  • My Music History...

    Dez 28 2008, 19h06 por alexmcrobs

Let’s take a musical journey through my life...

1992: Birth. I’ve been told I was humming as I exited the womb.

1993-1997: Sesame Street, Sharon Lois and Bram, and The Muppets.

My first CD purchased with my own money was Shania Twain. I made my parents take me to Sam the Record Man at age four and listened to it days on end. Man, I Feel Like A Woman! I could probably still sing all the lyrics if you asked me to.

My parents attempted to foster good music taste in me. We had a huge C.D and tape collection and my parents raised me, pretty much, on Barenaked Ladies. Other favourites were The Corrsand The Beatles. Although Girl Power hit me hard – NSYNC, 98 Degrees, soulDecision, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, The Spice Girls – I still secretly loved the classics my parents shared with me. I brought in Santana and Michelle Branch’s The Game of Love to Girl Guide’s “Favourite Songs!” night while the rest of the girl guides brought in Britney Spears.

    SEVENTH GRADE
    2004-2005

One word: Chum. This radio station helped me mainstream it out in middle school and fit in with the crowd. Among my typical favourites were Jeremy Fisher’s TocarHigh School and TocarHey Julie by Fountains of Wayne.

The boy I had a crush on liked Neil Young and The Beatles (His favourite song was Hey Jude.)

    EIGHTH GRADE
    2005-2006

I saw Bob Kemmis open for Jann Arden, and The Perishers for Sarah Mclaughlin, and immediately fell in love with the two. Especially Bob Kemmis. Hello, creepy emails to the man who probably didn’t get much fan mail. He always replied. I hope he doesn’t think I’m weird. Because, well, I was this close to being one of those fucked up celebrity stalkers (He was a celebrity in my eyes.)

My three best friends in middle school had varying music tastes. The first, who I am still best friends with (and managed to slightly influence her to better artists), liked Family Channel Hits – i.e. Hannah Montana, The Cheetah Girls, disneymusic, etc.
Best Friend 2 liked Death Cab for Cutie, Jem, and Jimmy Eat World. (AKA The O.C. mixes)
Best Friend 3 was a hipster – I don’t even know the names of the music she listened to. She was really wild and changed her mind every five minutes. I’ll guess that she liked things like Belle and Sebastianand Tilly and the Wall– a little beyond her time. Although her taste and style changed daily. She now attends alternative school and I hadn’t seen her since eighth grade when I ran into her at a bar. She smoked about 18 cigarettes in the time we spent together on the patio. If I hadn’t been drunk...I probably would’ve made up some reason to leave.

A friend outside of school sent me towards Teddy Geiger, Elvis Perkins, and The Artic Monkeys. THANK YOU!

    NINTH GRADE
    2006-2007

I went through weird music phases in grade nine. I was nostalgic over my favourite pop hits of the 90’s – looking back on it, in my opinion, it was a little too soon. My parents continued to attempt to influence my taste in music by taking me to see Micheal Franti and Spearhead at the Guverment and various musicals– i.e. Wicked and We Will Rock You.
I caught on to the musical trend and was so obsessed that I made my mother enroll me in a theatre Company. I was obsessed with music from what I saw live, as well as Rent, Hairspray, and the few musicals I was in: as Anne in Anne Of Green Gables (my big claim to fame) as well as Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof, and smaller parts in Annie, and Bye Bye Birdie. Unfortunately, I realized I’m completely and utterly uncoordinated and can’t take dancing roles, and thus my short-lived “stardom” came to it’s end.
Oh, also, my school choir made me obsessed with classical & 4-part music. Hello, Il Divo and Mozartin my library. We also performed a wonderful arrangement of Billy Joel’s TocarAnd So It Goes which I will always associate with my choir crush on the bass section lead. He performed those Ooohs so god damn well!

    TENTH GRADE
    2007-2008

Fall 2007 – My older sister attempted to help my suffering music tastes and introduced me to The Mountain Goats, Tegan and Sara, TV on the Radio. I DISCOVERED Regina SpektorWHICH CHANGED MY LIFE. I saw her perform in October at The Kool House. Later in the fall I began writing my own music (aka emo beats) on piano about death and weird gothic shit. I listened to artists like Bayside, The Weakerthans, Paolo Nutini, The Clash, Bjork.

