  • Live Show: Del tha Funkee Homosapien - November 25, 2009

    Nov 27 2009, 17h50 por Syn_Zero

Wed 25 Nov – Del tha Funkee Homosapien
    ---

A first for me in that I had never been to a hip-hop show before, but I'm glad I went. When glossing over GAMH's calendar a few months back I happened to see Del - part of one of my friend Johnny's favorite bands, Hieroglyphics - was going to be performing, and we decided to go. Surprisingly enough most of our friends, many of which don't even listen to hip-hop, came with us.

The night started off kind of weird, because I realized at the door that I didn't actually order a ticket like I thought I did, so after rushing back to my apartment and frantically trying to find some record (and failing) we came back so I could buy a ticket. We were pretty much the first people in line save for a guy who got there maybe a minute or two ahead of us. Surprisingly enough, Del tha Funkee Homosapien came out a few minutes before the door opened to grab a smoke and say, "Thanks for coming early". He's actually kind of short in person (no offense, man!).

When we got inside we headed over to the merch table to check out the offerings, and like we had heard about Del's other shows, they gave us all a free pair of Skull Candy headphones (a decent enough over-the-head set) and a copy of Funk man, which Johnny and I got signed by Del himself (sweet!). Now that is a great way to promote your music.

I kind of found it interesting how many white people there were in the crowd. Okay, so I'm half, and my friends and I are all Asian, but still. It really does kind of match that article over on "Stuff White People Like", haha.

Up until the day before none of us knew there would be any opening/associate acts, and even then we didn't really know who the heck any of them were. The opener, Hopie Spitshard, a local SF rapper, was alright. I'm not really into straight-up rap, and she utilized a bit too much background/pre-recorded vocals for my taste, and both she and the DJ messed up during their set a few times. I mean, if she's collaborating with high-caliber artists like Del then she must be good, so I'm willing to go ahead with the notion that she just had an off-night.

The following act, Serendipity Project, a Santa Cruz (SC represent!) based band combining hip-hop, funk, and rock, was more my thing. Their songs really got the growing crowd moving to the music, and they had so much energy it was hard not to at least tap your foot while they were up there jamming. The combination of styles was interesting to listen to, and during their last song they gave each and every member a solo - including the DJ Zack Hendrix, who didn't do much during SP's set but wound up sticking around to DJ for Bukue One and Del. Great stuff.

Bukue's set was long and interesting. He did a lot of minimalist, freestyle rap in between the song tracks, and joked a lot with Hendrix while also pulling off some skateboard tricks on-stage. He's definitely got a way with words, for sure.

Sometime around midnight - later than any of us thought the show would last - Del took the stage with fellow Hieroglyphics members A Plus and Nobody (they said he was new to the group). They brought a ton of energy and performed songs not only from Del's solo work, but also some Hieroglyphics songs, which Johnny was excited about. Some of the memorable tracks for me include Mistadobalina and TocarNo Need For Alarm; I don't know the Hiero tracks since I've never heard more than what Johnny's played on his MP3 player in the car. Del even took a step back and let A Plus and Nobody do a few songs themselves, which was cool. Though they didn't do an encore, they ended with a song pretty much everyone in the audience knew: TocarClint Eastwood. That was pretty awesome, especially since Del did his own lyrics instead.

All in all it was a great show, and I'm actually glad it went on longer than it did. Johnny was satisfied, especially since he got to see one of his favorite artists live and picked up a free CD and a Hieroglyphics shirt. The vibe at a hip-hop show is so different than that of the usual indie/rock shows I go to, and I'd totally be down to see others in the future. Heck, we were looking at The Roots for New Year's Eve, but I hear the tickets are expensive as hell. Oh well.

  • Favorite Albums For Summer 2009

    Set 17 2009, 5h05 por sandrob57

As summer is coming to a close, I thought it would be cool to look back at the music I've been listening to and take a few minutes to record the albums I've enjoyed the most.

    1) Insurgentes - Steven Wilson
This album came out in February of this year, but I never really took the time to appreciate it until now. Insurgentes is a gem, and probably the best album Steven Wilson has written and produced, second only to Stupid Dream. The highlights of this album cannot be listed as song titles, but instead are best articulated through musical emotions. The album mixes electronic beats with dense guitar riffs, it leads you to an ambient dream world only to strip that away with a progressively growing wall of sound. You will find yourself rocking out to indulgent guitar riffs breaking through a dozen layers of sound, only to be put back in your seat by a masterful piano advancement that's reminiscent of a forgotten symphony or sonata. I only have good things to say about this album, and I hope I can look back at this post in a few years and recapture just how strongly this album effected me at this moment in time. Insurgents is a monument to the beauty and creativity that can be found in music, and should be cherished by those who have the opportunity to listen to it.

