudes who may know more about christian music then me: Feel free to recommend me christian music that isn't completely devoid of integrity, and is actually somewhat interesting. THAT WOULD BE SWEET.

  • It's so hard without music..

    Jun 22 2007, 11h29 por spikemobile

since my mp3-player died right before i got on the train to go to kyrgyzstan, i been so desperate without being able to listen to music. those of you who listen to it like 24/7 (if possible), understand exactly what i'm talking about.

thankfully i took some of my mp3 cds and was able to borrow an mp3-cd-player. and that kind of soothed my "pain." i also am able to listen to some tunes on the comp while writing letters and whatnot. what did i listen? hmm, i did play Living Sacrifice, Nodes of Ranvier, U2, PAX217 (am listening to their Check Your Pulse EP right now), Delirious?, Jennifer Knapp, Dead Poetic, Strongarm... and i really got hung on Mae's Destination: Beautiful. God seems to have found a special way to relate to me thru music.

but i'm planning to survive nonetheless.. if nothing else, i'm just listening to the sounds of nature and the sounds of the people that surround me. you should try it, too. we miss a whole lot by not giving it a listen.

  • Similar Artist Game

    Mai 27 2007, 5h31 por Enrique67

Thanks to macychick for this idea. First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • Not bad eh?

    Mai 13 2007, 21h28 por joymark

Just joined last.fm today, mainly just so I could test out this script. 71% eclectic for less than two hour of listening, just letting my iTunes randomly choose songs. Not too shabby for such a short time I'd say.

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

    My eclectic score is currently

    71/100

  • Thoughts and Analysis Related to "Mainstream" statistics.

    Abr 18 2006, 16h21 por dp316

There is currently a "meme" going around this site about how "mainstream" you are. Personally, I don't judge people's tastes based on how indie or mainstream they are. For example, The Beatles make great music in spite of being extremely well-known. Some bands work well with popular styles, some don't. I don't fault anyone for their accessibility or lack thereof.

I do think, though, that these statistics are a nice judge of how well the general population of last.fm users agrees with the tastes of any one of us. Now, an average score means little, because it can be radically inflated or deflated by extreme examples. I think median statistics are more interesting here, and percentages of the overall are also interesting.

According to http://www.last.fm/user/soulphox/journal/2006/04/17/117796/ , the average playcount (or is that reach? I'm not studying this that closely...) of last.fm's top 10 artists is 231,930. From here, we can compare numbers to get percentages, which are handy ways of comparing fanbases. So if fractions and percentages are your thing, calculate those instead.

I think median statistics are also really telling. My top three artists (The Beatles, Radiohead, and U2, if you're wondering) are all extremely popular, and thus throw off my average score. Radiohead, in particular, is so popular that their fan base on last.fm has a few orders of magnitude on my number 8 artist, Fold Zandura. You wouldn't guess that I had bands with less than 300 listeners in my top 10 based on my average "score" of 93,718. So what's the median of this set of numbers, that I think says so much more than the average of this set of numbers? The median is just 19,085 (for those asking, you average the middle two numbers to calculate the median in even-numbered sets, so that number is the average of Jars of Clay's 10,556 listeners and Sixpence None the Richer's 27,614 listeners). I think that the median amount of listeners says more about my top ten than the average does. The range of the set also says quite a bit, as it shows that the popularity of my top ten artists ranges from 281 (Fold Zandura) to 283,760 (Radiohead).

For those curious, the rest of this entry is my raw data. For those up for some math-nerd talk about the types of statistics we can generate from last.fm to see what we can see, let's discuss that in the comments. I'm not a big stats person, so I should probably not try to go into this much further than I already have.

    Rank Artist Number of Listeners
    2 Radiohead 283,760
    1 The Beatles 267,184
    3 U2 217,169
    10 The Arcade Fire 125,227
5 Sixpence None the Richer 27,614
    7 Jars of Clay 10,556
    4 Over the Rhine 3,088
    9 Jennifer Knapp 1,651
    6 The Violet Burning 650
    8 Fold Zandura 281

    Total 937,180
    Average: 93,718
Median (average of middle two values): 19085
...and apologies in advance of my little table of raw data from notepad looks like crap.
