  • Globaltica 2009 World Culture Festival - dzień pierwszy

Nie zabrakło też starych piosenek, odświeżone, mocniejsze wersje “Dancers At the End of Time” i “Calling a Lightning Pt.2″ wprawiły mnie w prawdziwy zachwyt.

Wspomagali go muzycy z Rosji, a mianowicie skrzypaczka, kontrabasista i perkusista. On ją po prostu sterował.

Thurstonem Moore’m (Sonic Youth) i Omarem Rodriguez-Lopezem (At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta), wraz ze swoim zespołem Big Sexy Noise dała przepełnione grobowym sarkazmem show. Połączenie brudnych, punkowych gitar z saksofonem i niskim wokalem Lunch dawało momentami piorunujący efekt.

  • Noise, folk and pies: A sullen misanthrope’s guide to The Green Man Festival 2008

    Ago 18 2008, 23h02 por Nesmasis

This weekend I visited the charming Glanusk Park, which is somewhere in Wales, for the 6th annual The Green Man Festival. It was a weekend of many firsts. It was my first visit to Wales. It was my first, hopefully of many, visit to The Green Man Festival. It was the first time I went to a music festival because of the music, not because of the people who were going as well. It was the first time I went to a festival in cowboy boots, a mistake never to be repeated. It was the first time I went camping without a sleeping bag, not too big a mistake, but daft none-the-less. But, most important of all, it was the first festival I went to on my own.

I believe this to be a fair enough statement, but, had I gone to any other festival than Green Man without mates, I would have spent most of my time on my own. However, I try not to sound like the shit-spouting idiots I came across (more on those in a bit), but it is far more relaxed than Reading Weekend Festival. I think the fact that the number of tickets sold is capped at ten thousand is one of the reasons the entire place had a much more intimate feel. Also, Glanusk Park is beautiful. The scenery that surrounds the park is stunning and truly wonderful to look at. I spent most of my first hours wandering around taking it all in. Furthermore, the fact that, it seems, the majority of those ten thousand were made up by families really eased the mood. The amount of children running around, blowing bubbles, falling in the mud, running into each other etc; was astounding. This lead to two rather enjoyable things you rarely get at other festivals:

    • The look on kids faces. You know the look of wonderment that kids get when the see something new and they appear mind-boggled. Well, most of the younger children looked like that most of time. The amount of kids who pulled on my beard/hair/hat was rather large.
    • Some rather odd situations. A large group of children were dancing far better than their drug-idled adult counterparts, especially when Spiritualized were playing. I think the sight of about 30 children dancing to the lyrics ‘Good dope, good fun’ will never be able to be that endearing again.

This also goes hand in hand with those on the opposite end of the age scale. The oldest guy I met was an eighty-four year old called Pete, who delighted in telling anyone of any age, gender, creed, colour and sexual orientation, whether or not they were willing to listen, ‘I’m 84, you know’ in the thickest of thick Brummie accents whilst also wearing a tie-dye shirt that reeked of the green. He must have been the oldest hippie in the world, and, with no word of a lie, one of the most pleasant, and active, people I’ve ever met. All of this adds up to a really laid back atmosphere that only the hardest of hearts could dislike. Well, now that I’ve mentioned it…

    Bizarrely, or more accurate, quite naively of me, I thought that, because of the playlist not being, in my opinion, your standard festival pile-of-piss, the number of tossers in attendance would be quite small, due to people having a taste I can agree with. Indeed, I did meet some genuinely stunning people with superb taste and, whilst queuing to get in on Thursday, had a discussion with someone about which Howlin Rain album was better. This shit doesn’t happen to me that often. However, this didn’t stop the tossers from turning up in full force. I cannot begin to count up the number of times I heard the following conversations, or variations thereof;

‘So what do you do when you’re not attending festivals then?’
    ‘Oh, I work in advertising’

    I swear, every fucking annoying twat who I had the inconvenience of over-hearing was an advertising executive. I am also fairly certain I am not exaggerating. In the slightest. But it gets worse, as most of these conversations continued;

