O Isis formou-se em 1997 em Boston, Massachusetts. Atualmente residem em Los Angeles, Califórnia. Inspirados por Neurosis e Godflesh, decidiram pegar nas suas influências e construir algo que constituísse um processo de evolução que misturasse Post-Metal, Progressive Metal, avant-garde metal, sludge, entre outros estilos. As suas músicas são de longa duração (como é tradicional nos estilos a que pertencem) e o peso destas varia bastante.
