  • Review: Rock Sound magazine CD 119

    Nov 11 2008, 22h23 por Aurist-

Right, I've decided to start reviewing CDs that come with Rock Sound magazine. They usually feature some pretty versatile stuff with often some bands who would otherwise be ignored. Although sometimes they feature crappy popular shit to appease the readership, but hey, different strokes.

The slipcase is a lovely pink this time round, so I'm happy, but I wish they'd stop doing that stupid "man listening to something" face on all of them, and do something new.

    Anyway, yeah, the music.

    -

Track 1: These Arms Are Snakes - Woolen Heirs

The CD starts with a disappointment, as I've heard alot about these and the song's nowhere near as good as I had been expecting. Further listening reveals it's ok - it's got a nice feel to it and I like the bass. But it still feels like it just passes just outside of consciousness - a step or two away from interesting, even when the vocals start being cut up and it turns into what's essentially a variation on the Doctor Who theme tune with guitars.

    2. Satyricon - The Wolfpack

Awful, tepid, mid-paced pseudo-Ministry crap. Highly formulaic and boring. The vocals are half-arsed. Plus, it sounds exactly like their last album's title track. No surprises are in store here. It could have done with some black metal textures.

    3. Bison B.C. - TocarSlow Hand Of Death

Quite boring stoner-y stuff. The vocals are interestingly retched, but don't benefit by having what's basically gang-shouts behind them. Attracts attention by sounding jazzy for about 2 seconds and then reverts to exactly the same pretty tedious riffery. The tiny touches of cliché whammy'd single notes at the end of riffs just infuriated me.

    4. Wetnurse - TocarLife At Stake

Interesting intro until it starts sounding like a slightly discordant Metallica. The song then kicks in and it sounds better, but it reminds me too much of the earlier Satyricon song but at a decent pace, with some slightly more interesting, metallic riffs. Interestingly breaks down into an unusual, plucked and delayed, cleaner sound, but gives up and returns to the exact same sound as before.

    5. Gods And Queens - Track 5

A nice sound that feels how I imagine stadium rock would sound if it felt like it was all shoegaze-y and cut up and put in random order. (It sounds better than you might think from that description...) Has some lovely moments of what feels like not-quite climaxes, but I can't decide whether it would be better to make them full-fledged climaxes or not.

    6. Action Beat - Le Chap

For a band with an album called "The Noise Band From Bletchley" this is probably a rather apt sound: Bletchley is a dismal, grey place (in England) that probably only serves as a train link between London and Northampton; this song feels like a grey, instrumental version that's a link between Sonic Youth's "Stones" and the part with very few notes on "Kool Thing". Put basically, it's not even close to noise-rock. Still, for all of that, it's not too unpleasant - it has a decent quality to it that sometimes sounds good. I'm disappointed that their idea of noise is simply adding a touch of delay and reverb to guitars, although occasionally they add a touch of distortion which sounds good.

    7. Attack! Attack! - Too Bad Son

Think a cross between Kids In Glass Houses and Kids in Glass Houses. Yeah. I guess it has a touch of Lostprophets' more upbeat moments. But basically you take that and reduce the production values by about half, and you're there. If there's anything redeemable, it's the nice chord changes, but isn't that the same with most pop-punk bands anyway?

    8. Jackson United - TocarThe Land Without Law

Here's some more lightweight punk, this time in the vein of Alkaline Trio's unsubtleties and Green Day's political moanings and bitchings; but with mariachi-eqsue guitars. No, I don't care how punk or Rancid it sounds, it's bad.

    9. The Haunts - Underground

In terms of sounding interesting, this song's more like it, for sure. This is charming yet quite pompous goth-infused indie. The extremely english vocals can jar a touch, though, and that's coming from an english person who loves hearing english accents in songs! Quite alot of it sounds like a cliché hallowe'en-rock song, but somehow that makes me like it more, like watching a cartoon I haven't seen since childhood. I know it's bad, but I like it.

    10. Upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start - TocarGet to the Chopper

Ah, you can always rely on Rock Sound to provide one interesting post-rock or post-metal song per CD. I definitely like this one - it effortlessly drifts past generic post-rock and insteads like Red Sparowes doing a strange version of Faithless' "No Roots" album, except when it occasionally feels like a normal rock riff being repeated. The lighter guitars then come in and elevate the song and are rather lovely - think Explosions in the Sky with a bit more emphasis on groove provided by bass + drums. The pad that's introduced is awful, though, it doesn't fit with the song and it feels like it should be in background music to an old, unpopular robot-fighting PS2 game. Thankfully, it leaves and the drums have a great filter effect placed on them, although the EitS-like guitars keep being played backwards, which jars a touch. The drums being cut-up makes a nice ending.

    11. Maps & Atlases - TocarWitch

Dubbed a 'more abstract Foals', I certainly didn't expect it to sound like this... it feels like if Peter, bjorn and john jammed with some random indie band half the time, and the other half like Minus the Bear being led by Gruff Rhys from Super Furry Animals. I don't like it.

