  • Dandelion Radio - July 2008 shows

    Jun 23 2008, 20h39 por DandelionRadio

As we play out the last few days of the June shows (get in quick to catch them if you missed any of the 22 hours) ... here is what you can expect in July.

    Andrew Morrison:
After getting a lot of airtime from extra shows during the last few months, Andy's back to just one two-hour show in July - but it's a rare find packed with gems.
There an exclusive five track session from Ramp, the third specially-recorded live track from Eliza Newman's recent tour in the UK, as well as more tracks from wonderful unsigned acts lanterns on the lake and Alex Canasta.
You'll also hear the usual guest spots, 'Scott's Funky Five Minutes' and 'Teresa's Tasty Tips'.

    Dubster:
It's Radiodubster's annual garage sale again.
Yes, time to get down to the garage for an hour or 3 and have a good ransack through our unfeasibly large collection of vinyl and CDs, but take heed of the sign on the door "NO MUSIC SNOBS ALLOWED!"
So leave your inhibitions at the door and prepare for a 3 hour browse back in time through indie, prog, psychedelic, techno, heavy metal, TV detective programme theme tunes (!) and too many other genres to mention.
Come on down, with prices like these we're virtually giving it away!...
...what's that love? Nick Kershaw 12" picture disc? Thats 50 quid......hey that's a rare Jap import y'know ... yeah I know the Woolies sticker says £3.99, but ....

    Mark Cunliffe:
Crumbs, we’ve had more than half the year of new music and it’s gone quicker than Ben Johnson on his way to the pharmacy. There’s no let up here though.
We have a Bong-Ra chum going by the name of Bong Selecta making like Mowgli in Epping Forest, kinda jungle. We’ve got a bit of old skool hip hop by Klashnekoff being updated by some Beezwax????! More re-working action, this time from Sinden on Sheffield dancehall king Toddla T.
There’s something brand new from Lianne Hall and don’t tell your Gran but there’s SUCH LANGUAGE from DJ Donna Summer. Son Of Dave goes uber commercial or our ass which ticks a box here. Badeshi gives us some D&B with an Asian flavour that even Alberto Frog would be asking for! the dust collectors pitch in with some very welcome new material.
There’s SUKH KNIGHT stepping in some dub…..I hope he gets it off his Loefah before he walks on his carpet. Finally, I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE THE DAY, I’ve got some BASSLINE in the show…..OH MY GOD!!

    Pete Jackson:
This month, we're gonna party like its 1989, as a whole bunch of vintage acts, like The Fall, The Wedding Present, Mudhoney and Meat Beat Manifesto release brand new material for the modern age.
We've also got a round-the-world trip that takes in some great music from Portugal, Turkey, Siberia, Indonesia and Japan, we'll doff our hats to the late Bo Diddley and hear the greatest British Rock 'n' Roll song EVER. Apparently.

    Rachael Neiman:
July’s 'Rachael Neiman Experience' is back to 2-hours again, and what a fun-packed 2-hours it is! In honour of the Indie Tracks festival, due to take place on July 26th and 27th at the Butterley heritage railway site near Ripley, we play songs by a number of the artists set to appear including Mono Taxi, Je suis Animal, Still Corners, The Mai 68s, The Kabeedies, Liechtenstein, Shrag, Town Bike, Brontosaurus Chorus, The Bobby McGee's, Strawberry Story, Lardpony, The Deirdres and Helen Love.
Continuing the indiepop theme we have some more bands who could be possible future Indie Tracks stars such as Balbec, the royal trumpets, Sing Songs, Bear Cat, Help Stamp Out Loneliness and Stickpin rubbing shoulders with beautiful noise from London's Comanechi and wonky pop from The Stark Palace.
Elsewhere we have superb French riot grrrl from CobSOn and Gorgones and more of the homegrown variety from Amy Pennington, Drag Your Heels and Helen's Evil Twin plus a sneak preview of the forthcoming Ladyfest Manchester fund-raising compilation.

    Rocker:
This month's three hour show from Rocker features two new sessions - a debut from Bristol's Indie-folk troupe McDowell, and a second from Stoke's finest punk-poppers Horowitz. As part of a preview of this month's Indietracks festival there's tracks from the fantastic new LP from The Wave Pictures, as well as tracks from some of the other bands appearing, including The Manhattan Love Suicides; The Wedding Present; and A classic education.
There's also new tracks from The Short Stories; Clouds; Able & Baker; Tindersticks; Solomun; Half Man Half Biscuit; Portishead; Ashley Reaks; BETTY & THE WEREWOLVES; and First Aid 4 Souls. There's a killer new techno/house track from Laurent Garnier; a new single from The School; new dubstep from Ramadanman; new drum & bass from Chase & Status; and a Peel's Big 45 written by the late Bo Diddley - can you guess which one?
As well as little known acts, here's this month's little known fact: The only nation whose name begins with an "A", but doesn't end in an "A" is Afghanistan.

