  • (2009 - October) A revolution backwards

    Nov 7 2009, 15h20 por empii

So this then is my first journal at last.fm and I guess it will end up in a linguistic disaster, but nevertheless:

What I do experience at the moment is something like a revolution backwards, back to my musical roots when I started to listen to heavier music. For quite a long while now I am listening to Heavy Metal. Bands like Iced Earth, Blind Guardian or Metallica were the big profiteers, ending up in an absolutely dominant lead for Iced Earth in my overall charts.

What many don't know is, that the first "heavier" bands I listened to in the past were Nightwish and especially Evanescence. While my interest in both of them (and any other sort of female-fronted metal) has dropped in that Heavy-Metal-period, now it seems to come back. I nearly lost any sort of interest in Iced Earth actually and I don't really want to listen to any sort of Heavy/Thrash or Death-Metal at the moment at all.

That really is a surprise, as I just some months ago expected to see even more dominant Metal bands in the lead at my charts.

I think that has to do with the atmosphere of autumn, which really has arrived completely now, but somehow it could also mean something like a true revolution - just backwards. We'll see which bands will take the sceptre and crown now. Iced Earth is miles ahead of everybody else and nearly all Top-5 pursuers are not part of that "revolution"-Bands aswell, but who knows? Epica made up magnificent +400 plays in just three weeks, so did Stream of Passion which seem to come out of nowhere to conquer the Top 10 now. And still a big surprise is Amaran, which are to find in the Top-20 for a long time now, but only have released two albums before they split.

That might get really exciting in the future. I'm looking forward to the Novemer 2009 journal, if there are any changes to report :).

Greetings and have a nice November

  • 50 Questions about your Top 50

    Out 31 2009, 9h13 por Atheistic_Scum

    1. How did you get into 29? Nightwish

Randomly went into JB HiFi one day and bought Century Child based solely on the reputation of the band. Not their best work, but got me into them.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? Stream of Passion

    Probably TocarPassion.

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33? Draconian

    From TocarWhen I Wake:

    What have you done?
    Reveal your heart
    Your suffocating silence
    Tears me apart

    So break this seal
    Where the quiet remains;
    Where lovers mourn
    Broken and torn

    4. What is your favorite album by 49? Dimmu Borgir

    Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? Dark Tranquillity

    9, not counting EPs:

    The Gallery
    The Mind's I
    Projector
    Haven
Skydancer / Of Chaos and eternal Night
    Damage Done
Exposures - In Retrospect and Denial
    Character
    Fiction

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? Porcupine Tree

Probably Wedding Nails. Gotta love a good instrumental track.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? Soilwork

Departure Plan. It reminds me of someone.

    8. What is your favorite album by 15? After Forever

Can't go past Invisible Circles. Cheese, but good cheese.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? Madder Mortem

Tough call. Such an underrated band. I'll go with TocarFaceless for its pure awesomeness.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? Arch Enemy

TocarThe Immortal. Not a happy song, but brings out the happy in me. Oh, and not the fucked-up Angela version, but the original Johan version. Angela should stick to her own songs and leave the Johan era well alone.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? Faithful Darkness

I only know one: In Shadows lies Utopia. Very cool and unintentionally amusing at times too.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? Moonspell

Faaark. How to choose? There are so many, but I'll go with TocarIn and Above Men for pure power.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? Demons & Wizards

Nothing really specific, it's just a great mash of Iced Earth and Blind Guardian.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? Iron Maiden

Another tough call. TocarRun to the Hills if I really had to choose only one.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? Bloodbath

TocarEaten puts a big ole smile on my face.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? Hearse

Never. I wish they'd come to Australia, but I'd say there's a snowball's chance in hell of that.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? The Gathering

TocarLiberty Bell. Heard it on some soundtrack and was enough to get me into them.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? Scar Symmetry

    Holographic Universe. Catchy as syphilis.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1? Iced Earth

Matt Barlow, but an honourable mention to Jon Schaffer who is one of the best songwriters ever.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? Lacuna Coil

    Nope.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? Blind Guardian

Listening to the Fly EP during a uni class instead of, you know, working.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? Dream Theater

So many to choose from. I'd go for TocarFinally Free, for the awesome performances and storytelling involved.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? System of a Down

TocarChop Suey! Just like the rest of Australia.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? Autumn

Altitude. Something about Marjan Welman just does it for me.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? Warrel Dane

TocarWhen We Pray for the truth and conviction contained within the lyrics, not to mention Warrel's performance.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? Diablo Swing Orchestra

I think it was TocarPoetic Pitbull Revolutions. Such a funny band.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? Nevermore

Hell of a tough call, so many fantastic albums. If I really had to choose, I'd go with Dead Heart In A Dead World, but it would be a close run thing.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? Opeth

*pulls hair out* How can I choose? OK how about TocarSerenity Painted Death. Probably change my mind two minutes from now , though.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? Primal Fear

    TocarAngel in Black, I think.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8? Katatonia

I'd have to go with TocarJuly, although there are so many great tracks.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? Faith No More

Again, never. They're doing shows here next year, but the shows sold out in 7 minutes, so I guess I won't be seeing them then.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? Tristania

Not really a happy kind of band, but TocarDestination Departure would be the closest they get to conjuring feelings of happiness in me.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12? Rammstein
    Sehnsucht, hands down.

