  • My Evolution of Music Preferences, Thus Far

    Jun 14 2009, 5h42 por rachelleTHRASH

This journal is under construction. A lot of the wording/phrasing is rough for my standards, and at the time that I wrote it, I was writing as my thoughts came out. (:

    Pre-2005
Bold mainstream adherent. Woke up to a daily routine of MTV and VH1, and my best commuting friend was XM radio. Bring on the Maroon 5, 50 Cent, and Mariah Carey.

2005-2006: The Dawn of Last.fm, Limewire, and Yahoo Radio
The transition is almost beautiful. I look back at myself as such a naive little seed, blooming. This is the beginning of the passion. Characteristic artists include
    Hawk Nelson
    The Early November
    Reggie and the Full Effect
    Taking Back Sunday
    Saves the Day
    Matchbook Romance
    Saosin
Just barely touching the surface of underground music. What the fuck was emo? What was post-hardcore? I felt a desire to fit into this culture.

As the title suggests, I wouldn't have begun to listen to different music without Yahoo Radio, which was played during my hours of IMing. From there, my spurring interest called for last.fm, which my brother had previously exposed me to. Additionally, I wouldn't have been able to truly listen to anything without having the tracks, and that is where Limewire's role is born.

    2006-2007: Fuse TV
Screamo music, and Fuse TV was the door. I began to be drawn to band t's, Vans kicks and skinny jeans. Essential artists of this era include
    The Sleeping
    Thrice
    Paramore
    Jack's Mannequin
    Something Corporate
    Hidden in Plain View
    The Used.

Artists formulating curiosities were Underoath and The Bled. I'm being exposed to more post-hardcore music, and more band names. Still, the progression is nothing notable.

At this point, artists never really meant anything deep for me. Music was entertainment and a hobby.

    2007-2008: Warped Tour
I hate to be trite, but Warped Tour did become a strong impetus of musical discovery for me. It began by searching through the band list of the event, and then actually going to see all the bands. Music revealed such an alive form of itself. I can experience music this way. Music unites. I was a part of a bigger world. Drums sound so brilliant from stage. This day was pure euphoria.

    Bands include:
    Emery
    Killswitch Engage
    My American Heart
    Silverstein
    Norma Jean
    Haste the Day

At this point, my cache of iTunes tracks were about 2500.

    2008-2009
Now, the real fun begins. This age is characterized by a very hasty growth in taste. Definitions of -cores and familiarity with a wide range of genres was within my knowledge. Artists rocketed from 500 to over a thousand. I can now differentiate between elements and instruments of a song. Song tracks rose to 5,000. Preferences spawned within hip hop, straightedge hardcore, 80s punk, deathcore, metalcore, powerpop, and electro-pop. Subscriptions were made to Alternative Press, AMP magazine, and Revolver, and the readings were virtually religious. I began to support local music, attend more shows, and read on DIY and the music industry. I wanted to devote my life to developing music. This was the first time that my music was truly defined in stone, not to assume that things won't change from here.

    Artists include:
    Architects
    August Burns Red
    Romance On A Rocketship
    Tegan and Sara
    Tyga
    The Tony Tapdance Extravaganza
    Kottonmouth Kings
    Black Flag
    Circle Jerks
    xAFBx
    E-40
    Hyper Crush
