Voy a repartir culpas a quienes me hayan hecho oír tales discos.

    A Camp - Colonia
Destacados: Stronger Than Jesus (gran elección para sencillo), Golden Teeth and Silver Medals (gran dueto) y The Weed Had Got There First (gran cierre. Magistral).

A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head
Destacados: In Your Heart (para bailar y molerse a pata a la vez), Exploding Head y I Lived My Life to Stand in the Shadow of Your Heart.

Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light

Segunda ñapa: ReWolf (a continuación). Destacados: Layers, Sing Tomorrow's Praise, Gliss (me la quedaron debiendo en vivo), Me and Mary…
    Rewolf

    Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone!
Destacados: Watch This!, The Greater Than Symbol and The Hash, 1993.

Yo me inscribiría). Destacados: A Love Economy, Flight Recorder, Tinto.

Depeche Mode - Sounds Of The Universe
Destacados: Hole To Feed, Peace, Jezebel.

    Eels - Hombre Lobo
Destacados: The Look You Give That Guy (el himno de todo jilted lover en el planeta), In My Dreams, Tremendous Dynamite, The Longing, Fresh Blood, What's A Fella Gotta Do (si, todas estas). Ñapa:
    The MySpace Transmissions

Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
Destacados: Turn It On y Katherine, Kiss Me.

    Gustavo Cerati - Fuerza Natural

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly

Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum

Destacados: Bait & Switch, Me & My Gun.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults - Letting Up Despite Great Faults

    Lord Cut-Glass - Lord Cut-Glass
Discazo, dis-ca-zo. Destacados: Look After Your Wife, Big Time Teddy, Even Jesus Couldn't Love You.

Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything To Nothing
Destacados: Todas y cada una, pero especialmente I've got Friends, Everything to Nothing y The River. Ñapa:
    The MySpace Transmissions

Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers
Destacadas: Peeled Apples (vaya forma de abrir), Journal For Plague Lovers, Marlon J.D. y Williams Last Words.

    Metric - Fantasies
Destacadas: Sick Muse, Gimme Sympathy (y Sick Muse. Impresionante canción).

Modest Mouse - No One's First and You're Next
Destacadas: The Whale Song, I've Got It All (Most).

    Morrissey - Years of Refusal

    Muse - The Resistance
Seguramente. Destacadas: I Belong To You [+Mon Cœur S'ouvre à ta Voix] y Undisclosed Desires.

Natalia Lafourcade - Hu Hu Hu

    Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Indispensable. Destacadas: Lisztomania, 1901, Lasso, Rome, Armistice.

Placebo - Battle For The Sun

Puscifer - "C" Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference Here) E.P.
Esperar a ver qué pasa. Destacadas: Polar Bear, The Mission (con Milla Jovović)

Destacadas: The Royal We, Growing Old Is Getting Old, Panic Switch, Sort Of, y de nuevo Panic Switch (brutal).

    Sonic Youth - The Eternal
Destacadas: Anti-Orgasm, Poison Arrow, Malibu Gas Station.

Stereophonics - Keep Calm & Carry On

The Black Heart Procession - Six
Destacados: Todas.

The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

    The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Destacadas: Convinced of the Hex, Silver Trembling Hands, Evil y en loop malsano Powerless.

    The Lonely Island - Incredibad

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Destacadas: This Love Is Fucking Right, Everything With You.

The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage

The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Destacadas: Omen, Run With The Wolves, Piranha.

The Twilight Sad - Forget The Night Ahead
Desesperanzado, tal vez, sutilmente oscuro, doloroso… no sunshine lollipops and flowers in here.

Destacadas: Sunce, Magnet, Bambita.

We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls
Destacadas: It's Thunder and It's Lightning, Moving Clocks Run Slow, Keeping Warm.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
Destacadas: Heads Will Roll, Skeletons.

    Recopilaciones

    Xiu Xiu/Parenthetical Girls - Morrissey/The Smiths split

The Flaming Lips & Stardeath And White Dwarfs - The Dark Side of the Moon
Destacadas: The Great Gig in the Sky, Money (por fin una versión de money que no es aburridísima), Us And Them (hermosa) y Brain Damage.

    Super Champetas 2009
  • Best / Favorite Releases of 2009

    Dez 23 2009, 13h17 por breatheH20

In the midst of being bored out of my skull, I decided to compile a list of the best releases of 2009 (in my opinion); the list will consist of an initial ranking of albums that were released this year, while the other will compile albums that were released previously, but played a significant role in my listening habits in the year of 2009.

It would be a bit difficult to explain exactly why I chose the positions I did for each album, but I will try to summarize my reasons briefly under each item. [Note: This is not the end all be all list that shits on you and your listening habits; this is for mere fun, discussion, and totally subject to my bias. After all, it is my music taste. But I'm sure some people would feel these albums were great for the year.]

A combination of plays, enjoyment, new faces, comparison to back catalog, and other factors went into consideration regarding the rankings on both lists. So, here we go... from the bottom to the top..