    12. William Control - Strangers

Poor New Order/Depeche Mode ripoff (don't call it an homage) with poorer emo-style vocals, all by WiL Francis from Aiden. Was this made with ejay? This wanted a sexy feel, like Davey Havok (AFI)'s Blaqk Audio (which was an actually successful homage while being rightfully its own) but it got nowhere near. Undanceable and sexless, with an emotionless feel despite the lyrics.

    13. Tortuga - TocarBury Me In You (Fatal)

Average-to-poor but with some off-kilter beat. Sounds like they can't decide whether they're screamo/hardcore or metal.

    14. a textbook tragedy - Intimidator

Metalcore - the word with the biggest precursor to (justified?) small-minded judgement in music? Either way, these guys are alright - a nice abrasive approach that elevates them from sounding tepid and formulaic. Doesn't do much, but does it acceptably, and the melodic section sounded really good until they made it sound like From First to Last. I like From First to last but that just feels like an unfocused attempt at a more cohesive sound. Oh, but that jazzy section almost melted me - it should have been longer! That annoyed me - it just returned to where they were at the start of the song.

    15. Viking Skull - TocarHair of the dog

If the name doesn't already say it all, this is the same old Orange Goblin-esque whisky-soaked rock nonsense that's far too popular. Poor songwriting lets this down immensely.

    16. Stuck Mojo - Tocar15 Minutes of Fame

    ...

Stone Sour vocals and lyrics, Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park) / Limp Bizkit raps, hard metal drumming, nu-metal guitar, symphonic elements... I'm confused and bewildered listening to it. It's beyond me what made someone put all these together. Nothing works with anything. It's unbelievably awful. An upsettingly disconcerting mess.

And that's all! Shame it had to end on that; Rock Sound usually put the more epic songs last!

  • KFLA Update 8/7 - Patton Oswalt, Dead Are Go Fest, Filthy Thieving Bastards, The…

    Ago 7 2008, 19h42 por TheKnitLA

    Saturday, August 16th
Peoples Republic of Comedy Present Patton Oswalt
    8:00 PM, $5
This show is in the Alterknit Lounge
Patton Oswalt has been headlining at comedy clubs all over the U.S. since 1996, as well as appearing in his own standup specials on Comedy Central and HBO. He was chosen as Entertainment Weekly's "It" comedian in 2002, and is a regular on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." His other television credits include appearances in "Seinfeld" and "NewsRadio," and he’s appeared in the films Starsky & Hutch, Man on the Moon, and Magnolia. The main thing to know is that if you have a sense of humor in good working and you come to see Patton, you’ll find yourself laughing, probably uncontrollably.

    Saturday, September 20th
Dead Are Go Festival starring Rezurex, Stellar Corpses, Calabrese, Cemetery Sex Cult, many more.
6:00 PM, $10 advance, $15 day of show
Clearly Rezurex has risen from the grave and awoken the dead. The group brings back the roots of early 1950s rock ‘n’ roll and combines them with influences of the 1980s, hence a range of influences that include both Elvis and Billy Idol. The L.A.-based band released their debut album, “Beyond the Grave,” on Fiend Force Records (Germany) in 2006 and quickly caught the attention of psychobilly fans, punks, goths and metal heads alike. Their latest Psycho Radio contains an appropriate 13 songs, including the poignant “Vampira Calling.”

    Saturday, September 27th
Filthy Thieving Bastards (with Spider Stacy of The Pogues), Old Man Markley, The Mighty Regis, Broke til Thursday
8:00 PM, $12 advance, $15 day of show
In the era of electronic media, it seems the art of storytelling has fallen by the wayside. Luckily, strewn throughout this modern landscape are a few remaining bards still willing to share with us their superbly executed, original songs and stories. The Filthy Thieving Bastards' songwriting duo of Johnny Bonnel and Darius Koski are two of these aforementioned bards and share time as punk stalwarts in the Swingin' Utters. Bassist Spike Slawson not only shares duties in both bands, but is also the lead singer for the infamous Me First & The Gimme Gimmes. Producer Randy Burk was called upon to play drums. A Making a very special appearance on The Bastards newest release is Spider Stacy of one of their most cited influences, the Pogues.