‘Oh, I/my partner works in advertising’

At this point, I really wanted to kick everyone of them in their smug faces, hard. However, this did lead to one stunning conversation in which it turns out the two women in two adjacent-sitting couples present work at rival companies, and one of these companies had recently won a bid over the other. The stony silence that following was so entertaining, I couldn’t stop laughing my balls off, which, as well you should imagine, garnered me some strange looks. The most annoying of all this though was the fact that all of them, again, no exaggeration involved, came from the same part of London, obviously the part where wanker fucking ad execs congregate. It was as if someone with rather large hands, I’m looking at you Buddha, had mass-transported all of the cunts from the capital and stuck them in that field. They would bang on about the quality of this restaurant or how quaint this particular café was, and they’d all fucking agree with each other like sheep. ‘FUCKING STAY AT HOME THEN’ was the only thought that kept me sane.

And the fucking bullshit reasons they came up with as to why they were there. ‘This is the only festival we would bring our little Percival as it’s ever so green and that’s an attitude we like to instil in him.’ IS. IT. BOLLOCKS. First off, though the place is a bit annoyingly hippie-spiritual-ish in its way, and it did have and impressive eco-stage mainly for open-mic performances, it, in no way, was green. They had an almost infinite amount of light-bulbs on so campers could see where they were camping when it got dark and the energy just to play music, cook food etcetera for ten thousand fuckwits like them can not be small. And second, the reason you actually came was because all children under the age of eleven get in free, which means you don’t have to fork over more money for your terrorizing, pretentiously-named little shits. That, I can be certain, is the only reason those people were there.

As you may have guessed, this meant I spent most of my time annoyed. But, that was bound to happen to me when I’m in a group of people that has more than, say, ten people in it, let alone ten thousand.

    But anyway, the reason I went there, the music. For those of you interested, and still with me, these are the bands I saw, with asterisks denoting fairly superb bands;

    Friday:
    Cats In Paris
    David A. Jaycock
    Mugstar **
    Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir ***
    One Little Plane **
    Sennen **
    The War on Drugs **
    O’Death
    Fuck Buttons
    King Creosote
    Lou Rhodes **
    Black Mountain *****
    Spiritaulized *****

    Saturday:
    The Saffron Sect **
The Swanton Bombs (who were, it has to be said, undeniably shit)
    The Drift Collective **
    The Yellow Moon Band
    North Sea Radio Orchestra
    Emmy the Great **
Howlin Rain ***** (which lead to a stunning unique occurrence in which the name of the band described the weather conditions within which they were watched)
    Richard Thompson
    Badly Drawn Boy

    Sunday:
    Cymbient **
    Radio Luxembourg
    Bowerbirds ***
    Simone White
Los Campesinos! (who I left half-way through their first song. Seriously awful.)
    Laura Marling
Damien Jurado ** (The second best thing to come out of Seattle)
The Peth (Rhys Ifans fronted Super Furry Animals side project who weren’t as crap as I thought they might be, but, if they’d started in say, ’92, their Brit-Pop ways would have been more enjoyable)
Nina Nastasia ** (who, it also has to be said, has a stunning arse)
    Pentangle **********