    Best Releases of 2009

    #9 - Muse - The Resistance

Selected Tracks: Resistance, United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage), Guiding Light

I'll probably get burned for this considering how Muse fans behave on last.fm, but I'm putting "The Resistance" by Muse at the bottom of this list for a number of reasons, the main one being I haven't given it a proper run through. I thought it was appropriate to acknowledge such a major release, but I don't feel capable of reviewing the album fully. I just got it today.

The album picks up where Muse's previous releases left off: space age rock and opera, bombastic ballads, over-the-top arena jams in the vein of Queen. It's odd because this can be this album's up and downfall. Granted, Muse's brand of prog-rock is amazing in its technicality and lyrical urgency, but at the same time comes across as a caricature of the genre as well. Basically, if you're into that kind of thing, you'll find nothing wrong with it, but I would not recommend this as a gateway to Muse's discography.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with the record; it's very enjoyable. I'm just not surprised that Muse's latest release turned out this way.

    #8 - Asobi Seksu - Hush

Selected Tracks: Layers, Transparence, I Can't See

I had the pleasure of seeing Asobi Seksu early this year, and they are one monster of a band. Oddly enough, I would characterize the band as shy and meek though. It was the first "shoegaze" band I had seen, and the place sounded like an airplane hangar. But enough about the show.

"Hush" (Asobi's 3rd release) picked the quieter side of the fork in the road. Coming off of their successful sophomore effort, these guys have taken more of a Cocteau Twins approach to their songs. The loud, grinding, distorted, signature shoegaze sound has practically disappear on this record, leaving only sweet ballads characterized by subdued vocals, generous reverb, and minimally-decipherable lyrics.

All in all, a solid record that has apparent highs, but tends to linger on the pretty a little too much.

#7 - IAMX - Kingdom of Welcome Addiction

Selected Tracks: Nature of Inviting, You can be happy, The Great Shipwreck Of Life

Mr. Chris Corner (of Sneaker Pimps notoriety) has been making pants wet with his brand electropop for the last five years. All the main ingredients are there: thumping bass, falsetto, ear-drilling synth, brooding introspection, sensuality. His work has been winning over crowds of people across Europe.

"Kingdom of Welcome Addiction" doesn't deviate too much from what he has established. The dire pleading noteworthy in his previous albums still titillates the senses, and the record's "groovability" will make it quite impossible to resist. Mr. Corner also knows his way around a good ballad. The motto is: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Kudos sir!

#6 - Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster

Selected Tracks: TocarBad Romance, TocarDance In The Dark, TocarAlejandro

Pop's newly crowned queen. Gaga has been making noise since 2008; Her talent for infecting her listeners is undeniable, as noted by pop fans and even metalheads. Love her or hate her, the woman's name has left practically everyone's mouth at some point within the last year.

Fashion. Art. Presentation... Oh yeah, and she can actually sing and play instruments. What's not to like. Packed with "guilty-pleasure" tinged eurotrash beats, pop culture references, and sultry vocals, "The Fame Monster" pushes forward with the Gaga phenomenon. The album is accessible, quite possibly it's great asset. The odd thing Gaga seems to have over her contemporaries is her ability to satiate pop-hungry fans (and non-fans) with something filling, rather than just something sweet.

She's what's in. She's what's hot, and it would be foolish to leave her release off of this year's list. The only question is how long will the spotlight shine on Lady Gaga.

    #5 - Sonic Youth - The Eternal

Selected Tracks: Sacred Trickster, Antenna, Massage the History

Noise rock gods Sonic Youth churn out their genius with the latest release "The Eternal"; quite an appropriate title, as they demonstrate their relevance on their 16th album. A tightly knit group this bunch is. Nothing too "outstanding" from this release, but a formidable and great release nonetheless. You wouldn't expect less from Sonic Youth. The group is still in rare form, dissonating and crunching their importance throughout alternative rock even to this day.

    #4 - Silversun Pickups - Swoon

    Selected Tracks
: Panic Switch, It's Nice To Know You Work Alone, Substitution

90's ingenues Silversun Pickups continue their established (or other artist's rather) sound on their sophomore release. Downsides to the album are the seemingly facetiously inserted strings, a lack of Monninger's present vocals, and a repetitive sound that can discern listeners from a proper run through. When it's good, it's good, but the album mostly picks up where Carnavas left off, and truncated some of the better moments on the previous album.

Still, it seems as if the band is still growing, and I will give an A for effort. They're a solid group that's still attempting to find their direction. Trust me, "Swoon" wouldn't be this high if these guys weren't creative and musically sound.

#3 - Placebo - Battle For The Sun

Selected Tracks: TocarAshtray Heart, TocarBright Lights, TocarHappy You're Gone

Placebo are still at it in 2009, and they don't offer too much more to their sound, but the subtleties on "Battle For The Sun" give their songs a new buoyant twist. A recognized level of maturity within the group is notable on the record; sources of influences have changed; "Bright Lights" leads me to believe the band listened to My Bloody Valentine a bit before recording the song.

