Biografia

In Vain was formed by J. Haaland and A. Frigstad back in 2003, however the band first saw action during the summer of 2004 when recording their first release. The highly critically acclaimed “Will the Sun Ever Rise” was a three-track EP of unrelenting atmosphere, aggression and complexity. The release was embraced by metal heads and journalists alike. Fueled by the standing ovations and the great response from a united metal press, the band was soon back in the studio to record yet another. “Wounds” was released December 2005 and the music was more diverse, progressive and dramatic than ever, without sacrificing the brutal edge of its predecessor. Already at this point in the band’s recording career the strong musical craftsmanship is obvious with guest musicians playing saxophone, cello and percussion. Just like its’ debut EP, Wounds received fantastic reviews and the band was launched as one of the most promising acts in the extreme metal scene. Shortly after they landed a deal with the Norwegian based label Indie Recordings, as the label’s first signing.

Yeah those are good points. I think what I was trying to get at is people saying that one band was much greater than the other kind of hurts both bands.

I don't think that is just that... Both play (and played) progressive metal with lots of influence of extreme metal, bleak atmosphere and lyrics, with strong scandinavian (old) culture involved (things like forests, winter, the smooth and beautiful vocals, a little bit of mitology, a little bit of sadness). Also, the two bands have long songs with a little bit of jazz influences and they both come from the Nordics. Try to find a non-Opeth record more similar to "My Arms, Your Hearse", I doubt it (but if you know, say it, because I would LOVE to listen to).

Ænigma is a masterpiece! [6] I am not sure why everyone is trying to compare this band to Opeth. I think that you're only hurting both bands. They both play progressive metal, but that's about it. It's like trying to compare Coltrane and Rollins in order to say one is better even though they play different kinds of jazz. Both are unique and powerful; the same goes for Opeth and In Vain.

Ænigma is a masterpiece! [5] One of the great albums of the year, no doubt. Progressive death metal at its finest - as used to be Opeth (I'm not saying that today is bad, just not prog death anymore).
