Bueno sera la primera vez que hago un aporte de esta magnitud acá y espero sea de su agrado para aquellos que por casualidad se topen con mi cuenta.

Esta es una compilación de varios grupos clasificándolos según genero y aunque en algunos discos faltaron representativos del genero, no deja de ser muy bueno ya que nos da a conocer una muestra de otras bandas metaleras del genero que tocan. Seguro gustara a los metaleros que estamos presente acá, también este aporte puede servir a los que están iniciándose para conocer un poco mas del metal y sus diferentes ramas.

Larga Vida Al Metal!!!!

[This article was originally wrote for my now defunct 'zine Lunar Hypnosis. I've decided to go back and both omit and add some new entries to this writing as my opinions have changed since its original publishing in December of 2005.]

Black metal for some individuals is more than just a CD in their stereo or an mp3 on their iPod; for these select people black metal is a way of life that few truly follow. Black metal has been a strong presence in the underground metal scene for about fifteen years now and continues to grow. But with the scene ever growing over these fifteen years there have been some great albums and some terrible albums. The point of this article is to educate readers on what I believe to be some of the best black metal albums ever. You may not necessarily agree with everything I’ve said, but in case you haven’t heard these albums yet I can only give you my highest recommendation. In any case let me tell you how this article came to be.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine that is not so well-versed in black metal asked me a question, while we waited for our local metal store to open its doors. At first he told me he wanted to get more into black metal, and then asked what I thought the top ten best black metal albums were. Without much hesitation I quickly started to name a few albums that are very precious to me, but off the top of my head I couldn’t think of a solid ten albums that have changed my life and made me a stronger black metal fan. So with this question still sprawling around the back of my mind these past weeks, I decided to write a full editorial to perhaps educate people that are new to black metal and to introduce them to some of the gems in the genre that I believe to be among the best ever. To be completely forthright as possible, these are albums I couldn’t live without. So without further hindrance I give you ‘The Essential Black Metal Albums.’

Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky (Released 1991):
Amidst the bitter wintriness that was Norway back in 1991, Darkthrone after releasing a few demos and one album in the technical death metal style the past couple years, decided to take a new approach to their music. Slathered in black and white make up and inverted crosses; Fenriz, Zephyrous, and Nocturno Culto left death metal behind them, and thus the Norwegian black metal scene was set in action.

Incorporating the sounds of Celtic Frost & Bathory, the poetry of Venom (although highly refined and more intelligent than our drunken Englanders), plus with their own vicious melodicism; ‘A Blaze in the Northern Sky’ was their creation. An obvious inclusion in this article, Darkthrone’s sophomore album is the quintessence of what black metal is and was meant to be. Nocturno Culto’s malevolent voice shrieking throughout the recording, while wicked, perverse, rocking, buzzsaw guitar melodies allure the listeners ears, plus mid-paced to fast drumming, and a rehearsal like production that’s often refereed to as being raw or necro sounding. A Blaze in the Northern Sky is all this and so much more. At times sounding ridiculously slow, evil and atmospheric, while at other times fast paced and rocking and even going so far as to sound depressive in certain areas. Arguably the best black metal album ever, but then again Darkthrone inspired several others like Satyricon, Burzum, and Immortal who made equally impressive albums the following year. A Blaze in the Northern Sky is indeed one of the essential albums of black metal, but nonetheless the following two albums from Darkthrone were just as godly if not somewhat better in certain peoples minds. This album is the cornerstone of black metal and although it may appear rather harsh to those new to the genre, there isn’t any other album that could be a better starting point.

Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times (Released September, 1993):
A year after A Blaze in the Northern Sky was released and the scene had been set in motion, a young man by the name of Sigurd Wongraven (Satyr), founded Satyricon along with three others when he was just seventeen years old. A rough demo appeared in ’92, where shortly thereafter the other three members left the band. In came the fiend drummer known as Frost, and together Satyr and Frost recorded a second demo followed up by the astonishing debut ‘Dark Medieval Times.’

Satyricon took the sound and production style of Darkthrone and added in acoustic guitar passages, flutes, epic keyboard orchestrations, and even a greater deal of melody. Satyr’s guitar held a largely static, treble, raw tone to it, but you’d be hard pressed to find a guitarist that could create the same type of melodious evil that came out of this mans guitar. Behind the drum kit Frost was flawless, never missing a beat while thumping the drums to pieces. The songs were saturated with cruelty, but often times hit epic proportions and in several places were even very beautiful sounding. To think that these two were just teens when this album was made still astonishes me. The album held the same raw coldness and wickedness as Darkthrone’s second creation, but Dark Medieval Times was more accessible due to the added instruments and increase in melody, making it quite simply one of the best ever.

Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse (Released February 21st, 1994):
I can still remember my emotions several years ago playing this album for the first time and actually being so scared of it that I got about half way through and then placed the album on my CD shelf never to return to it again. I of course had bought the album when I was still new to black metal and previously had only heard more commercial black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, Covenant, and Cradle of Filth. However as time would pass and as I heard more black metal bands, I eventually came back to this album and under the right circumstances I was finally able to take in all it had to offer, and I absolutely loved it! Emperor was the initial black metal band to place a large emphasis on the keyboards and through them the band formed quite possibly the gloomiest evil freezing moods conceivable. While the keyboards were brooding with malevolence they also had a certain elegant charm to them that kept me and many others hooked for life and took our souls to the blackest realms of hell. Naturally there’s no forgetting the incredible guitar work or amazing drumming, though the raw production made them harder to decipher. Also one of the things that originally scared me (but later on I ended up enjoying) were Ihsahn’s vocals, which still to this day are among some of the best ever recorded. Plus the lyrics wrote by Ihsahn, Samoth, and Mortiis telling dark tales of nature, mysticism, and general evil are wrote in almost a poetic manner, which certainly was a nice break from the bands that just wrote about Satan. Unlike a lot of bands Emperor wasn’t influenced by any other bands they were the influencers, and forever shall ‘In the Nightside Eclipse’ be hailed as one of the grandest black metal albums for all infinity.

Ulver - Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler (Released 1994):
Formed in 1993 and highly influenced by the early Black metal hordes, this Norwegian band expanded the sound of black metal even a step further than Satyricon. The five person collective of Garm, Aiwarikiar, Skoll, Haavard, and Aismal took the grim Norwegian black metal sound and mixed it with folk music characteristics and added clearly sung vocals, acoustic guitars, flutes, piano, and wrote the albums lyrics entirely in some sort of primitive Norwegian language. Although only five songs and thirty four minutes long, ‘Bergtatt’ was intended to be a fairytale about a girl entering a forest and being taken down to hell by the evils of the forest (at least that’s what I’ve read). Ulver hit the listeners with harsh & raw but still melodic sounding guitars to even impressive guitar solos (which had rarely been seen in other black metal albums at the time). It was always interesting the way the band could play extremely fast and then suddenly switch to acoustic guitars or more melodious sounds nearly instantly. Garm’s vocals were also an exceptionally vital part of this recording, frequently switching between harsh black metal screams to delightfully clear operatic like vocals. The band even used some brief female vocals on the folky acoustic piece ‘Capitel IV: Een Stemme Locker.’ Through chaos and gorgeousness, Ulver produced one of the best black metal albums ever, and shaped a new genre within a relatively new genre, that we commonly call folk metal these days.

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (Released May 15th, 1994):
1994 was a big year in the black metal scene with Ulver, Emperor & Dimmu Borgir releasing their debut albums, in Austria Abigor was unleashing their massive debut release ’Verwüstung / Invoke the Dark Age,’ and Mayhem after existing for eleven years already had finally released their debut ‘De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.’ Meanwhile the legend killer himself Varg Vikernes had released his third and most supreme blackened offering to date, namely ‘Hvis Lyset tar oss (translation: If the light takes us).’ Although only four songs long, Varg’s song writing suddenly reached lengthy proportions with the shortest song being just under eight minutes while the longest clocked in at fourteen. The album is quite possibly one of the most atmospheric, epic, and chilling albums released in the early days of the Norwegian black metal scene. Glorious recurring guitar riffs, atmospheric keyboards, Varg’s banshee screams, and an unbelievably pitch-black frozen bloodcurdling mood that never again was to be out done either by Varg or any other pretender. Truly Burzum’s most cohesive and most brilliant work ever.

Abigor - Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom) (Released August 1st, 1995):
By 1993 when Abigor formed and released their first demos, things were getting more active in the black metal scene with lots of bands popping up all over the Scandinavian area and even a few across the ocean in the USA & Canada. But who would have expected little Austria to breed one of the finest, most artistic, and unique black metal bands ever?! ‘Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom)’ is largely considered Abigor’s finest moment in their ten year existence, and in recent years it has become my favorite Abigor release as well (though all Abigor releases are stunning to me). Abigor’s music has always been rooted in the more brutal side of the genre however Nachthymnen is probably their most melodic and most complex album they released. Their style is defined as an intricate assortment of hectic trebly melodious guitars, brutal technical drumming, malevolent screams, and fascinating lyrics, with a slight usage of acoustic guitars, keyboards, and female vocals plus a sturdy darkened epic feeling present. Abigor was clearly influenced by the Norwegian scene, yet throughout this album never do they sound like any Norwegian band, and ultimately made one of the best black metal albums ever.