The sorrow, introspection, and "freaks of nature" attitude Placebo presented throughout their career has been subdued, but fans should be able to latch onto certain songs that reminisce to tracks of yesteryear. A solid album. No more, no less. If you enjoyed the band before, you should find very little faults.

#2 - Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly

Selected Tracks: TocarBlue Bird, TocarBlanchard, TocarWild Roses

The siren of sleep. Hope Sandoval and her Warm Inventions return to soothe, play, wonder, and entrance. The lovely lady's sultry yet haunting, broken yet assured vocals transcend time and space on the second effort from the band, across soundscapes that are not unfamiliar to admirers of the Mazzy Star era. Yet it does not falter. "Through The Devil Softly" is a vivid, engaging dreamland that invites its listener for a ride / coast through heartache and bliss that proves Hope can still embrace and captivate her audience after eight years of leave. Folk psychedelia never sounded so good.

    #1
    - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

    Selected Tracks: TocarSkeletons, TocarHysteric, TocarZero

80s, Blondie, thumpa thumpa.. mix those together, and you've got a concoction that breathes new life into the YYYs. Known for their brash, in your face, "sex as combat" jingles from the past, the band shows that they know how to have a little fun without losing their identity. "It's Blitz!" is a confident extradition from their past work.

Karen O woos instead of hollers, Nick beats on a synth rather than his Fender, and Brian quietly moves everyone along. The album is a perfect mix of glee, glamour, and goodbyes. "Dancefloor versus ballad" meshes in a way only the YYYs can pull off. In my opinion, the best and strongest record of the year.

    Congrats guys!

  • Tuesday Ten: Top Ten Tracks of 2009 and summary of 2009

    Dez 16 2009, 19h17 por amodelofcontrol

So, before I rush headlong into my top ten tracks of 2009 (and then albums next week, gigs the week after), a quick mention of a few acts that have wowed me, bored me, surprised me or otherwise this year. Some of these may be in the other lists, others won't be.

So let's start with the good stuff. Perhaps more than in recent years I actually got into new music this year. So what is there to note? The post-metal thrill of And So I Watch You From Afar, for starters - not as serious as many of their peers, and they are awesome live, too. Well worth picking up the album. Also: Urceus Exit (the North American Seabound, perhaps? Similarly intelligent and effusive lyrical themes coupled with sleek electro-industrial-pop), The Big Pink (where shoegaze met pop and a smattering of industrial electronics to make an intriguing band), Necrotek (old-school industrial infused impressively with sheer hate), HEALTH (noisy-rock, electronics, some truly staggering technical ability, etc), and The Twilight Sad (shoegaze meets indie-pop, and they get along famously).

There were some surprises, too, this year - like the unexpected comebacks of Sunna and Imminent, both of which were great for very different reasons. And then there were the brilliant returns of Alice in Chains and The Prodigy, neither of which were mere exercises in nostalgia, much to my relief. A sign perhaps that I didn't have my ear to the ground as much as I should was the fact that I was totally surprised to find The PCP Principle signing to Hands Productions, and releasing a fantastic album. Also of note for this year was finding I liked Mesh after all...

Not every release was great this year, though, and a few really did disappointment me. In particular the new 16Voltwasn't as great, for me, as many others made out - more, er, organic than FullBlackHabit, there were some fleeting moments of brilliance on American Porn Songs but nowhere near enough. The new Behemoth album Evangelion suffered, like 16v, from the shadow of it's predecessor for me, too, while IAMX's third album, Kingdom of Welcome Addiction, was something of a damp squib. In fact, it was the sound of a long, ecstatic party that had come to an end - i.e. the bit where the dull people are left. It resulted in a patchy and frustrating album.

In other disappointments, not having time to do all the great music I've heard this year justice was a big minus. This will be sorted soon, I promise. Although not having my time wasted by expensive, overly long and poorly compiled compilations - Endzeit Bunkertracks Act IV being a particularly guilty party here. If this was a snapshot of the future of the electro/industrial/whatever scene, it's fucked. Also worth noting, as I finally leave the city for good this week, is that Sheffield is left with little more than HMV, Record Collector and the supermarkets to purchase music from, with the closure of Jack's Records last summer.

Two final things: in this year's guilty pleasures, there is only really the one - the oh-so-kitsch and fun Little Boots - no idea why, I just love her stuff. There is a longer list of irritations, as you might expect. Headed by two of the "great white hopes" this year: Florence and The Machine - whiny, irritating Alison Goldfrapp wannabe. Oh, and that godawful cover of You've Got The Love really gets my goat, too. Next. La Roux - if I want eighties synthpop, I'll listen to the real thing, rather than infuriating, over-produced facsimilies.