    Yank Sizzler:
Tea cups and poodles, the summer's been superbly mild here in Kansas allowing us to enjoy brand new recordings by Tilly & The Wall, Dr. Dog, Genghis Tron, The Vivian Girls, Ad Astra Per Aspera and Islands amongst others.
I've also got live recordings from Kid Koala and Pisstank and great older classics show up throughout from Sister Nancy, Joan Baez, Dale Hawkins and Hank Williams.
Lastly a time spanning debate on the beauty of Isobel Campbell vs Francoise Hardy for it is summer and lust is in the air.

Je Suis Animal - Eardrums Interview with Anthony and Elin

    February 18th, 2008 by Knut

"Self-taught magic from a book" is the debut album from two Norwegian girls and two English boys in a band with a French name, Je Suis Animal. The album is released today, and I must say I’ve waited a long time for this record. in fact, I’ve waited for it for about as long as I’ve run this blog.

I think I heard Je Suis Animal for the first time in 2005, and their sound was so different from everything other Norwegian bands did at the time. Their sound is still different, and the album has become a wonderful collection of dreamy, sharp-edged pop songs with influences from several decades of alternative music.

Before we let the band tell us more about the album, and how it was to record in the middle of the woods with a bear lurking around, we just have to look at their new video for one of the songs on the new album. "The Mystery of Marie Roget" is directed by Amund Hesbøl, and obviously inspired by the Bunuel/Dali classic "Un Chien Andalou" from 1929.

Before you start reading our interview with the band, I advice you to open their myspace in a separate window and press play on the music player. Then come back here and read the rest while listening!

We asked two of the founding members of Je Suis Animal, Anthony Barratt and Elin Grimstad, how they would describe their own music.

ANTHONY: Dreamy indie pop with some experimental elements. We like making light melodic pop songs, which under the surface lurks something a bit darker.

ELIN: Yeah, the themes I write about often have a sinister or strange twist to them. I would say we play melodic indie pop, inspired by 60’s pop and psychedelia as well as 80’s indie pop. We like the naive combined with the more complex.

Tell us the story about how it all started, and I’m also curious about WHERE it all started? How did you meet each other?

ANTHONY: I met Elin eight years ago at art school in Bath, England. We shared the video editing studio – she was making cutout animation films and I was playing around with sound and to the frustration of my tutors, calling it art! There weren’t many people in Bath that were into indie music. She played me a tape of some songs she had made on 4-track, and I thought it was great so we started to make demos at her apartment.
Elin moved back to Norway in 2003. She found Merete through a mutual friend, and Matt joined the band on drums even though he had never played drums before. I came to Oslo to visit Elin in the summer of 2004. We had a few jams in a tiny room at Hersleb Skole and it was great fun. That whole trip to Oslo was fantastic and so I moved here six months later.

Your new album "Self taught Magic from a Book" is released today on the small indie-label Perfect Pop records. The story of how it was recorded is quite special, and I’ve heard that it includes a bear and a community hall in the middle of the woods… Tell us the whole story!

ANTHONY: We first came into contact with Perfect Pop three years ago, after they heard our demo, which we’d recorded on minidisks and a few crap microphones in that tiny room at Hersleb Skole. We rushed into Spendless Studios, where most Perfect Pop bands make their albums. But it was a catastrophe! We probably drove the poor sound engineer insane. We were only really comfortable playing together, and so layering each instrument individually didn’t work for us at all. There wasn’t the option to record as a band because the live room was so small. Things took too long to get right and we basically ran out of time and energy.

I’ve often thought that there’s a certain magic created when a band plays together and that doesn’t always come across when you layer the instruments separately. Being a fan of sixties music I started reading about the distant microphone techniques that engineers used back then. When you use that approach, you’re not looking to separate things from one another, it’s more a case of getting a nice sound from very few microphones. We had already bought an 8-channel desk at the start of 2006 with some money we got for ‘Fortune Map’ being used in the film Tommy’s Inferno. As we were intending to use that desk for these recordings, it was a basic necessity to use distant miking in order to record everything together live. We didn’t have hundreds of channels and microphones available to us, but friends of ours kindly leant us what they could. What we needed was a room that had a nice natural ambience.