    34. What is the worst song by 45? The Haunted

Anything from the last two albums.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? Fear Factory

    TocarEdgecrusher. Still love it.

    36. What is your favorite album by 48? Nemesea

Mana. The other album is beneath consideration.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? Sonata Arctica

    Hmmm, that'd be.............. never. Sigh.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? Borknagar

Inherit the Earth is a fantastic song, hard to go past it.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? In Mourning

Probably the first track off of their only album: TocarThe Shrouded Divine.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? Ayreon

The Human Equation, definitely. So many great singers and great storytelling.

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? Bruce Dickinson

    TocarBook Of Thel. Love it.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41? Black Sabbath

    Paranoid, of course.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24? Apocalyptica

Of their original songs, I would go for TocarGrace.

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? Sevendust

Loved these guys when I was at school. Best moment was probably from listening to Live Again for the first time.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35? Rob Zombie

    TocarDragula. Bitchin'.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? Metallica

Only one? How about The Thing That Should Not Be.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4? Epica

Tough call, but I'll pick The Classical Conspiracy for the sheer range of songs as well as the orchestral components. Oh, and the performance of Living a Lie is a definite highlight.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37? Jeff Loomis

    Jeff Loomis. Der.

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? Machine Head

Desire to Fire. I've come a looong way since then, and so have they.

    50. How many albums do you own by 20? Tool

    Five:

    Opiate
    Undertow
    Ænima
    Lateralus
    10,000 Days

  • 25 favorite songs

    Out 24 2009, 12h48 por melez102

Decided that I want to write a journal, so I made it as random as 25 favorite songs
Also, I am not a critic, thus I will point out only the good things in these songs and the way they struck me.
Let's start with it.. From the end.

    25. Isis - TocarWrists of Kings - I deem post metal as progressive metal. Especially Isis' post-metal. This song defines it clearly, the post-rock, progressive rock influences make Isis the unique band that they are. Great song.

    24. Mark Sandman - Patience - Getting used to Morphine's dark moody tunes, this song amazed me on how actually bright and positive sounding it is. A different tune with a similar sound, cool isn't it?

    23. Peach - TocarYou Lied - So, so catchy. Heard it via Tool's cover but liked the original version much better. Spent one whole day listening to it, then lost interest. It amused me enough though. :d

    22. Swans - TocarBeautiful Child - Simply great. Haven't listened to Swans a lot, and when I hear this song I have a feeling I'm missing a lot. Gotta stop being lazy and actually get more of their stuff.

    21. Portishead - TocarElysium - Favorite Portishead track for sure. Didn't pay a lot of attention to it earlier but when it got to my ears I repeated it and repeated it and repeated. Amazes me with the scary vocals lol.

    20. Unexpect - TocarSummoning Scenes - Haven't been a fan of Unexpect's mix of high experimentation and black metal, but this is a track that just jumps out of nowhere. Excellent.

    19. Nihilist Spasm Band - I Have Nothing to Say - Free Improvisation at it's finest imo. I love these guys.

    18. Iced Earth - TocarA Question of Heaven - Just for the record, I hate power metal. Power metal and epic stories, and the way they are presented are everything I despise. Iced Earth is the only power metal band which knows some limits to decency, and isn't loserish like 99% of power metal bands. Excellent album and excellent song.

17.Voivod - TocarAngel Rat - I don't think I will never know why this band is so, so underrated. Angel Rat is one of my favorite albums, holds really fresh songs. The whole band is not that progressive (even though it has elements of prog-rock), but that's what you get for trying to mix trash metal with prog... you get forgotten.

    16. Boris - TocarPink - Still haven't listened to anything but the album Pink, but what I heard, I love. Pink is a great track. I think I would love his drone stuff as well, just to find a chance to listen to it

    15. Animal Collective - Peacebone - It's the first song I've heard of them and immediately got me into them. I deem only a few bands to be really psychedelic, this is one of them.

    14. Frank Zappa - TocarPeaches En Regalia - This song made me love Frank Zappa and probably left me with a kid or two of his. I have only Hot Rats, do want to get more stuff, so suggest me an album or two out of a million he made.

    13. Meshuggah - Stengah - Love the technical complexity of this, or any other Meshuggah songs for that matter. And overall lyrics on Nothing are some of the best I've heard. This song partially define how awesome they actually are.

    12. Tool - TocarThird Eye - Definitely their best song (along with Jambi and both Wings songs). Aenima is not their best album, but holds some pretty unique structured songs (as Aenima and Third Eye). A truly epic song, I don't have much to say about it. Oh, and Tool is prog you rebel idiot!