I can’t really review the last one with just a series of asterisks. I knew that Pentangle were important to the folk world, but, as I was informed soon after their set, kind-of are Godfathers of the folk world. The British bit at least. In the late sixties, their fusion of folk and jazz paved the way for what is known as British Folk rock. And this was their only festival stop on a 12 date tour with the original five members since 1973. But it wasn’t just this that was so impressive about them. It was the fact that five people aged between 64 and 71 can still be that good. And they really were just as good as they used to be sounding as good as their live recordings. Unlike recent reunion tours of bands that are getting on a bit now, where it is always painfully obvious that they can’t perform like they once did, Pentangles’ minds and bodies haven’t be savaged by retarded over-use of drugs, and it showed. A group of blokes I spoke to, when I commented on this, said they were on top form, and were, note for note, faultless. Also, they (Pentangle) were charmingly old. They’d forget the order they were going to play songs, and when they experienced the odd bit of feedback, Jacqui McShee covered her ears because ‘they weren’t what the use to be’. When this caused a hold-up in proceedings, and one drunken twat shouted at them to get on with it, the amount of abuse that guy got from the crowd was horrendous, but well deserved. It also allowed Bert Jansch to get a laugh when he said rather of matter-of-factly ‘I do believe you’ve been told, young sir’. Pentangle themselves, are a perfect personification of the whole event; gentle, relaxed and a little bit hippie-ish. Yet, at their age, still have what it takes to knock seven bells of shit out of a stack of modern NME pish, just like the Godfathers of folk should be able to. Also, a world in which Danny Thompson can kick that much arse on a double-bass and not be legendary is not a world in which I wish to live.

So, some of the kick arse things that occured that I can remember in, suprise suprise, a list:
    Pieminister Pies
Being the only person to cheer in a fully-rammed Folky Dokey tent when Emmy The Great read out that Hull had won against Fulham
And the same for the West Ham results
Mistakenly thinking a group of 18-20 year old lasses were about 14-16, and then felt odd when I found them attractive.
Singing Reeves and Mortimer far too loud with two nutters
Meeting Black Mountain and chatting with the bassist about Elvis Costello.
Having little Jake on my shoulders for Black Mountain
Realizing the people who I get on with best are usually aged between 30 and 45
The amount of attractive young ladies, and bands with Chellos/double-basses, especially the ones with attractive ladies playing Chellos/double-basses, were so high as to amaze.
Finding Addelstones cider isn’t as naff as I remember
All the new bands I now have to try and get ahold of some of their stuff.
Oh, and Pieminister Pies. Those were some seriously, seriously bitchin' pies

But, one of the best bits of all of the weekend, were the genuinely and wholly wonderful people who allowed me to bother them and their weekend. Thank’s must go to, even though most of them won’t read this; James, Ben, their respective partners, whose names, unfortunately, escape my memory, Mark, and little Roman who can make standing in the torrential rain for 3-and-abit hours so entertaining with just a flute, a guitar, a harmonica and a tambourine and free wine, the two pissed Wigonains who I spent at least an hour singing Reeves And Mortimer songs with at three o’clock in the morning round the fire, Old Pete, He’s eight-four you know, three month old Jake who’s persistent interest in my Russian-style, dog-ear-flapped hat never got annoying, Stephan and Ceri for having girl’s names, more free alcohol and disturbingly similar minds, Luke, Anna, Karen and little James for the free tea, bananas and rusks almost every morning, Mike and John, who spent a large proportion of their time belittling ‘the youth’ whilst simultaneously trying to pull the female members of it, the mid-thirties/forties guys who bought me a pint after a long chat on the virtues of Spacemen 3 vs. Spiritualized and all the other fuck-ups, drop-outs, dead-beat hippies and failures who I drank, ate, pissed, shouted, danced, fell-over, belittled others and generally fucked about with. I also must thank Mr. Falconer for putting me onto the festival, it's just yet another in a long line of damn fine suggestions. Oh, and the very lovely Rachel, for, ahem, undisclosed reasons…

But, the most redeeming occurrence of all was meeting a proper legend of a bloke called Steve, who gave me a informative/witty 2 hour ‘lecture’ on Pentangle, life, the universe and everything as well as let me partake in the smoking of ‘illegals’ as he refers to them. All of which he did before I enquired as to what he does for a living, where he promptly informed me he was an advertising executive. From London. The fucker...

Oh, and I am definitely going next year. On my own, obviously…

Wow. This took an eternity to do! I skipped a few where I didn't have that number on my chart and just subbed other numbers in other places. Blah...blah...blah...