Mörk Gryning - Tusen år har gått... (Released 1995):
At the time of this release the two members Jonas and Peter Nagy (AKA Draakh Kimera) were just fifteen and eighteen year old kids, which is really something considering how impressive the musicianship and overall feeling of this recording is. On this recording the band had many fast blasting black metal sections, but also some incredibly memorable slower melodic parts as well a few acoustic sections, short synth flourishes, clear vocals, and the usual fast drumming and grim raspy blackened screams. What’s more the album is a concept album centering around four horsemen of the apocalypse and the fall of heaven through the eyes of Nidas, one of the riders. 'Tusen år har gått...' is certainly one of the more overlooked black metal albums from the mid-90's, but nevertheless it remains a memorable one for those that have heard it.<p>

Dimmu Borgir - Stormblåst (Released January 25th, 1996):
These days Norway’s Dimmu Borgir can’t be considered a black metal band anymore, but back in 1996 they released one highly impressive black metal recording called ‘Stormblåst.’ Back in these early days DB’s music was considerably different, sounding a bit like mid-paced black metal with Norwegian lyrics. Stormblåst has always held a very wintry ambiance to it, making it one of the perfect albums to listen to during the winter months. Of course one of the other interesting aspects of this recording is the large usage of synthesizers & piano, which gave the album a very beautiful feeling, but you can certainly sense some sort of dark and poignant presence in these instruments too. All of the lyrics were written in the Norwegian language which added a very mystifying existence to the album while they were being screamed out. The guitars were mostly mid-paced and harmonious sounding; as well the drums were mostly blast beat free. As it stands though this is Dimmu’s finest hour and is indeed another essential black metal album.

Nokturnal Mortum - Goat Horns (Released 1997):
By 1997 the black metal scene was gaining in popularity all around the world, and was hugely popular in Europe due to the incidents in the early 90’s in Norway. Still far away in the unknown land of Kharkov, Ukraine, something wickedly evil was brewing. There name was Nokturnal Mortum and in 1997 they released the immaculate ‘Goat Horns’ MC via MetalAgen/Morbid Noizz Records. However it wasn’t until a year later though that the rest of the world heard the album when The End & Nuclear Blast Records re-released it on CD. NM instantly gained followers of their implausible style of speedy melodic black metal with epic symphonic synths and strong folk & Celtic influences. Goat Horns was like a mix of Dark Medieval Times, Bergtatt, and In the Nightside Eclipse all flawlessly pooled together to form one of the most stunning black metal releases ever. Goat Horns has one of the coldest atmospheres you’ll ever hear in black metal music, always making the listener feel as if there out roving about on a cold snowy day or lost in some frigid woodland. The synths are one of the most vital parts of this recording sounding absolutely beautiful at all times, but constantly very sinister, grand, and symphonic like too. The band also made great use of folk & Celtic music in this recording, which at the time was still fairly fresh to black metal, and to unite both of them was something exceptional indeed. The guitars were also immense sounding although slightly hard to hear at times due to the rough production the album had, and Knjaz Varggoth’s vocals are certainly some of the most furious screams ever recorded. From the epic synth introduction ‘Black Moon Overture’ to ‘Veles Scrolls’ to the folky Kolyada and the outro piece ‘Eternal Circle,’ Goat Horns is a masterpiece the whole way through.

Covenant - Nexus Polaris (Released March 24, 1998):
Largely considered as an all-star album as it featured musicians from such bands as Dimmu Bogir, Mayhem, Troll, Arcturus, and Cradle of Filth; Covenant's 'Nexus Polaris' is often times not even considered a black metal recording at all due to the popularity of the album in the late 90's. Despite the would be true cult fans of this genre's objections towards this album I still find this sophomore recording from Covenant to be a stunning and memorable album even to this day. On Nexus Polaris this six piece band (Nagash, Blackheart, Astennu, Hellhammer, Sverd, and Sarah Jezebel Deva) performed highly melodic black metal with tons of great guitar riffs, killer solos, beautiful and dark synth/piano work, female operatic backing vocals, and a nearly perfect production job to boot; thus creating what some would think of as poser black metal, while personally I see it as nothing more than a fantastic melodic black metal album that got me started on the right path several years ago...