And as 19 million watch the winner of X-Factor, there is the continuing death of music television. How much longer before someone does a music video channel online? Properly, I don't mean like Youtube. Something interactive, with a decent resolution and a better selection. It's possible, I'm sure, my cynical mind suspects that the labels would never allow it, sadly. Also fucking me off is the continuing upward spiral of gig ticket prices, and of course their "booking fees". This would appear, despite it being a blatant case of ripping the punters off, to have no political will behind it to sort the situation, either. Me no understand...

So, back to good things: here are my top ten tracks of 2009, a list that has taken a while to collate.

    10
    Nachtmahr
    Code:red
    Alle Lust will Ewigkeit

Aimed squarely at the dancefloor, Nachtmahr's heavily sexualised and military imagery has grated a little to me, but musically they deliver the goods time and again - Thomas Rainer seems to simply want people to dance, and that's what his latest project do very well. Needless to say there are some belting tracks to slay dancefloors with, and this one is my favourite by miles. Beats turned up to eleven? Check. Harsh-sounding samples simply to give a couple of seconds breather? Check. Doesn't waste a second? Check. An object lesson in how to do dancefloor industrial (and I hear the live show is good fun, too).

    09
    16Volt
    TocarAlkali
    American Porn Songs

Yeah, so I didn't like all the album, but the opening track - and also the first promo track I got - is still utterly fantastic. In fact, one of the best 16v songs ever released, in my opinion. A slower, bruising rock track that opens up into a bright, buzzing chorus from out of nowhere, and also a reminder that 16v are, at their best, a lot more accessible than some might make out.

    08
    Alter der Ruine
TocarRelax And Ride It (Be My Enemy Remix)
    Beating A Dead Horse

The most immediate song on ADR's superb third album, it was no surprise to see it remixed by various people and it was quickly a dancefloor hit, too. While Memmaker's remix was a more straightforward dancefloor take, this one was fantastic fun. Be My Enemy, if you missed my previous mentions, is Phil Barry (ex-Cubanate), and if this remix was a way to get some attention to his new project, then job done. He turns the track into galloping industrial rock that is the perfect pace for the dancefloor, while keeping the best bits of the original intact too.

    07
Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions
    TocarTrouble
    Through The Devil Softly

Hope Sandoval is likely to get a lot of coverage in the music press soon with her collaboration on Massive Attack's forthcoming album having a likely-to-be controversial video (and the ongoing possibility of a new Mazzy Star album after fourteen years), but she deserves rather more for her long-awaited return with this album. Or, at least, this song, in my eyes, as I can't stop playing it. It's gorgeous, her warm, bluesy vocals taking centre stage as they should, with a sparse accompaniment. A song for dark nights staying in with your lover.

    06
    Left Spine Down
TocarProzac Nation - Retro Radio Radutron Mix By the Rabid Whole
    Smartbomb 2.3: The Underground Mixes
An astoundingly inventive remix by a seemingly up-and-coming Canadian industrial rock band, rather than just sticking a faster beat under the original (as far too many remixes do), The Rabid Whole's idea was to keep the vocals as they were, but bury them in radio static, with lots of "old" radio samples, with the track coming in and out of clarity like an old shortwave radio transmission - and the titled aim of a "retro" mix is complete. A great idea, and it gets full marks for execution, too - a fresh and unusual take on the remix norm that would get tiresome if endlessly repeated, but a blast in this instance.

    05
    KMFDM
    Davai
    Blitz

KMFDM's best album in years - appropriately marking their twenty-fifth birthday, too - had a whole host of storming tracks (in fact, I can't think of any filler at all other than the closer), but it was this, their first foray into using Russian in their lyrics, that was the unassailable peak. A pounding, anthemic industrial-metal track that harked back to the classic nineties KMFDM, but without merely relying on the past to make it great. A reminder that you can look forward too and still sound fantastic.

    04
    HEALTH
    Die Slow
    Get Color

I'm still not exactly sure how I'm supposed to describe this - industrial shoegaze, perhaps - but whatever, it was something of a red-herring for the rest of the album, which while more focussed than their debut, was still miles from the mainstream. This track, though, underpinned by a hulking, quasi-industrial beat and some impressive guitar treatments, sounded like nothing else upon release and still doesn't now. The video is, er, interesting, too.

    03
    My Dying Bride
    TocarFailure
    Bring Me Victory EP

I could, and probably will, go on and on about this song for ever more, but this cover is so good it deserves it's place here. A faithful re-reading of the majestic Swans ode to the crushing inevitability of failing time and again in life, MDB were pretty much the only band I could think of who could do justice to the sheer emotional weight of this track, and so it proves - Aaron Stainthorpe's vocals are perfect for it, and musically little is changed other than the band joining in later in the track. One version of this will play at my funeral.

    02
    Necro Facility
    Do you feel the same
    Septic VIII

I love it when a band finally shows the promise they've had all the long. A band I'd previously thought were an interesting industrial act, but too close perhaps in style to Skinny Puppy, their first taster of new material in a while was this, which was put at the front of Septic VIII, and with good reason - they've finally gained something of their own sound, and it's strikingly brilliant. The SP-influence is still there, but with melodic vocals, a thumping, powerful production and a killer chorus. When the only complaint is that the song is too short, you know it's good.

