  • Lost Classic CD Review - Tommy Bolin - Teaser

    Jun 11 2008, 19h56 por ripplemusic

The world is full of great, "lost" artists. Musical geniuses who flew by too fast for the mainstream to catch up, just a fleeting burst of lightning then they were shuffled and misfiled in the archives of the past, leaving the world a bit more barren for their loss. And it's a shame, because many of these artists had such a tremendous gift to bring, yet it somehow never got heard.

And without a doubt, one guitarist who deserved to reach a larger audience was Tommy Bolin.

Just the mention of his name can provoke an extreme of reaction: On one side you'll find his devoted fans, a dedicated cult following who'll talk endlessly about the brilliance of his playing and his roll in the creation of hard rock and jazz fusion. On the other side, you'll find those who associate his name only with the demise of their favorite band, either Deep Purple or the James Gang. And then, there are those who've just never been lucky enough to hear of the guy.

So today, we'll set the record straight. There was not a guitarist who came to light in the '70's who had such a gift of tone and fluidity, or was as versatile and creative as Tommy Bolin. Read more at: Tommy Bolin

  • イーグルハイヴカーン

    Ago 21 2007, 18h37 por niro26

    Eagles

    The Hives

    Chaka Khan

  • Cheyenne & Funk #49

    Jan 14 2007, 19h22 por crimson-regret

Well, I must say I really like Cheyenne Kimball's music. She sure is a talented lass. What I like about her music is that it kinda has that good ol' southern rock feel to it and yet still exudes those good, fun vibes of pop/rock. She is now one of my fave pop/rock artists in addition to Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton. Now that Michelle doesn't do solo stuff anymore, (I do hope she makes a solo comeback) I find myself listening to Cheyenne more. Cheyenne's music is somewhat reminiscent of James Gang and Lynrd Skynrd, and so I was reminded of that song Funk #49, which is an awesome song too. Her cd is great for long road trips in the car and so is 15 Greatest Hits.

  • Funky

    Ago 13 2006, 5h58 por Ryenke

Tonight I'm doing a nostalgia funkin' out.

I miss funk. (Funk, not Disco!) Funk, to me, was 70's music you just had to move to, but unlike disco it had fabulous brass sections or fantastic electric guitar funky riffs. Primarily heard on the RnB radio stations. Oh, my childhood. Sublime funk brass songs: Stevie Wonder TocarSuperstition, Earth Wind and Fire September. Sublime electric guitar funk: Wild Cherry TocarPlay That Funky Music, The Hollies TocarLong cool woman in a black dress. And, Sublime funk on every count: Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)

Man, even a lot of "rock" music fare of my childhood had plenty of funk influences: like Chicago and James Gang. (Say, learn something new everyday, I should have known from the voice, but I didn't: Joe Walsh was the prime mover of the James Gang)

Speaking of the band Chicago, I've been missing those incredible pop song harmonies in the chorus that were prevalent in the 70's. Like Chicago, The Eagles, The Little River Band and like Grand Funk Railroad - Some Kind of Wonderful. Some kind of wonderful, indeed!

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not knocking music since then, the 70's actually makes up a smaller proportion of music in my library than any decade that follows (including the first decade of this millenium). But sometimes I just get in a mood. A funky mood, I guess ;-)

  • If you like the drums...

    Jul 9 2006, 1h30 por mjnesq

Four bands to keep in mind:

Led Zeppelin -- John Bonham may be the greatest rock drummer I've ever heard. That is, Led Zeppelin's drum arrangements are some of the best I've ever heard.

James Gang -- The drummer, Jim Fox, just loves to hit stuff, and the rest of the band was kind enough to give him some space. Plus he looks just like my dad. I've got a picture of him holding a joint and everything. It's uncanny.

The Foo Fighters -- Not surprising that a band with two drummers has some really great drum tracks. Specifically on their second album, The Colour And The Shape. Everlong and Hero are great examples.

Ozma -- Basically, the drumming in most of Ozma's work is very interesting. There are so many changes in tempo and meter during any given song that it's impossible to become bored listening to it.