Hel - Orloeg (Released 1999):
A German duo of Andreas Walther and Markus Skroch; Andreas formed Hel back in the mid 90’s as a means to create epic black metal with his deep fascination for Nordic mythology. Hel may not be the most pure sounding black metal band as they draw lots of influences from the folk & Viking metal genres, but there’s certainly no denying the strong black metal influence in their work either. Hel’s music on this recording was indeed very heroic sounding, often times switching between this epic sound to speedy black metal styles, even to slower atmospheric territories. Also what made Hel stand out was that there music was melodic, and their songs featured lots of great guitar riffs & solos. Andreas’ vocals were performed in a raspy black metal style, as well epic Viking singing, and sporadic clearly spoken passages, all in the German language. Additionally there are samples of ancient battles being fought, nature sounds, and also the usage of a mouth harp, acoustic guitars, grand keyboard orchestrations, and piano. Hel’s ‘Orloeg’ album is a truly underground gem that should be heard by all appreciators of epic black metal music.

Windir - 1184 (Released November 19th, 2001):
Of course when it comes to Windir I could have easily picked anyone of their albums since there all spectacular, but 1184 was the first album I heard from the band and the one I value the most these days. Windir was formed as Valfar’s (Terje Bakken) solo project back in 1994 when he was just fifteen years old, and in 1997 the debut album ‘Sóknardalr’ surfaced and introduced the world to Windir. Two years later the legendary ‘Arntor’ album was released, and in 2001 Valfar recruited a full band to play with him, and ‘1184’ was the result. 1184 was based on ‘The battle at Fimreite’ a well-known event in Norwegian history. With this album Windir offered up speedy to mid-paced incredibly melodious black metal with Viking and folk overtones. Song for song the listener was bombarded with unbelievable head banging riffs & solos while Valfar screamed out his lyrics about Vikings, war Norwegian history, and myths. Valfar also played the accordion on the first three Windir albums, which was something that had never been done in black metal before, but alongside the orchestral synths and intense black metal it gave the music a very unique feeling for sure. Unfortunately though after the bands fourth album ‘Likferd’ in 2003, Valfar passed away in early 2004 in a tragic death; and with him Windir was buried. Windir however is one of the few bands out there that never released a bad album or even a bad song for that matter, and indeed I will keep Windir in mind eternally.

Sear Bliss - Forsaken Symphony (Released October 19, 2002):
Since my discovery of the Hungarian band Sear Bliss back in late 2002, Sear Bliss has remained one of the most original and easily one of my favorite bands ever. Although each of their albums have sounded slightly different (mostly because of the production) from each other all of them have made use of heavy atmospheric synth orchestration and a brass instrument section that on this release consisted of a trombone, baritone, and tuba, which to me created a darkened atmosphere that rivals and in some cases blows away the early Norwegian masterpieces. 'Forsaken Symphony' is sometimes very dark and haunting, but at other times its very relaxing, beautiful, and mystical sounding too. The fact that the guitars also have the classic black metal chainsaw effect in place just adds to this recording even if you generally prefer cleaner production jobs. All in all Forsaken Symphony remains as this bands opus and I surely wouldn't hesitate to say its the finest thing to ever come out of Hungry (musically or otherwise).

Sin Origin - In the Presence of a Dread Magician (Released June, 2005):
It took a while but in 2005 an American black metal band hailing from Canfield, Ohio, released one of the greatest black metal recordings ever, titled ‘In the Presence of a Dread Magician.’ The duo of Funeris & Nemesis began Sin Origin in 1999, recorded two demos over the next couple of years, but didn’t publicly release them until 2004. The demos were merely just a teaser, because they didn’t show an overly creative style of black metal, yet I don’t think anyone had any idea what sort of blackened evil ingenuity the band was preparing for us with their debut album. Only five songs long and clocking in at sixty seven minutes, Sin Origin wrote unbelievably extensive songs built around harmonious guitar riffs, technical drumming, and harsh grimly screamed vocals. Sin Origin’s music can sound extremely fast and angry, while at other times to a more rocking thrash metal style, to even a doom-ish like pace in certain areas. What's more with a decent production job and interesting lyrics there’s simply no denying how magnificent this recording is. There’s no clear way to define In the Presence of a Dread Magician exactly, other than to call this simply one of the best black metal albums ever!