Winter/Spring 2008- In early winter I listened to Kimya Dawson, Damien Rice, The Smiths, and other slow-moving music. However, my ex boyfriend who I began dating in December really changed and influenced my taste in music. He loved M.I.A, Fiest, New Pornographers, C.S.S, Imogen Heap, etc.

His friends, who I began rolling with as well, got me hooked on Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens, a little Ron Sexsmithand R.E.M.
I went to the M.I.A concert in June with my boyfriend and my sister, at which point, I threw up before she came on. A little too much mixing of substances, yes. My biggest mistake in my life thus far.

And summer? This would be my time to embrace the pop music at Camp as well as abroad on a Blyth Trip in Italy. At camp, I loved New Kids on the Block’s comeback music, Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours. Also, Sara Barielles’ Love Song. In Italy, I loved their taste – it was like, they got all of our pop music five years later. It was a little bit of an oldschool jam on every radio station, in every store. And at the clubs, they had recent American Music so we embraced Radar by Britney Spears and Shake It by Metro Station. Oh, also, one of my roommates shared with me Norweigan Recycling and boy, I loved it. Although it isn’t in my library – I don’t know how or where to download/purchase it – I listen to it on YouTube.

    GRADE ELEVEN
    Now.

I suppose my current favourites range from MGMT, Rachael Yamagata, Fiona Apple, Kate Nash, Imogen Heap. A bit of Architecture in Helsinki, and beirut.
Oh! And one of my sister’s friends, Char McGee. I found her old CD which she made by herself, and really like her music.

My current best friends do not share the same music tastes as me at all. One loves country, another, punk, and another, dance music. The last one is good to have parties with because she makes rockin playlists. As much as I love that kind of music, I don’t know names or have much in my own music library.

I have also really begun to enjoy Original Movie Scores (John Powell’s P.S I Love You, and Cliff Eidelham’s Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants.) I love Eddie Vedder’s Into the Wild music – the lyrics are beautiful. And if you have a chance, be sure to check the album art. It’s quite something.

Sooo...I doubt anyone completely read through that...
But it was fun to take a trip down memory lane.

  • 50 Questions About My Top 50

    Ago 15 2008, 20h09 por passionpink

    1. How did you get into 29? (Fred & Ginger)
I love classic movies, and I love Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and I love their movies. So naturally I had to put some of their songs on my iPod. They’re so much fun!

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Aaliyah)
TocarAre You That Somebody? It was a great video.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Thom Yorke)
From his solo album, probably all of Analyse. The first line rolls off the tongue so well:

A self-fulfulling prophecy of endless possibility

And also maybe Harrowdown Hill. With Radiohead…the list is endless! The lyrics from TocarA Wolf At The Door are so much fun, and are so meaningful with so much subtext…so probably the whole song.

    4. How did you get into 49? (Otis Redding)
Watching those old Time Life music informercials at 2 in the morning. Also, I made a CD of his songs for my mom and I ended up loving it too.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Feist)
I don’t get whole albums a lot of the time. I have all of The Reminder, though, and about half of Let It Die.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (Gregory Isaacs)
Either Private Beach Party or TocarStranger In Town.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Bruce Springsteen)
TocarSad Eyes, maybe. Or TocarStreets of Philadelphia. But mostly the thing I notice with those songs are how pretty they are and how awesome his voice is in them.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Eric Clapton)
The unplugged version of TocarLayla, of course. I do love the version with Derek and the Dominos, though.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (The Beatles)
For a long time it was Let It Be, but now I’m really loving The White Album and currently it’s probably Happiness Is a Warm Gun.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (Amy Winehouse)
I love her music. Me and Mr Jones makes me happy, I guess.

