2007: Staying Power
Jan 4 2009, 17h31 por kboose
Since I just did my review of my top 2008 albums, I figured that I'd go back to 2007 and see which albums were strong enough to still be great after 2008. Well, here it is!
1. Symphony X--Paradise Lost

I woke up at 10:00 the morning this was released just so I could rush down to my local store to pick up this album--I had been waiting impatiently for quite a long time! When I couldn't find it, I almost blew a gasket. Then I was fortunate enough to find two copies misplaced in Raven-Symoné's section--yes, the Disney D-list actress/singer. I then got home and played this album all week. I've been attached to this album ever since, loving ever heavy, yet beautiful minute of it. There is anger here, but not angst or pointless vulgarity--this is how aggressive music should be done (then again, I like Strapping Young Lad as well...). Every song here is brilliant, from the bombastic intro, to the riff-driven "Set the World On Fire (The Lie of Lies)," to the mesmerizing "Paradise Lost," to the epic "Walls of Babylon." This is simply one of my favorite albums of all time.
2. Devin Townsend--Ziltoid The Omniscient

ATTAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!! I may be in the minority who thinks that this rivals "Ocean MAchine: Biomech" as one of Devin's best works, but this was undoubtedly one of the best releases of 2007. If Symphony X hadn't released an album, this would have easily taken the top spot. It has coffee, comedy, aliens, and metal--what more does anyone need?!?!?!? This falls into the category of "heavy yet beautiful" that I love to use to describe some albums. There are some sections of fun, headbanging chugging ("Ziltoidia Attaxx!!!"), as well as other peaceful sections ("Solar Winds"). Simply put, this is one of Devin's most diverse and fun albums to listen to. This is just an excellent album!
3. Helloween--Gambling With The Devil

This was certainly a sleeper album. Released in December, most year-end lists were already made, but this slab of energetic power metal should have been near the top of most lists. This is a well produced, heavy, powerful, and epic piece of metal. All of the tracks are strong on their own, but as a whole, this album just "clicks." I'm not the biggest fan of regular power metal, but this album is just brilliant in every way. Is it wrong to say that I like this more than Blind Guardian's classic "Imaginations from the Other Side"?
4. Dark Tranquillity--Fiction

"Fiction" is one of the most surprising albums I've heard from the melodeath genre. I expected something basic like "Character," but this is some deep, introspective, and downright powerful music. The perfect production makes everything sound more emotional, and this emotion just shines all over the place. Songs like "Nothing to No One" are strightforward songs that have everything you know and love about DT, but others like "Icipher" (with some excellent lyrics) are so slow, yet capture the listener in the atmosphere. This is a chilling album that embodies all of the good qualities of melodeath. Simply brilliant!
5. Kamelot--Ghost Opera

Ok, this isn't as good as any of their last three albums, but "Ghost Opera" still retains Kamelot's signature sound. Roy's vocals are some of the best metal has to offer, and he shines on this album. Otherwise, everything is simplified a bit. Still, the songs are strong (even if the lyrics aren't for once). The guitarwork is great as usual, the bass is nonexistent as usual, and the keyboards fit in nicely as usual. This is a great album by any standards, but considering Kamelot's back catalog, this is a bit disappointing. Regardless, this is worth a purchase.
6. Iced Earth--Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1)

Iced Earth is not one of my favorite bands. Regardless of my charts, I do not like them that much. Theylre just good to listen to to pass time. That one recycled Schaffer riff got old over a decade ago, and it's back again on this album. But the reason this album is so great is only because of the vocal work of Tim Owens--he simply shines here! I love his vocals, and here is his best performance to date. I saw Iced Earth recently with Matt Barlow, and he was great too, but seeing Ripper would have probably been better. But back to the rest of the album. The guitarwork is typical by Schaffer standards, the bass is nonexistent, and the drums are just decent. Schaffer makes a nice attempt to sound epic with this album, but his mediocre guitar skills hold this album back from being epic. IF anything, the only truly epic moment is provided by Owens on the title track--the last 45 seconds are just pure brilliance. Still, the rest of the album is good, albeit unoriginal, and this Set Abominae concept is just stupid. And hearing Part 2 doesn't make it any better either--this is much better than 2008's conclusion to this horrible story. Still, just for Owens, this is Top 10 material.
7. Sybreed--Antares

This is a rarity--good modern industrial metal. their first album sounded like Fear Factory and Meshuggah blended together, and this continues that, but adds a little bit of Sybreed's own element that neither of the other two bands have. There are some very heavy parts here, but the electronic subtleties all across this album are great to hear. This is a more layered more mature release than their debut, and I really like it. The songs are all strong (albeit similar-sounding), and everything can be heard very well. Also, the French accentuation of some of the words is a nice little touch that makes this album a bit unique.
8. Dream Theater--Systematic Chaos

This may be one of DT's worst albums, but it's still Top 10-material. They're just that good! This is a very diverse album, but that is probably it's main flaw--the tracks don't flow well into each other thematically. "Constant Motion" is a failed attempt at a progressive thrash sounds, while "Forsaken" is commercial mediocrity. "The Dark Eternal Night" sounds like a B-Side from the "Train of Thought" album, but it's still pretty cool. The rest of the album ranges from mediocre to great, with the two-part "In The Presence of Enemies" song being the best part of the album. Clocking in at 25 minutes total, this will undoubtedly be compared to DT's other long songs, and in that department, ITPoE just doesn't stand up. It's great, but it doesn't even touch the likes of "Octavarium," which is one of my favorite songs ever. Still, this is a necessity for DT fans and still a good album.
9. Megadeth--United Abominations

With the exception of the first track, this isn't really thrash, but it's fun to listen to. The lyrics are awful, but otherwise, this is a solid Megadeth release that is comparable to their other recent albums. Nothing amazing here, but this is a good album.
10. Dethklok--The Dethalbum

I love humor, and I like Metalocalypse, so I was bound to like this album. This is straightforward melodic death metal with a very comedic approach (read as: gimmick), but this album is just lots of fun to listen to. It's 2009 and I still find this amusing, so this must have some lasting power.
And my least favorite albums of the year are:
Turisas--The Varangian Way (NOT REAL FOLK METAL)
Redemption--The Origins Of Ruin (THE MOST BORING PROGRESSIVE METAL ALBUM EVER MADE)