    01
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    TocarZero
    It's Blitz!

I wasn't really all that bothered about this New York band previously - sure, they'd made a couple of good singles but I wasn't really caught by them, until I heard this. Eschewing the guitar-rock for a synth-based rock instead, it takes it's time to get it's claws in, but once the chorus ramps up, before the track literally explodes into life for the second verse...Honestly, this is fucking glorious, the sound of a band at the peak of their powers and in full knowledge that they have a song of pure pop genius on their hands.

  • My Top 20 Album Releases of 2OO9

    Dez 11 2009, 8h54 por petrolatum

The last year of the first decade of the 21st century provided me with some albums that rocked my world and then some. Here's what I consider the best of the past year.

    HONORABLE MENTIONS:

    The Golden Filter

The Golden Filter is one of my favorite new acts of the year but having only released six songs over two singles (Solid Gold and THUNDERBIRD) so far, I couldn't really find a place for them on the list. The Golden Filter's unique brand of colorful, fortune-teller-esque disco is something I can definitely get down with and I predict big things for them. Their full-length debut album will be released sometime in the spring of 2010.

    Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM

Charlotte Gainsbourg is definitely on my list of favorite actresses and regulation hottie chicks that I'd bend my sexual orientation for. And her new album, with help from Beck, is exactly what a Charlotte/Beck collaboration should sound like. Sleek, sexy, polished and intriguing. Tracks like IRM, Trick Pony, and La Collectionneuse are big standouts for me. This album was released early this month in Gainsbourg's native France but the album isn't released in the US until January 26th, 2010 so I didn't include it on the list. However, if I did place it on the list, it'd probably be somewhere in the teens.

    Beach House - Teen Dream

My oh my, what do I say about this one...
Well, I think it's safe to say that Beach House is my current favorite artist of all time... the only artist that surpasses them is the genius of modern music that is Björk. Beach House's first two albums already put them at this level of adoration for me. And then along came their third album. This piece of monumental art won't be released until January 26th either so I also haven't included it on the list. But if I did, I can guarantee it'd be #1. It will most definitely be #1 on my list for 2010. And when I'm 80 years old and make a list of my favorite albums of all time, Teen Dream will definitely be in my top 3; I can say that with confidence. The entire album is absolutely gorgeous and engaging but I'd have the say the penultimate track, Real Love, is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. It's almost scary how good this song is to me. Music hasn't ever moved me like this. It's a perfect album and I can't say enough good things about it.

aaaaaaaand moving on to my Top 20 Album Releases of 2OO9:

#20: Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong

A vast improvement to their sloppy self-titled debut. Well, I guess some would say this album's sloppy as well but I guess what I'm trying to say is that it pulls it off better. Tracks like
TocarThe Desert and TocarThe End sound tighter and more focused, while songs like TocarCan't Get Over You and TocarBefore I Start To Cry show a more vulnerable side to the V Girls that we haven't seen before.

#19[: Zola Jesus - The Spoils

Zola Jesus sounds like nothing I did before. She's young (my age), hot, and her voice is seriously out of this world. The music she makes (which has been given the kinda lame genre name "Lo-Fi Goth") is dark, spooky, stealthy, and emotionally evoking. Her vocal delivery is borderline opera and can send chills down your spine. Opening track TocarSix Feet (From My Baby) is the highlight of the album in my opinion and a beautiful introduction to a truly harrowing album.

#18: Real Estate - Real Estate

Like being stoned? You'll like this album. New Jersey's Real Estate makes music that you put on while you're cruising down a coastal highway with the windows down on a perfect-temperature sunny day. It's not really anything new but it's definitely something that's pleasant on the ears... very pleasant.

#17: Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic

Here We Go Magic's debut album is like having your own personal opium den. Imagine countless fluffy pillows, colorful tapestries everywhere, and seeing everything in kaleidoscope vision. That's why I love this album.

#16: Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly

Hope Sandoval has one of the most velvety, beautiful voices you'll ever hear. She could sing you the dictionary and you'd fall into a euphoric lull, just like I do when I hear her music. Her first album in eight years, Through the Devil Softly is no less gorgeous than her band's first record or the three albums from her previous band Mazzy Star. The album sounds slightly narcotic, like a haze that washes over you. TocarSatellite is sleepy enough to slip you into a coma... in a good way.

#15: Washed out - Life Of Leisure

There's nothing like kicking off your sandals at the beach on a hot summer day, burying your feet in the sand, lying back and staring into the sun until your world becomes soaked in reverb and you're kinda blind. Washed Out's debut EP is the perfect soundtrack for that activity.

    #14: St. Vincent - Actor

The cover of this album perfectly reflects the music; elegant, poised, left-field and pretty. I had a hard time getting into Annie Clark's first album but this one worked like a charm. The lyrics are engaging, to say the least, and the melodies are poignantly striking; a perfect pop album with a twist. Songs like Marrow and Save Me From What I Want would never receive radio play but have a lovely accessibility about them.