    1. How did you get into 31?
    Melvins
There really isn't any neat story behind it or anything...just one of those bands you read about, see merch for or whatever and end up checking out.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
There is no 22! It looks like the closest is Beastie Boys at 21. The first song with them would have been TocarGirls, courtesy of an older brother singing it constantly for a while when we were kids.

    3. What's your favourite lyric by 29?
For Gram Parsons, it's "We'll Sweep Out the Ashes in the Morning"
"We're two people caught up in the flame
that has to die out soon
I didn't mean to start this fire and neither did you
So tonight when you hold me tight
we'll let the fire burn on
And we'll sweep out the ashes in the morning"

That whole fire/sex metaphor is just too damned fun.

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
There is no 49! For Eugene McDaniels, I'll go with "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" which was a nice surprise upon first listen.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
    The Sonics
Looks like about six, including some vinyl! :D

    6. What is your favourite song by 50?
There is no 50! For the Dead Milkmen, "TocarI Walk The Thinnest Line" is pretty brilliant but I'm quite fond of "Thing That Only Eats Hippies" for the fun factor.

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
    Wilco
"How to Fight Loneliness" is a pretty big bummer:

    How to fight loneliness?
    Smile all the time
    Shine you teeth 'til meaningless
    And sharpen them with lies
    And whatever's going down
    Will follow you around
    That's how you fight loneliness
    You laugh at every joke
    Drag your blanket blindly
And fill your heart with smoke
And the first thing that you want
Will be the last thing you ever need
    That's how you fight it
    Just smile all the time

    8. What is your favourite song by 15?
No 15! I'll have to redo this some time after I've scrobbled more. Clem Snide is at 14 and I really like a lot of the Clem tunes, "TocarJews for Jesus Blues" and "TocarSomething Beautiful" are definitely up there.

    9. What is your favourite song by 5?
    The Monks
It's tough to pick a single favorite from stuff I really like like this. "TocarMonk Time" is certainly one of the tops.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    Leonard Cohen
Wow. His stuff isn't often terribly happy, but "TocarChelsea Hotel #2" makes me smile. It's the sweetest song about a blowjob I can think of.

    11. What is your favourite album by 40?
    Butthole Surfers
I'll go with "Locust Abortion Technician" but don't take me too seriously on it, I haven't listened to enough of their stuff to seriously pick favorites.

    12. What is your favourite song by 10?
No 10! For Andrew Bird, I'm awfully fond of "Why?" It makes me want to do things to him. ;)

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
No 33! For James Brown, I guess it would be memories of a male friend becoming enamored with "TocarSex Machine" which makes me giggle because the friend is a funny guy and that's not even close to being Brown's best song.

    14. What is your favourite song by 37?
    Jonathan Richman
He's such a fun guy. Of course it's hard to pick a single tune, but I'll select "TocarParties in the U.S.A." for today.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
No 19! We'll go with The Cure. While it's not the most artistically significant song they've got, "TocarJust Like Heaven" is spectacu-fucking-happy-tastic! That opening keys bit and the "SHOW ME, SHOW ME, SHOW ME..." swell my heart every time and it's nearly impossible not to sing along. Okay, now I'm smiling just at the thought of it! :)

    16. How many times have you seen 21 live?
I've seen none of my 21s live (Francoise Hardy, Al Green, Beastie Boys) but back before I went sour on the concept of marriage, I thought it'd be pretty sweet to have Al Green sing at my wedding.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
No 23! And I'm skipping this one because this is taking me far too long.

    18. What is your favourite album by 11?
    Andrew Bird
Armchair Apocrypha but The Mysterious Production of Eggs has a lot going for it too.

    19. Who is a favourite member of 1?
What's my favorite member of Eef Barzelay? Hehehehe...naughty, naughty.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    I've seen Jeff Tweedy twice.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45?
No 45...skipping...takes too long...blah blah blah.

    22. What is your favourite song by 16?
No 16! Curtis Mayfield is nearby and I'll be damned if that TocarPusherman song isn't one of the coolest tunes ever.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
    No 47...blah, blah, blah.