A friend of ours knew of a really remote community hall in the woods in Hedalen. It looked pretty scary in the photograph! But it had a great big room with nice acoustics and plenty of space for everyone to play. So we booked it. Then we were told to watch out, as a bear had killed some cattle on a nearby farm. Finding the community hall on the way down was like something out of a horror film as it was so foggy and dark. Fortunately we found the place and got all the gear inside without meeting our grizzly neighbour. We stayed there for a week and pretty much worked non-stop. It was just a pity that there weren’t any showers!

The best thing about recording in the middle of the woods is that there is very little to distract you, and you can start or finish at any time of the day. Some of the songs were recorded bright and early in the morning, whereas others were done late at night. It’s interesting how this can affect the music. It was also very beautiful and inspiring to look out the windows whilst playing and see the snow falling or fog coming down.

What I’ve heard so far from the new album sounds in my opinion both lighter and more "pop" than the older songs. Do you agree? How do you feel that the sound of Je Suis Animal has developed since you released your debut single "Fortune Map" in 2005?

ANTHONY: I think that there came a point when we felt like developing songs a bit further. We stopped playing concerts immediately after our debut single was released which I suppose is a bit of an odd way to do things for a band just starting out. It felt like it was time to focus on writing, jamming and just trying different things. We have always loved pop music - the golden age of pop, that is. The songs on our album are all pretty varied in their arrangements as we were exploring what the ’sound’ of the band could be.

One of your songs is called "The Mystery of Marie Roget", which, if I’m right, is named after a dark murder mystery-story written by Edgar Allan Poe. You seem to like scary, dark and sinister themes for your songs, even for the most upbeat popsongs… Am I right? Are books in general a source of inspiration for you?

ELIN : A lot of things inspire me. Art, books, mystery stories, strange phenomenons, magic, poems, songs. And of course the people I know, things that happen, things that you’d wish happened, boyfriends, love off course and so on…

You’ve spent nine months making songs for the new album. How is a song by Je suis animal born?

ANTHONY: Nine months sounds like ages, but it didn’t feel like that. We started recording the rehearsals onto minidisk and that was useful as it meant we could take away ideas and work on them at home. Sometimes Elin would bring a finished song or she and I would write together, or we would jam something out until it turned into something else. One of the sweetest songs on the album, ‘Rousseau World’, came out of jamming like that. It’s handy recording rehearsals when a song almost writes itself like that. There’s a whole mountain of jams and unfinished ideas, which will probably pop up in future songs.

The album is released at almost the same time as you play on one of Norway’s most important festivals, By:Larm. Last time you played on By:larm (2005), you were contacted by a director who wanted your song in his movie (Tommy’s inferno). What do you hope will happen after this years by:larm?

ANTHONY: It would be nice to play lots around Scandinavia and the rest of Europe… especially some festivals this summer. Hopefully there will be some booking agencies at our gigs!

The sound of Je Suis Animal should be heard by the world! What are your plans for the release outside of Norway?

ANTHONY: Thank you! We’ve got plans to license the album in Australia and Japan. We’re looking to license it in the UK and US too.

I’ve waited with this one, but I just have to ask… Je suis animal….. a French name on a band from Norway and England. What is the French connection?

ELIN: To be honest - nothing really, but it sounds good - don’t you think? We like the French language. And the fact it’s grammatically wrong. And we really like French films and the Paris art movement in the 1920/30. I like wearing a beret too.

Let’s talk about your influences… On your myspace, you mention a lot of influences from the 80s and 90s like The Shop Assistants, My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, The Pastels, Talulah Gosh ++, but you’ve also got several 60s and 70s references on your list, like The Shangri-Las, Joe Meek, Nico and Faust, just to name a few. Are there any bands from the present that you feel inspired by or admire? …And… What do you think about the reunion of My Bloody Valentine?

ANTHONY: We like Broadcast very much. One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen was when they played London just before the release of their Pendulum EP. They were incredible and totally far out in a really psychedelic way. There’s also some lovely library style music being released on Ghost Box, a label affiliated with Broadcast. Another band we’ve all been listening to lately is Mahogany from New York… gorgeous dream pop but very upbeat and good to dance to.

I can’t quite believe that My Bloody Valentine are playing together again… let alone playing in Oslo. But I guess there’s a bit of a fan base here. It must be for the money but still… I am excited. Tell you the truth I’ve got my ear plugs at the ready! Give me that holocaustic one chord! Actually these days Elin and I are hooked on the early stuff, especially Ecstasy & Wine because the songs are so good. But I’d be surprised if they played anything from that album.

