+ I didn't find a lot of time to gather music during 2008. It's something I regret. I spent most of my time in a whirlwind of work and buried in squeezing time in to sleep and feed my cat (barely!) but the music I did listen to that was new meant a lot to me. There were the long car-rides where an Icelandic band would swell meditatively in my speakers during the long airport road in the middle night. I swear angels gently picked my car up in the sky one night, just above the Arkansas River. Or maybe aliens abducted me into their lights. I still don't know, Don't care. They're welcome back. A part-time folkster, part-time punkster shocked me into shreds with her varied beauty of a raw "rock" album that still amazes me. Some of the best songwriting I've ever heard. There, of course, was my honorary Scandinavian citizenship in their indie-pop world that had to be fed. I wasn't let down by the Belle & Sebastian wanna-bes, the quaint little anti-folkies or the poppy-punk of fjord-anti-divas. So much so, I never wanted to come back. Then there's the Americana that rooted me down, rocking-chair porch-like. What's stranger is that almost all of the "Americana" I really liked didn't actually come from America, rather Australia and Canada! Go figure. Finally, there were the odd gems that were more like old-familiars that came back. Tap-dancing pretty haterators, long-time-loved coffeshop folkies, indie college emo-pop'n'lockers and a return to folk-tronica from one of my favorite clown-dressing, forest-wondering vocalists who thankfully dropped the Scissor Sister beats for something that pumps more like my own flawed heart. I'm glad she got lost. It's how I felt a lot of 2008, however numb I was to even notice it. Thankfully, all these artists became soundtracks to my sudden year. I'm sure I'll look back at 2008 through these songs, like I always do, and suddenly remember things I blocked out of memory or times I just dwell upon obsessively in my mind; eventually they'll complete the story or at least continue to help it make sense. After all, isn't that what music is for. Ha, and they say smell is the strongest memory sense. Well, those people must have never listened to...