#13: Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms

Video game blips and beeps, head-bobbing hooks, distorted vocals with a little bit of LSD is what Neon Indian sounds like to me. It sound completely retro and at the same time, it sounds like the year 2020. If the song TocarEphemeral Artery doesn't get you moving, you're probably not human.

#12: Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

I was never big on AC until this album. At times, I still dismiss them as utter trash but then I listen to MPP again and am reminded that there are definitely some shards of genius in there. This album is going to be remembered as their poppiest, most accessible record. It'll also probably be remembered as their best. This album does for my ears what drugs do to your pupils. Songs like Daily Routine and Brother Sport can whip your brain up into a dizzy euphoric slush in just one listen.

#11: Cotton Jones - PARANOID COCOON

Another great album for driving on a beautiful, sunny day, this album is great from start to finish. Mellow, organic, and folky. The duo's male/female vocals really work well together and it's hard not to just chill out when you're listening to this one. I Am The Changer is one of the best songs to listen to on a warm, summer evening.

    #10: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have made quite the transformation since they emerged at the beginning of the decade. They've evolved from thrashy lo-fi punk to calculated alternative rock to... pop/electronic/but-still-rock... and I wouldn't have it any other way. In my opinion, this is the YYY's golden album so far. They've fused electronics and rock beautifully and the raw emotion that's felt in songs like TocarSoft Shock and TocarSkeletons are hard to compete with. And the cover is beyond awesome.

    #9: Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

While it doesn't posess the ornate gold-metal achievement of their previous album, this one is a great step forward in terms of their sound. Grizzly Bear's use of a wide selection of instruments provides our ears with lovely, well-crafted, shimmery pop songs. Ready, Able earns them an A+ for sure.

    #8: The xx - xx

Pitchfork was accurate when they said, "It is so fully formed and thoughtful that it feels like three or four lesser, noisier records should have preceded it." in their review of The xx's debut album. It's a focused record, it's got plenty of different shades of the same color. The record makes a quiet entrance and a quiet exit but it leaves you breathless. The sixth track, Fantasy, is the centerpiece of the album and is as effective as a scream, though the song itself is hardly a whisper.

#7: Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

Natasha Kahn has stolen my heart on this one. She has crafted some music that is seriously beautiful. A perfect listen in the desert, this album is a work of art. She has fused her more acoustic style from her first record with a touch of electronica and modern pop to make a gorgeous mosaic of emotion, hope, and delicate beauty. TocarDaniel is undoubtedly one of the best songs of the year and album closer TocarThe Big Sleep gave me chills like I've never felt before.

    #6: warpaint - Exquisite Corpse

This 6-song EP from newcomers Warpaint is very promising. I simply cannot wait for them to record a full-length album. It's so refreshing to hear a brand new band that can already play - we don't have to wait two or three albums for them to get really good. This EP is already down-tempo perfection and is rich like mahogany. Standouts are definitely TocarStars and TocarBillie Holiday, the latter which concludes with the most haunting coda I've ever heard. These ladies are beautiful song-crafters and I cannot wait for more.

    #5: Telepathe - Dance Mother

Telepathe sounds like 2009. Their nine-song debut album is an unorthodox electronic endeavor and rubs me the right way, that's for sure. Opener TocarSo Fine is a club-banger that's sure to be a hit at your next hipster party and Can't Stand It has a sort of ethereal beauty that is only achieved when you're standing at the top of the tallest mountain. The beats are fresh, the vocals are... interesting, and the girls are hot. What's left to be desired?

    #4: Atlas Sound - Logos

I'm a huuuuge Deerhunter fan but after hearing Atlas Sound's first solo album, I wasn't too jazzed about the follow-up. But man, talk about a step forward! Bradford Cox has outdone himself yet again. From start to finish, Cox has made a perfect pop album (spiked with painkillers, of course). It's trippy, yet accessible. TocarWashington School is what it sounds like to be robotripping, TocarShelia couldn't be a more perfect poppy love song, and Quick Canal (w/ Laetitia Sadier) is one of the most dizzying songs I've ever heard (and I mean that in a gooooood way).

#3: Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster

I am a firm believer in the theory that you cannot call yourself a fan of pop music if you don't totally love Lady GaGa. She IS pop. She is a breath of fresh air for mainstream music and I personally feel she gets ragged on slightly too much. You can't deny her vocal talent, her clothes are on-par creatively with fashion icons like Björk and Róisín Murphy, and it is scary how many catchy hooks she can fit into one song. TocarBad Romance is GaGa's catchiest song to date and has been embedded in my head since I first heard it. The entire 8-song mini album is wonderful. A great pop record.