All our interviews in Eardrums end with a "Top5 of everything". What is Je suis animal’s "Top5 of everything"?

Top 5 Animals We’d Like To Be

    1. Owl
    2. Rhinoceros
    3. Squirrel
    4. Koala Bear
    5. Giraffe

Je Suis Animal play a release-concert at Blaa in Oslo today at 20:00. You can download two of their songs at NRK Urört. The album can be bought from Platekompaniet and other good record shops from today on.

  • 20+ Bands in 3 Nights = 1 Very Happy Popgurl

    Fev 25 2008, 15h54 por popgurl

    Thu 21 Feb – by:larm

It's very early morning back in January when I get an email out of the blue inviting me to give a keynote talk at by:Larm as part of their seminar. My son, ever the astute observer, rags on me: "I can't believe you get PAID to go to Norway and listen to rock bands!" I can only say "neither can I, I only hope you'll be as lucky one day."

    Wednesday

I arrive on a Wednesday morning. Not long thereafter, I'm in the main tent the night before the festival officially launches, overwhelmed by the 170 bands on the program and ready to overindulge.

First up are UK act The Kooks who play a short acoustic surprise set which is great fun, though I have to admit it's already faded into a hazy memory.

The Lionheart Brothers are next. They've got a lot of buzz amongst the Norwegians, who seem quite proud of their perceived UK success and great reviews. Their sound is much harder live than I'd expect and never manages to gel. At points their harmonies are so off-key, it makes me wince.

Tingsek follow doing their pretty whiteboy soul/reggae thing. He is a pretty boy, and he works it, and I have to admit that they play quite well even if it seems a bit too designed to make girls swoon. I didn't.

Last band I catch that night is Familjen, who doesn't disappoint with a super-energetic performance including a shirt that says "Det snurrar i min skalle" in dayglo letters that shine in the light. I'm told by someone who'd seen him a month ago that he's much better tonight, and I leave a little frustrated by the brevity of the half-hour set all acts are limited to, but feeling my faith in him is well-invested.

    Thursday

There wasn't anyone I was eager to see this night. I start at the main tent, which seems to be the congregation area. Metal band Harpiks open and are truly awful (even some of the metal fans I talk with think so), though I will give them credit for being the first band I've ever seen use chainsaws on fire as instruments.

Then I wind up following others' recommendations. I see Je suis Animal, who have pretty good buzz, but whom I find so bad, I walk out and go next door to the church where the tranquil acoustic people are performing. Liev Reed is in the middle of his set. He's got a lovely voice and is a terrific guitar player, but he's kind of boring and I'm getting sleepy.

I head back to DagA where Lukestar side project Truls & The Trees are on stage. You'd think that with 9 people on stage, they could make some noise, but they've got almost no energy and I am seriously unimpressed. I leave again for the church next door where I catch Oslo's Therese Aune who blows me away completely. She's a tiny and incredibly sweet humble looking little girl who pounds the piano and sings like a banshee - beautiful, powerful, moving, and completely original.

Then back to DagA where Benni Hemm Hemm offer up a performance that's very well received, even if I find them boring. Again, you'd think that many people could make more noise and offer more energy, but it's a highly competent if slightly cold and languid orchestral set. The final act of the night is Ungdomskulen who are very nice men, but whose "punk prog" music is definitely not for me and who are so loud that the vibrations make my stomach cramp, sending me home to bed.

    Friday

By this point I'm a little concerned, 11 bands and only 2 that really impressed me. But fear not, from here out, it's one slice of heaven after another.

First up is The Fine Arts Showcase at Park Teatret. They're my favorite Swedish band and despite the bad sound quality, they don't disappoint, playing a set that includes a lot of "Radiola", the singles from "Sings Rough Bunnies", and a couple of new songs to boot. Gustaf dedicates my favorite of his songs "TocarBrother In Black" to me, and I'm thinking I could head back to Kansas content at that point.

Then I catch a couple of Looptroop Rockers songs at Sentrum Scene, but Swedish whiteboy hip-hop is just not for me and I leave in hopes of catching Katzenjammer, but they've just finished their set, so I head back to Sentrum Scene where I see Salem Al Fakir. He's got a happy energetic performance style, and though it's not my genre, it's well worth seeing and the crowd loves him.

