Sun 1 Mar – Communion at Notting Hill Arts Club

This gig was amazing. I hadn't heard of a single band before I turned up, yet they were all at least good and in several cases exceptional. This sort of thing does not happen often, but it will keep me going to gigs looking for something to top it for a while...

We arrived sadly too late to hear more than one song by ANDREW BALKWILL, but his solo piano music set the bar for the evening quite high. It was very jazzy, maybe a bit Ben Folds-ish, a bit like Julie McKee (see review from last year). Whatever it was, it was good.

Second band House Of Brothers were alright for a few songs, very american feeling rock (I mean traditional bluesy american, not the Foo Fighters or whatever) with an incongrously english accented singer. Unfortunately after a while I didn't really feel like there was any massive variety or innovation, and rather lost interest in the set. But as always, just because I wasn't a fan doesn't mean that you (hypothetical reader) won't be.

There isn't too much to say about this compilation; I bought it as part of Big Scary Monsters 'Class of 2007' package a few weeks back and meant to blog about it then - but never got around to it. Upon seeing the release, I didn't quite know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised; it features quite a varied range of music, which probably means there'd be something for everyone.

His stirring songwriting ability and utterly unique and haunting vocal style have won many fans over. Melancholic doesn't even begin to describe the depth of emotion that is deeply felt by both the artist and listener in each of his songs. Last year's The Complete Guide to Insufficiency is comparable to Joanna Newsom's Ys in terms of its musical value. Make sure you come along to see his first London headline show for many months!