    11. What is the worst song by 40? (Dionne Warwick)
Blegh, probably something annoying that the record company made her sing. I only like her classic songs with Burt Bacarach.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Tori Amos)
It’s gotta be TocarSweet the Sting…though I also adore TocarCrucify.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Leona Lewis)
Not many…if any at all. She’s a pretty new artist and I just started listening to her.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (Etta James)
    TocarAt Last…of course, cliché.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (M.I.A.)
Yes…and not just TocarPaper Planes which everyone is currently crapping all over, but I don’t know…so many. M.I.A. is like a formula for happy. 20 Dollar, 10 Dollar, Amazon, Jimmy….all of her music pretty much makes me happy.

    16. Is there a song by 25 that makes you sad? (Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong)
No…they make me feel happy and romantic...lol

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (John Williams)
Probably tunes from countless movies that I saw when I was younger…he scored an awful lot of them.

    18. What's your favorite lyric by 11? (Lily Allen)
    Probably from TocarLittlest Things…so sweet!!

Drinking tea in bed, watching DVDs
When I discovered all your dirty grotty magazines
You’d take me out shopping, and all we’d buy is trainers
As if we ever needed anything to entertain us

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1? (Radiohead)
Thom Yorke is so much love. As well as Jonny Greenwood. And Ed O’Brien. Or…well…all of them.

    20. Is there a song by 14 that makes you happy? (Audrey Hepburn)
Yes. Definitely Just You Wait from My Fair Lady…she actually sang a lot of this one :P

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Green Day)
Um, how about me being 7 and liking Dookie, or their resurgence in 2004 when everybody and their mother was listening to them? The American Idiot video was classic. Oh, high school.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Mariah Carey)
Maybe TocarSweetheart…she takes me way back. The first album I ever bought was one of hers. She was so much better back in the day.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Ray Charles)
TocarAmerica The Beautiful? I heard that was by him. Lol. If not, probably TocarHit The Road Jack.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Elton John)
    Caribou.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Sufjan Stevens)
To Be Alone With You…so soft and amazing.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Bernard Herrmann)
The score for North by Northwest. My gateway to classic movies.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Regina Spektor)
Soviet Kitsch!! It rules ALL. I love her SO MUCH.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? (The Smashing Pumpkins)
TocarThirty-Three, hands down. They have SO MANY good songs though. TocarFor Martha might be a close second.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (The Decemberists)
TocarThe Crane Wife 3. I liked it so I decided to get into them.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8? (Corinne Bailey Rae)
TocarTill It Happens To You…it tells the story of a relationship that has lost its spark so beautifully.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Alicia Keys)
Never, damn it…what a show that would be!

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Robin Thicke)
    TocarShooter!! I love Shooter.

    33. How did you get into 12? (Fiona Apple)
It was 2004 and I was watching one of those VMA Past Winners Video marathons on MTV2. I saw TocarCriminal, loved the song (not the video), and was hooked.

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (U2)
I don’t know. I only have The Joshua Tree and a few songs from War and Achtung Baby and none of those songs suck.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Queen)
TocarWe Will Rock You. I was 6 and a cheerleader in elementary school. It was our fight song. Lol.

    36. What is the first song you ever heard by 48? (Paramore)
crushcrushcrush. I had previously refused to listen to TocarMisery Business. I love them now.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (Jann Arden)
    Never…and probably never will.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? (Henry Mancini)
Moon River, of course. That was just composed by him, though. Or maybe Lara’s Theme from Doctor Zhivago.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (Judy Garland)
    TocarOver The Rainbow. Who’s wasn’t?

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? (Cat Power)
As a whole, You Are Free. It’s the only album of hers I think has no misses. Her others might have 2 or 3. My next faves are The Greatest and Moon Pix.

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? (The White Stripes)
Not happy…maybe complacent would be the best way to describe it. There’s No Home For You Here, anyone???

    42. What is your favorite album by 41? (Muse)
Black Holes and Revelations…not original at all.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24? (Nirvana)
TocarCome As You Are or TocarAbout A Girl

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? (Norah Jones)
High school. Hanging out and being soothed by Come Away With Me.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35? (Billie Holiday)
TocarStrange Fruit. So beautiful, evocative, and tragic.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? (Ella Fitzgerald)
TocarBasin Street Blues? She is so the queen of jazz in my heart.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4? (Coldplay)
A Rush Of Blood To The Head. So much awesomeness.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37? (TLC)
    Chilli!

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? (Michelle Branch)
    TocarEverywhere.