    #2: Peaches - I Feel Cream

I've always had a soft spot for the Peach with a hole in the middle, but she has really outdone herself on this album. She hasn't lost her raunchy signature but she's upped her game when it comes to production. The beats are extraordinary, her vocal delivery is flawless, her rhymes are tighter, and the songs are just outright catchier. Tracks like Talk To Me and Lose You even show a vulnerability that Peaches has never displayed, without losing her slickness. Without a doubt her best record.

#1: Fever Ray - Fever Ray

I have never seen a project come together quite as well as Fever Ray has. The visual imagery and music work hand in hand like a well-oiled machine and the result is stunning. This album is dark, brooding, ominous, and outright creepy. These songs have an anxious, neurotic feel to them and provide your ears with the most innovative of sounds. All ten tracks are necessary; they paint a vivid picture of modern horror. And like I said earlier, the visual aspect of the Fever Ray project is flawless as well. Check out all of her music videos and clips of her live tour; everything Fever Ray is awesome, you can't go wrong.

    Top 23 Alben 2009

    2. Antony and the JohnsonsThe Crying Light
Einfach eine unwahrscheinlich schöne Scheibe. Gänsehautfaktor.

    3. Sophie HungerMonday's Ghost

    4. Bat for LashesTwo Suns
Sozusagen ein Best-of-Album all unserer Lieblingssängerinnen.

    5. The Bird and the BeeRay Guns Are Not Just The Future
Ein unschlagbares Gute-Laune-Album. Elektronischer Pop at its best.

    6. Dark Was The Night: A Red Hot Compilation

    7. Not Given Lightly - A Tribute To the Giant Golden Book Of New Zealand`s Alternative Music Scene
2009 war einfach ein sehr gutes Sampler-Jahr. :)

    8. The xxxx

    10. Danger Mouse and SparklehorseDark Night Of The Soul
For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will."

    11. The Flaming LipsEmbryonic

    13. The GossipMusic For Men

    14. The Black Heart ProcessionSix

    15. Built to SpillThere Is No Enemy

    16. The Big PinkA Brief History of Love

    17. Soap&SkinLovetune for Vacuum
    Ein sehr intensives, berührendes Album.

    18. Masha QrellaSpeak Low

    19. Scott MatthewThere Is An Ocean That Divides
Das Album des Jahres 2009, das es mit seinem Titel "There Is An Ocean That Divides And With My Longing I Can Charge It With A Voltage Thats So Violent To Cross It Could Mean Death" ins Guinness-Buch der Rekorde geschafft hat.

    20. A Place to Bury StrangersExploding Head

    22. Rykarda ParasolFor Blood and Wine

    23. Hope Sandoval & The Warm InventionsThrough The Devil Softly

    4. Antony and the Johnsons

    5. The Raveonettes

Can't be arsed to write an essay, so here's my baker's dozen in order:

    1. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart -The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

My favourite album of the year by quite a sizeable distance. Not seen this in any end-of-year lists so far, but this, for me, has been one of my most played and loved albums of this year. Yeah, it's shameless early MBV/JAMC grave-robbing, but that's the reason I love it. It takes me back to those great times. And for this reason, I'll be eternally grateful to this album for making me feel young again:)) This is Music to fall in love to/with. Frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't been more popular, it's perfect pop. Excellent.

    2. Wilco (The Album)-Wilco

Another solid album from Jeff Tweedy and Co. They seem to have got over their 'difficult' period (which was also excellent. YHF is one of my all-time favourites), and seem to have settled into an accessible, dare I say, MOR, radio-friendly sound. That's not a criticism. This album is a pleasure from start to finish. The sound suits them, and they seem fresh and untroubled these days.

    3. My Way-Ian Brown

what more needs to be said about this man? One of my heroes from way back. This is perhaps his most solid album. The music is fantastic, and his lyrics are in fine fettle. It sounds a bit like a hip-hop album, which suits his voice, never the best singer in the world, but he seems to have found a style which suits his obvious limitations. Unfortunately, as one review observed, it seems to have an air of finality about it. If so, it's a great way to bow out after an illustrious career.

    4. Humbug-Arctic Monkeys

So then, that difficult third album. Mostly produced by Josh Homme, it's pretty dark and moody, as expected, but it's a mature effort. The shoutboxes and forums were awash with 'not as good as the first one' cries. Good. They've moved on, they're not teenagers in Sheffield anymore. Deal with it. Damned if you don't progress, damned if you do, it seems. After multiple listens, it reveals itself to be the equal to its predecessors, but the boo-boys obviously can't get past one listen, such is the limited attention span of the modern music fan. shame, it's a corker.

    5. Monsters of Folk-Monsters of Folk

Whoah! A folk supergroup! Sounds very Travelling Wilburys/CSNY, doesn't it? The result of Conor Oberst, M. Ward and Jim James' collaboration is a stellar effort. The first half of the album is faultless, the second half tails off a bit towards the end. But with three of the biggest talents in American music at the moment, not much can go wrong. Excellent.