    24. What is your favourite album by 26?
    No 26...blah, blah, blah.

    25. What is your favourite song by 18?
    Blah...blah...blah...

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
    Comets on Fire
    Probably "Pussy Foot the Duke"

    27. What is your favourite lyric by 3?
    Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
I love his shit. He's my secret boyfriend...shhhh.
This bit is always hung in my head:
"today was one where, lost in thought
    I really feel I am
losing not an ounce of what
you see in me, my lamb
    "

    28. What is your favourite song by 2?
    Reigning Sound
Oh my, there are a lot of them. "TocarWhat Could I Do?" is one of them.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    The Astronauts
    Probably "Baja"

    30. What is your favourite song by 8?
    Oh man, Pavement.
I think just about anything Malkmus touches is golden, but I'll just go with the "Killing Moon" cover here because I'm always a little apprehensive about covers but I think it's a quite good one.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    Devo
Zero, and I imagine it wouldn't be nearly as interesting now as it might have been in the past.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
    No 44.

    33. What is you favourite album by 12?
    Oblivians
I listen to "Popular Favorites" a lot because it has "TocarBad Man" on it and I do lurve it so. That Greg sure knows how to sing a ditty.

    34. What is the worst song by 34?
No 34! Sweet! That means I don't have to pick a "worst!"

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 46?
    Howlin Rain
Probably "Dancer At The End of Time"

    36. What is you favourite album by 42?
    blah...blah...blah...no

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
No 39, and I haven't seen anyone near that on the list live.

    38. What is your favourite album by 36?
    Yowza, Yo La Tengo
They've only got like 500 albums and all.
    It's probably "Fakebook"

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
    The Amps
"Tipp City" because it ended up on a really long VHS of music videos we taped off of the telly many years ago.

    40. What is your favourite album by 7?
    Meat Puppets
II, of course. But I do really like the new one, "Rise To Your Knees"

  • mix for Winter 2008

    Mar 30 2008, 20h02 por madeofclay

At some points, I have made a mix each month - last year was an example of that. But in others I have made a mix each season, basically every 3 months. This time I was sort of forced into it, as I did not have a working CD burner.
What has come about because of the long time between mix making (the last one was in November) is a bit more of a refined disc. Not by much really - there are still oddities, no theme really, and it is just a collection of tracks from the radio, friends, blogs, soulseek, and many other sources. But it seems to have a bit more of a consistent flavor compared with my last few. It is fairly laid back, which is surprising considering the sort of semester this has been. Or perhaps not, come to think of it.
So, here is what it is:

    1. Yeasayer - 2080
    2. The Flaming Lips - Be My Head
    3. The Mountain Goats - Autoclave
    4. Pulp - I Love Life
    5. Patrick Wolf - Bluebells
    6. Lisa Germano - Paper Doll
    7. Ringo Deathstarr - Sweet Girl
    8. The Honeydrips - Fall From a Height
    9. Young Galaxy - Outside the City
    10. Stars of the Lid - Slight on the Childproof
    11. David Crosby - Laughing
    12. Howlin Rain - Nomads
    13. Beck - Go Easy
    14. Wilco - Thirteen
    15. Rosie and Me - You're Laughing at Me
    16. Goldfrapp - A&E
    17. The Six Parts Seven - Stolen Moments
    18. Lewis & Clarke - Before It Breaks You

  • An extensive list of 2008 forthcoming releases!

    Jan 29 2008, 18h47 por richtaylor521

Since I still need to scribe some write-ups for some of the albums on my best of ‘07 list, I figured I’d post this.

Question marks (?) indicate artists that have stated they’re writing new material, but an ‘08 release is not definite; although, at an educated guess- I’d say an ‘08 release is likely.

Bold font are albums I’m looking forward to. Bold font plus red are albums I’m really looking forward to.

If there’s any mistakes please let me know. Feel free to post releases I’ve missed, also.
