yeah, I used to be obsessive with websites like hiphopdx.com, datpiff, and blogspots but it was up to the point that they have reflected rap industry where it's all about the money so they only focus on website traffic and getting PAID with their side advertisements that they flooded their sites with the wackest stuff i've ever heard cuz there seems to be more rappers than fans out there...so I stopped that because filtering through pages of wack albums and playing every song just to find sparse gems wasn't my thing...so I made playlists of every dope song out there that I've came across thus far and had them on repeat to the point that I don't need to play the track to know how the lyrics go. current situations aren't giving me the fix that i want on my hip hop craving so i'm basically mentally starved since I have high expectations of what hip hop SHOULD be and artists aren't putting out lyrics on production to that caliber.

    • Mixtape Vol. III - Northern Soul

      Jan 21 2009, 3h25 por SI_Failed

Here’s a tape that’s not powerpop. Featuring Motown, (Northen) Soul, 60s Girl Groups and Beat Music as well as other miscellaneous genres by modern groups influenced by them. (No Supremes or Diana Ross though, sorrey) I’m a big fan of the 60s divas – Lesley Gore, Helen Shapiro, Evie Sands and Ronnie Spector. I’ve picked more than a few songs written by Ellie Greenwich, it’s pretty hard to find a song that wasn’t written by her. The new stuff is pretty diverse some how Fucked Up do soul songs too... that gives you some idea of the influence.

There was a ton of stuff from the modern era that I wanted to fit on the b-side but just couldn’t for the length of 45mins. Sahara Hotnights do a great cover of In Private (Dusty Springfield). Heaps of great modern soul beat bands like The Booze, Soda Pop Kids, Nobunny. Lots of covers from new and old groups. I’m going to have to post an outtakes of these songs so stay tuned for that one.

    • 501

      Ago 30 2007, 6h56 por zeppyfish

I have 501 artists listed with at least three plays on last.fm. From They Might Be Giants and Bob Dylan to Irma Thomas and Baobab, that's a lot of artists, isn't it? I mean, do other people listen to that many different artists? I guess I could go around and check other people's lists, but I'm just not feeling like it at the moment.

Right now I'm listening to the Moxy Fruvous version of Psycho Killer. Tomorrow, if all goes well and my voice doesn't give out, I shall be singing this song myself for the entire population of school district employees at the annual school year kick off dealio. Should be fun. Also, The Weight, which I'm now listening to, particularly the first few seconds so that I can play it approximately right. Luckily, it's one of those ragged songs that sounds good when you play it kinda right, since we're one of those ragged bands that play songs kinda the way they're supposed to sound.

We'll also be doing some Van Morrison, as we always do, and probably a Ray Charles tune. …

    • Marianne Faithfull - concert review

      Jul 17 2007, 22h28 por steerpike

Mon 16 Jul – Marianne Faithfull -Songs of Innocence & Experience

Billed as 'songs of innocence and experience' but a better description would have been songs of hope and resilience. At 60 years of age and having just recovered from treatment for breast cancer, Marianne Faithfull shows the bravery and determination to continue performing and her voice more than ever encapsulates the forcefulness of her character and courage which has been evident throughout her remarkable life.

She is visibly frailer now but still exudes a poise and regal dignity that explains how she can still attract an impressive list of collaborators and admirers. In recent years this has included the likes of Beck, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Damon Albarn, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker and David Bowie.

It's also perfectly understandable how she should collaborate so fruitfully with PJ Harvey for her last album - Before the Poison. Polly Harvey also specialises in modern blues songs about ordinary people, women mostly…