    50. What is your favorite song by 20? (John Mayer)
TocarBelief. Currently I’m LOVING TocarSlow Dancing in a Burning Room, though.

  • The Perfect Autumn Playlist

    Set 29 2007, 14h20 por roman2

Well... it's getting slightly colder outside, the leafs are turning into red, brown and yellow and instead of drinking an ice coffee after coming home i'm making a cappuccino. I've already changed the surfergirls wallpaper to something more autumnal, and the tea pot on my desk is filled with flavoured black or fruit tea, kept warm by a tealight giving the perfect atmosphere. The only thing still missing is the perfect Playlist :)
My current one contains artists like Anna Ternheim, Dar Williams, Fiona Apple, Jann Arden, Five for Fighting, Leonard Cohen (well, only TocarFamous Blue Raincoat at the moment), Melissa Etheridge, The Cardigans, Sister Hazel, Tori Amos and a bunch of less known interprets. I even tried Katatonia (but they somehow felt a little to dark) and Dream Theater (The Ministry of Lost Souls feels quite autumnally :) ).
But somehow it doesn't feel perfect. So i make it up to you, deer last.fm users ( :) ) to suggest me some songs and artists that perfectly fit the mood i've tried to describe (preferable some songs from my top50, cause there's a bigger chance that i've got the song)

  • Rate Your Music Sucks

    Set 28 2007, 4h33 por AxemRangers

[19:15] Uninterpretative: it honestly does look like discogs for retarded people

It wasn't too long ago that I started seeing lots of folks on last.fm linking to pages on a site called "Rate Your Music," primarily for things like favorite album lists, but also in their profiles for no specific reason. Now, of course, for the longest time, I never followed or payed mind to these links at all. But as I started seeing more and more of them, I became embarrassingly intrigued as to why users on a music-oriented social networking site (of sorts) would be feverishly linking to another music-oriented social networking site. So, one day I pointed my Firefox to www.rateyourmusic.com and set up an account to see what it was all about.

After using many of the site's features, I can say with total conviction that I'm not at all sure what it is all about.

Rate Your Music ("RYM") appears to be a poorly conceived, unpleasant chimera of MySpace, last.fm and Discogs. It encourages the same sort of music discussion as last.fm, but with giant, ultra-generalized cluttered forums and no "shoutboxes" on artist pages, any real conversations are likely carried out through bullets back and forth from one user's page to another's. Otherwise, the conversation seems to consist primarily of someone writing a lousy, poorly worded 2/3 paragraph "review" of a record, and someone responding with another "review" a couple of months later to call them a fuckkin faggot dipshit dumbass.

Adding a new release to the database can be quite a chore. Indeed, to add a split release (like I wanted to do with the Merzbow / MSBR 7" "Destructible Foundation / Drain") you can't have the release link to each of the artists separately: I had to add a new artist entry for "Merzbow / MSBR." What the hell. I'm not sure how one goes about submitting a compilation featuring various artists; I never dared to do it myself. And yet despite many inane restrictions and hoops you need to jump through to enter releases, specifying things like label, catalog number, media, tracklistings and other integral information is not required.

    what

Users are also permitted to submit releases that they don't own, and in some cases, releases that they have in all likelihood never seen in their entire lives.

Visually the site is an eyesore, and can be very difficult to navigate. Organizing your collection is much more trouble than it's worth, and isn't as easy to refer to or to export as it is on Discogs. When marking releases that you own, you are told to specify the format that you own it in. Which is uhhhh COMPLETELY assbackwards since if a release has more than one format, it should probably have multiple entries. (This option seems to exist primarily for the purpose of openly encouraging users to mark albums which they own illegally or digitally in their "collections.") Though the site is quick to link you to places where you can (might be able to) buy the albums it has entries for, their is no way to list items of your own.

I could go on and on, and indeed originally I intended to! But the long and short of it is that Rate Your Music tries to do too many things at once, while at the same time leaving out key features that are necessary to make what it's trying to accomplish relevant. And even the things it does do, it does poorly or in a very roundabout manner that's covered by and exceeded in quality by other sites. Please stop giving them advertising revenue.