    2) None Shall Pass - Aesop Rock
This album blew my mind. I have been into underground hip hop for a while, with artists like CunninLynguists and Abstract Tribe Unique, but this album floored me. I had heard Aesop before on the album Fucked Up Friends by Tobacco (he was featured in one track) and I instantly fell in love with his style; it's a combination of smooth lyricism, with a rugged tone that fits perfectly within his imaginative beats. As soon as I took the time to hear None Shall Pass, my love of Aesop Rock's magnificent hop hop style grew exponentially. His lyrical content is intellectual and full of imagery, yet it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's just plain bad ass. There really is no better way to cruise the sun drenched coast of Southern California than with the hip hop mastery of Aesop Rock booming from the stereo.

    3) OK Computer - Radiohead
What can I say about this album that has not been said by millions of fans before me? It's an atmospheric journey through the minds of highly talented musical artisans. The back-to-back combination of Paranoid Andriod and Subterranean Homesick Alien are enough to seal the deal for me; but luckily, the album is packed desnley with more fantastic songs. It was great when it came out six years ago, and I've recently been rediscovering it's brilliance. It's a powerful example of an album that only gets better as time goes by.

    4) The Bedlam in Goliath - The Mars Volta
This is the third album on this list that I've revisited recently only to be blown away more than I was the first time. The first half of this album is so perfect, no adjective I could conjure is fit enough to describe it. If you have never heard this band before, unique would be a good way to describe their style - energetic is another good word. But don't let thier one-of-a-kind sound turn you off; the deeper you dig into their music, the greater the reward. This is album is no exception, and it's easily one of their best.

Other top albums from summer 2009...
Octahedron by The Mars Volta - Released spring 09, superb album
The Incident by Porcupine Tree - The Incident debuted this week and it's a solid release. More time will have to go by before I can objectively judge this album.
Stupid Dream by Porcupine Tree - A Classic, and my favorite from this band
3rd Eye Vision by Hieroglyphics - The best album from a group of highly talented underground hip hop artists
A Piece of Strange by CunninLynguists - Another superb hip hop album
Eating Us by Black Moth Super Rainbow - Electronica at it's finest
Pressure Chief by Cake - This album is completely underrated by a majority of Cake fans
Rhythms From A Cosmic Sky by Earthless - The world needs to hear this band

  • My top 52 hip hop albums

    Jul 20 2009, 15h37 por munn

So i'm supposed to be studying topology right now, that's not happening cos it's a pile of shit so i decided to compile my top 50 hiphop albums.
Then I realised i'd forgotten to put in two Gang Starr albums and had to go back and fix it, hence the stupid formatting. Anyway, they're in a rough order but it's not gospel as I can't really rank one particular album over another, but i can usually say what my top 10 are, so they're roughly in order but depending on how i'm feeling i might like the 6th listed album more than the 3rd listed album depending on my mood or whatever, ken what i mean.

    1-10
Eric B. & Rakim - Follow the Leader
Wu Tang Clan- Enter The Wu Tang (36 Chambers)
Public Enemy- It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Biggie Smalls - Ready to Die
    Nas- Illmatic
    GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords
    Dr. Dre - The Chronic
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
    Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele

    11-20
    Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Prince Paul - Prince Among Thieves
    Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt
    Nwa - Straight Outta Compton
Jungle Brothers - Straight Out the Jungle
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
    EPMD - Strictly Business
The D.O.C. - No One Can Do It Better
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet

    21-31
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
    Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
Big Daddy Kane - Long Live the Kane
    Dr. Dre - 2001
    Nas - Stillmatic
    Dr Octagon - Dr Octagonecologyst
    Ghostface Killah - Ironman
Mobb Deep - Hell on Earth
    Method Man - Tical
    Ice Cube - Death Certificate
    Gang Starr - Daily Operation

    32-41
    Common (Sense) - Resurrection
Masta Killa - No Said Date
ODB - Return To The 36 Chambers
Gravediggaz - Niggamortis (6 Feet Deep in the US)
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
    2Pac - Rap Phenomenon II
    Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique
Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted
Souls of Mischief - 93 Til Infinity
    Run D.M.C. - Raising Hell

    42-51
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
Scarface - Mr Scarface Is Back
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
    Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown
    Wyclef Jean - The Carnival
    Main Source - Breaking Atoms
    Onyx - Bacdafucup
Lauryn Hill - Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
    LL Cool J - Radio
    Volume 10 - Hip-Hopera
Gang Starr - Step In The Arena

    Honourable mentions go to;

    The Game - The Documentary
    Jay Z - The Blueprint
    Genius/GZA - GrandMasters
dead prez - Let's Get Free
    Hieroglyphics - 3rd Eye Vision

There are a few omissions that people will certainly disagree with; no Outkast, Kweli or Eminem. I just don't like them enough to consider putting them into a top 50. And there's no real 2pac albums, just a mix tape, but that's in there because i prefer it to any of his studio albums really.
Big L and Redman aren't in there either, but that's not through liking them or not, rather because i haven't listened to them enough yet to decide how much I like them (criminal, I know).

Anyway that's it, feel free to blast me for forgetting something or to agree with me for being spot on. Or even better, recommend some stuff that isn't there.
I'll add images later, this has taken ages and i need a break