    6. It's Blitz-Yeah Yeah Yeahs

When you've got one of the best guitarists in the business, ditching the guitars in favour of synths is indeed a bold move. But they lost none of their edge as they made a play for the dancefloor. Still one of the most exciting live bands around, this is an excellent addition to their canon. A long time fan, It's probably my favourite by them. That's saying a lot.

    7. Dark Night Of The Soul-Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse

Uber producer, danger Mouse and Mark Linkous, essentially Sparklehorse, combine forces for this corker of an album. I've loved Sparklehorse for years, but get this, he hardly even sings on it. Why bother when you've got a guest-list like this?: (deep breath) wayne Coyne, Gruff Rhys, Iggy Pop, Black Francis, Julian Casablancas, james Mercer, jason Lytle, Suzanne Vega, Nina Perssons and Vic Chestnutt. Wow! The album is in three very distinct 'acts' and hangs together perfectly. Awesome stuff. Oh yeah, and David Lynch is involved too.

    8. Album-Girls

To be honest, I don't know too much about this band, as I live in China and miss a lot of the hype surrounding bands. But I picked up this by chance, and it's definitely a winner. Of course it was hyped on the internet, but well-deserved I think. Pretty laid-back, they seem to be able to toss off shoegaze-y-meets-Beach Boys melodies with relative ease. A surprising one, then, but a pleasant surprise. Just don't call me a hipster!

    9. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix-Phoenix

Phoenix have been burrowing away now, reasonably unnoticed, for quite a few years, tossing out albums every couple of years. Everyone seems to know them, but they never seem to have got that elusive mainstream support. All that changed with this, their fourth, and best album. It's a joy from start to finish, with no filler. Let's hope they can capitalise on this and get the success they so richly deserve.

    10. Merriweather Post Pavilion-Animal Collective

Ok, let's get this out of the way. I didn't want to include this, because it seems to be everyone's number one this year, and doesn't need anymore praise heaped upon it. Then I decided not o be such a churlish twat. It's not my number one, but there's no denying that it's certainly one of the best records of this year, if not, this decade. If we'll still be listening to any of these albums in ten years, it'll probably be this one. From the cover in, it's a full-on, psychedelic treat. Nine albums in and they've struck gold. This is a classic album.

    11. Two Dancers-Wild Beasts

A relative newcomer to this band, I missed their first album, and have only recently got into this album. It's eccentric, in the way The Smiths and Morrissey are/were. They're the obvious touchstones, both lyrically and musically. If you can stomach his voice, there's a lot to enjoy here. I predict good things for this band.

    12. Primary Colours-The Horrors

I wasn't expecting this. Their first album was a steaming pile of dogshite, and they were just NME-hyped scenesters with more hair than tunes. I wanted to hate this album too, but my mate kept harrassing me through Facebook to listen to 'Sea Within A Sea'. well, I heard that, and I was gobsmacked. They've totally transformed their sound from wannabe goth garage band to a Krautrock/MBV/Joy Division/Psychedelic Furs behemoth of a band. The most unexpected, pleasantly surprising album of the year.

    13. My Maudlin Career-Camera Obscura

I've been a fan of this band for a while now. They've gone from being a poor-man's Belle and Sebastian to, in my opinion, something even better. Their last album was a great record, but they have progressed (slightly), beefed up their sound, and this is a thing of great beauty. Its Spectoresque wall-of-sound approach is exquisitely orchestrated, and Tracyanne Campbell's gorgeous vocals and lyrics envelop you and warms the cockles. It's an album for lovers about love, whether in it or out of it, it's saccharine and bittersweet. It's one of the best albums of the year. Another band who have caught more attention this year. Good look to 'em. They deserve it.

There we have it then. Honourable mentions go to the albums released this year by:

Bat for Lashes, Dinosaur Jr., Bad Lieutenant, M. Ward, Jamie T, Fever Ray, Doves, The xx, Air, Kasabian, Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, The Felice Brothers, Jason Lytle, The Big Pink, Neko Case, Peter Doherty, Julian Casablancas, Soulsavers, Lily Allen, The Raveonettes, Grizzly Bear, White Lies, Richard Hawley, Florence and The Machine, La Roux, The Low Anthem, Lady GaGa, Dizzee Rascal, The Drums , Super Furry Animals, and last but not least, Bruce Springsteen

Too late to include in the list, but absolutely gorgeous album:When The Devil's LoosebyA.A. Bondy

Sorry if I've missed any. I'm sure I have.

    Cheers,

have a good Christmas and New Year.

    xx]

Since I joined last.fm, I've done a couple of end of the year most played albums journals. I intend on keeping a tradition of sorts, but in order to celebrate the "Best of 2009" last.fm countdown, and group, I've decided to make a preliminary list extended beyond my usual 15 releases and place them arbitrarily, by the way of guess-making, based on my current mood and recollection of enjoyment and satisfaction. It may very well change in one week... That's why I like to order these journals by play count!

Now these year end journals usually contain a lengthy rant about each release, but I'll save that for the most played recap.