Then it's off to the small club John Dee where Bergen girlband Miss Motor put on a very fun show of 3 minute pop-punk numbers. I'm beginning to suspect that the women are going to rule this conference, a sense that's confirmed when I see Miss Li next. She's amazing - so radiantly joyous that my friend's headache disappears along with my own fatigue, and we leave happy to our very cores.

I tried to see Lykke Li next since she's got so much buzz, even if I'm far less than sold on her, but the line is long so I pop back to Sentrum Scene and catch The Violent Years' last 2 songs which leaves me regretting that I didn't see it all. What I heard sounded a bit like they might be thinking "what worked for Madrugada might work for us," but hey, that's fine with me. I'll be investigating them further.

The night ends with a power performance by what might be the most-buzzed artist, Ida Maria, who is all energy and has the crowd eating out of her hand. She's very fun, but not really very original and most of her songs seem to be one lyric repeated over and over. She's really good but I'm unconvinced.

Oh yeah, during the day I gave my keynote which was very well received. I talked about online fan community - how the internet has transformed fandom and what that means for artists and labels.

    Saturday

Now it's the last day and I'm starting to get really sad realizing this is going to end so soon. In the afternoon I'm invited for "a surprise adventure" for international delegates. A dozen of us are taken to Oslo's well-kept secret, Emmanuel Vigeland's mausoleum. He's the little brother of the guy who did the sculpture park and his life's work was to paint the entire inside of this brick inverted-U shaped building with paintings so similar to his brothers' sculptures, I wonder what happened in their childhood to give them such common issues. The building has the unusual acoustic quality that all sounds reverberate for 12 seconds. There are no windows, and by the light of 2 candles, folk singer Unni Løvlid gives us a gorgeous voice-only performance of traditional Norsk folk that gives new meaning to the term "drowned in sound," which is kind of ironic since moments later I find myself talking to the fellow Drowned In Sound has sent to cover by:Larm.

I'm on a panel about digital music later that afternoon that again goes well and I meet several great people and learn several cool things I didn't know before. Fellow panelist, Jone Nuutinen, from super-cool about-to-be-Europe's-biggest street team site Urbanited, easily takes the award for person-who-looks-most-like-a-rock-star even if he's not one.

Madrugada fan that I am, the first act I catch that night, at John Dee, is Charlotte and the co-stars, who Madrugada's Frode Jacobson is producing. I can see the connection and am favorably impressed and look forward to hearing the record that results.

Then I race a few blocks to catch I Was A King who I just missed the night before. They're really good and make me feel good about having bought their record on eMusic before coming.

Floored as I was, I then take my friend Marika to see Miss Li, who's now at a much bigger club with a much bigger but equally adoring audience. Once again, she lights up the room with her smile and I leave bouncing and completely enamored.

There's no one really exciting in the next time slot, so we take a chance on the horribly-named All that and a Bag of Chips. Despite the funny name and humorous t-shirts that say things like "The Bass" and "The Guitar" and "The Vocals" their sound has no humor at all, and they're ok, but not that good, so we leave and head to Mono.

There we catch Miss Motor again, who are equally fun the second time. They're followed by another badly-named band, Harry's Gym, which is fronted by the woman who plays guitar for I Was A King. She's a very compelling character with more pedals for guitar effects than I've ever seen except for the Wrens' Charles Bissell, and they're really good, but their songs are very similar to one another and I'm glad the set is only half an hour.

Then we head back to Sentrum Scene for Superfamily who turn out to be expat Americans (who knew?). The place is so crowded and I'm so short that I can't see for the first half. When I finally find a spot where I can see, I realize seeing them without SEEING them is missing the point entirely. They're a fun live act, that's for sure, but the songs are nothing special and I start thinking that it would have been better if the two dancing backup guys could actually dance as well as the people they're spoofing.

Now, alas, it's 1 in the morning and the festival is way too close to being over. I head up to the delegate-only club Stratos which is located on the top floor of the old opera house with a walk-around terrace. Someone offers me a glass of champagne, and I sip it, shivering, looking at the view and thinking that this is just about as good as it gets. Slagsmålsklubben give the final show and, just as Stacey promised when she told me I HAD to see them, they are extremely entertaining and danceable. It's a perfect end to a fantastic weekend.

Final analysis: Well planned, well organized, well run, and wonderful festival. If the best band is to be judged by who leaves you happily humming their songs and ready to buy their complete collection, the festival belongs to Miss Li, someone I'd never given a second thought beforehand and could easily have missed entirely (thank goodness my friend who'd seen her told me otherwise!). Oslo's a great city. 23 bands in 4 nights and only a few of them disappointing. It's one of the best weekends of my life.
