(3 of 2)....all in all, it was an amazing, energetic show by one of Canada's most innovative, stellar indie bands today! The new touring band supported Brooke's guitar playing, and vocal contributions strongly. Caitlin Gallupe, Aden Collinge, Jordan Minkoff all sounded extemely cohesive and together and unless you were a die hard Immmaculate Machine fan like i am, Brooke's touring trifecta made it quite difficult to notice Kathryn's absence.....Kathryn, we missed you last night, and I long for the next time I get to see you play with Immaculate Machine! Thanks guys for a wonderful show last night! You certainly have made this music fan's year!

Immaculate Machine is my favourite band, and I had the unique opportunity of soaking in their live show last night in The Mansion's very intimate venue in Kingston, Ont....even without the beloved Kathryn Calder, I.M. was absolutely spectacular! They played a solid mix of tunes from Ones and Zeros, Fables and their new 2009 LP High On Jackson Hill...I approached Brooke before the show and had a good chat with him....I had corresponded with him on facebook before, and he remembered me! Brooke was very nice guy, and told me that he's loved their tour so far! He said it was the band's first time playing in Kingston, so it was really cool that I was on hand for that! I requested that they play "C'mon Sea Legs", which he gladly agreed to, while stating that it was "one of [his] favs!" They played it third, and Brooke said "This is for our friend Nat", which was really exciting! Setlist included

Jackson Hill is a nice album, and that's a bummer cause their previous works area awesome. I miss Kathryn, she brings something very special to IM, something Jackson Hill lacks of. Well, Immaculate Machine, I still love you.

There are a couple decent songs on Jackson Hill. I like Sound the Alarms a lot. That's really the only one that sticks out though. Overall, it's pretty average at best. Biggest problem: not nearly enough Kathryn Calder!

I like their new disc to be honest. Good progression from their older stuff.

Well, if you don't like it that much, just listen to their older songs. I'm hoping for an European tour anyway.

The new album just seems a little half baked to me. "...Fables" was a classic, and feautured some of their best work, but "...Jackson Hill" just seems like they've taken a few steps backwards. It's not horrible, but I'm not rushing to listen to it countless times like I've done with their previous albums. The highlights (not many of them) are strong though, namely "Thank Me Later".

All in all, when I first heard "Hill", I was not impressed, but the album has grown on me a lot, and hopefully will continue to....As a follow-up to "Fables' however, it is lacking...."Fables" sounded like a focused, locked-in band, hinting at their potential....and in many ways, reflects Kathryn Calder's leadership and musicianship....Is it only me, or do Kathryn's main contributions to "Hill' (You Destroyer/And It Was) feel like a natural evolution from Fables, whereas much of "Hill" feels like a step back for Immaculate Machine?? I want to be clear here: I was not expecting a Fables II.....I was expecting an album that would take the strengths of Fables (male-female harmonies, honesty, directness, genuine lyricism) and continue pushing the musical envelope forward....What I got was an album that while good enough on its own, pales in comparison to not only IM's past works, but also doesn't deliver on the promises of Fables!

    3) Brooke Gallupe is better suited, in my opinion, to providing background vocals, and it took me a while to get used to him being up front and centre....However, "Thank Me Later", "He's A Biter" and "I Know It's Not As Easy" are all solid tunes, which rank up there with Immaculate Machine's best work.

Well, I've listened to "High On Jackson Hill" about 8 times, and I must say that it's definately a grower....Here are some of my thoughts on the album: 1) Kathryn Calder is probably one of my favourite female vocalists! Her contributions and leadership are all over "You Destroyer", which is my favourite track on the album...The song manages to be so direct, honest, and moving....Ever time the words "Standing on the track, looking to meet your match" are uttered, I get shivers! 2) Another moment I get shivers is when Katheryn comes in, midway through "And It Was" to take over lead vocal duty! The song is so sad, but it's also beautiful.....It sounds like a farewell song to Kathryn Calder, and her contributions to the band ("We fought like we know it would soon be over, and it was it was it was it was it was") and I really hope that is not the case, because she is the heart of this band, and is the reason why I love them!!

Sadly I have to agree with the naysayers on this one: I like their old stuff better than their new stuff.