    Wednesday, October 1st
The Loved Ones, Jackson United, Beat Union
    7:00 PM, $10
“For as much as punk rock is about breaking down the barriers we build around ourselves, it’s a challenge to be a “people’s punk band” when the scene that spawned you wants you to stay inside its walls forever. But with their new, second album, Build & Burn, that’s just the challenge Philadelphia’s the Loved Ones are ready to take on. Broader-focused, more rock ‘n’ roll-inspired, and (dare we say it) catchier than ever before, the disc finds the quartet crafting a sound that’s as worthy of dive bars stages as it is of warming stadiums for Bruce Springsteen or Tom Petty. Forget the “pop-punk” tag that’s followed these guys just because they’re old hardcore kids (alumni of the Explosion, Trial by Fire, the Curse and Paint it Black, if you’re keeping score) with a gift for melody. If you have to pigeonhole it, Build & Burn is populist punk—and it’s also the best damned thing the Loved Ones have done.”-- Aaron Burgess, 2007

  • What's Ahead In '08: Part One

    Jan 27 2008, 20h00 por DreadfulHero

Here's what I'm looking forward to this year. 2005 was my busiest (and best overall) year of music, and a number of artists who released something that year are poised to take over 2008, too. And also some artists that haven't released anything since 2004. And also some of the more noteworthy acts of 2006. '08 is looking bright.

    Soonish:

Nada Surf - Lucky (February 5)
I've listened to this album once already, and I wasn't completely blown away by it. Maybe I never will be, but I expect for it to grow on me considerably by year's end.

What Made Milwaukee Famous - What Doesn't Kill Us (March 4)
Follow-up to one of the better debut albums I heard in '06.

Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (March 17 UK)
I recently reminded myself how good their last album was. I won't immediately import this, but I will wholeheartedly enjoy an illegal rip of it until I can find an import copy at a good price or until it comes Stateside.

The Hush Sound - Goodbye Blues (March 18)
THS is one of those bands that I swear should have more plays on my last.fm counter. I expect total plays to rise considerably with this new album. They're one of those bands that you just know has to get better with age.

South - You Are Here (April 15)
Early on I fell pretty hard for the band's last album, only to see it fall pretty hard down my Best of 2006 list by year's end. The two new songs from this album seem pretty solid though.

    Beyond:

    Ambulance LTD
    Still waiting, Marcus. Still waiting.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Indie snobs everywhere hate on this band now because they released one album everyone loved, and have never duplicated that formula since. Their last album was great though. Can't wait to hear what's next.

    Autolux
See Ambulance LTD entry. Replace 'Marcus' with 'Eugene, Greg, and Carla.'

Celebrity - Celebrity EP / New album
New EP gets released this Tuesday via iTunes only. I can't run iTunes on my computer. Aaron cries, then cries harder when he realizes he probably won't be able to find a DRM-free version of this anywhere.

    Coldplay - Prospeckt
I think I'm looking forward to this album more this year than last year. Not sure why.

    Deftones - Eros
I want to believe the band will release this album this year. But will they? We're talking about Deftones here. If it does, consider it one of my most anticipated for the year.

    Doves
All's quiet on the Doves front. Why? They should be done with the album now.

    dredg
I'm already feeling like I'm starting to repeat too many artists from last year's anticipation entry. Yes, I still want weird time signature changes and experimention.

    Ben Folds
A lot of people trashed his last album, too. I have no idea why. I've hardly listened to him since '05 though. I need a new album to remind me why I liked him.

    The Format
Pure speculation by this point, but please make it a reality, guys. If you make another album nearly as good as the last one, you will become one of my favorite bands. It takes two though.

    Giant Drag
I hope Annie's label woes doesn't hold up this album from being finished and released. I want to hear what sort of weirdness she comes up with next though.

Jackson United - Harmony and Dissonance
Foo Fighters guitarist's side project's second album. Not sure when it'll come out with the Foos going on their massive U.S. tour finally. But given that it has a title, I'm guessing it will be out before the end of the year.

    Kiss Kiss
Hey, they're the only band that released an album last year that will have one out this year! How do I know? They're already recording it. Makes sense though, given the last album's short length (incredible as it was notwithstanding).

    The Life and Times
I really don't know what to say other than I wish they'd basically follow this simple formula: TocarMy Last Hostage / Ave Maria² x 10. Then they would make the best album ever.

    The Like
Here's something you've never heard before: I like the Like (haha...). But boy, was Z Berg a silly young girl in (or out of) love (or at least pretending to be) on the last album. I felt awkward singing those songs while being a 23-year-old male. Will I feel any less awkward singing new songs as a 25/26-year-old male? Probably not... but hopefully a little maturity on their part will go along way for the best all-girl rock group around today.

  • A whole new bunch of bands

    Dez 11 2006, 3h17 por zar_igor

While everyone's getting sick with all this Christmas cheer and the warm weather outside I spent the last hour trying to listen to some new tunes.

I elimanated Elefant finally from my harddisk, and a successor is needed. I discovered a pretty perfect system to develope new kinds of music and bands. Maybe I'll tell you later on (beg me to!).

However, I just decided to try the following bands:
    New Hot Mexicans
    The Red Hot Valentines
    Bob Pollard
(all sound very much like The Strokes)
The Kinks (how could I not listen to them he last year?)
Tarkio (gosh, I MUST listen to Colin more)
    The Black Watch
The Lashes (some kind of cool!)
    Jackson United

Yay! Can't wait to try them all. Any suggestions or experiences with those bands? Tell me!