    11. maudlin of the Well - Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, the Revisitation of the… - Dreamy. Not sure why maudlin is getting classed as avant-garde metal though, most of their stuff is avant-gardeish... post rock? Great either way.

    10. Opeth - TocarGhost of Perdition - Another epic epic song. The change in time signatures and vocal styles is amazing and fits perfectly (saying that because they have songs where it seems completely forced and annoying). Without a doubt their most proggy song. Oh, and ballads don't necessarily mean progressive you rebel idiot!

    9. Gentle Giant - TocarPlain Truth - A true art rocky masterpiece. Great musical harmony and very catchy.

    8. Menomena - Weird - As much as certain indie rock bands are everything I despise, I love Menomena! Can't call it a lot experimental, but there is a certain difference from other indie rock bands. Weird is a song which defines their sound greatly. Amazing sounding.

    7. Magma - Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh (Retrospektïw 2) - It's a live performance, right? Whatever, I deem all of the 40+ minutes of this track epic. It's practically the MDK album live just in a slightly newer version. I would explain this track more detailed but it has far too many changes in it so you're better off reading a professional review of MDK. Epic track either way.

    6. Ruins - TocarGrubandgo - Think this is the first thing I heard from them. Definitely was worth the mention, these guys have a really unique math rockish/zeuhlish/prog-rockish/avant-gardeish sound. This is perhaps their most catchy song, but that's not the only reason why I like it.

    5. The Residents - Part One: Edweena - Now that I mentioned The Residents before, why not again. I can't really choose just one Residents song off of Not Available that I love, I love them equally, really. That is one album I can listen to anytime. This song (and album) is the definition of psychedelic-ness and experimentation.

    4. Yes - Siberian Khatru - As much as I dislike most of Yes's stuff, Close To The Edge is a brilliant, brilliant album. There is not one minute of it to be boring, very immersive. Siberian Khatru is the highest Close To The Edge, and overall Yes gets. Filled with so much energy, senseless lyrics and catchy tunes is what makes this album so good.

    3. Amon Düül II - Soap Shop Rock - I don't know how to explain this song really. It's a progressive rock song that is really psychedelic (as in, The Residents psychedelic). I just wonder why isn't it listened more, it's surely one of the best prog-rock songs I've heard. Amazing band.

    2. King Crimson - Lizard - If you don't like King Crimson's Lizard album, guess what; screw you, you rebel idiot! Sure it's not filled with energy and harsh instrumental musicianship like the past albums, but that is exactly why King Crimson is a unique band. They changed band personnel like socks, and with new people come new influences, new sounds. Lizard is much more jazz-fusion oriented, and most of the people didn't like it at first, as they were used to their old formula but this is the album where King Crimson started to evolve. It was the first KC album I actually listened to, and definitely my favorite KC album, not sure why though.

1.Morphine - TocarThe Night - And last but not least, Morphine's masterpiece album and song called The Night. Most of the Morphine lovers will agree with me on this, that The Night is their best song they've released. Having many elements from their older albums they've expanded it with more instrumentation (including a cello, a piano and such), getting farther from their alternative jazz-rocky style and scratching the surface of neoclassicism. The piano in this song works greatly as it sets the mood just like the sax did in their older albums.

Give those a listen, definitely worth it. Especially for someone who has any interest in any form of progressiveness or experimentation.

  • The ' Odyssey Desaster '

    Out 19 2009, 15h09 por goldione

These bands and projects share the name "Odyssey" (so far known at Last.fm)

    1. an U.S. billboard charts scored dance act from New York - formed as "the Lopez Sisters" (Carmen, Lillian, and Louise) in 1968 ... Going Back To My Roots TocarNative New Yorker Inside Out
    2. a Swedish progressive metal band (search: http://www.metal-archives.com/ )
    3. an U.S. psychedelic rock group, see Setting Forth of 1969
    4. a German eurodance project, see Talk to Me
    5. a Greek project name used by Vangelis
    6. the artist name of an U.S. drum & bass producer, see Expressions
    7. the later name for the band Oracle
    8. an U.S. Motown album by a pop group from 1972, Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love and Battened Ships , see: Odyssey album.
    9. the solo group of Iced Earth's drummer Brent Smedley
    10. a Polish electronica/ambient project by Tomasz Pauszek (also known as RND).
    11. a Brazilian hardcore band (search: http://www.metal-archives.com/ )
    12. a Romanian folk-rock band ( http://www.trupa-odyssey.ro )
    13. a Pakistan progressive metal band (search: http://www.metal-archives.com/ )

I will never understand why bands don't look into music history before they claim a name - BUT - even back in 60s and 70s they didn't care - when those THREE U.S. projects ( the "Progressive" one from 1968, the "Motown" one from 1972, the "disco act" from mid-seventies) did start this whole confusion -
they finally did cause to a future internet service by the name of last.fm... ;-)

At least METAL-related groups did later overkill-use this group name, search http://www.metal-archives.com/ for ~16 (=SIXTEEN) metal-related groups and projects, luckily not all of those did release records.
