The Bubbly Green and Blue Festival 2010

On the 26th Feb 2010 we will be appearing at The Bubbly Green and Blue, 'a four-day festival of eclectic ‘water music’ influenced by shipwrecks, rivers, waves and lighthouses…' at King's Place, London.
Our show will combine the music of Catchers and The Sleeping Years with members of both bands appearing alongside a five-piece brass section. The songs will be performed in special arrangements by John Jermy and Nick Drake-collaborator Robert Kirby.

Also appearing over the four days will be Philip Jeck, Janek Schaefer, Hauschka, Hildur Gudnadottir, ISAN, Samphire Band, Iarla O’Lionaird, The London Snorkelling Team, Paper Cinema and The Willkommen Orchestra.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - XVI REFLECTIONS ON CLASSICAL MUSIC (DECCA)

Although released on Universal’s classical imprint, the somewhat-deceptively named XVI Reflections on Classical Music is far more interested in exploring tangents of ambient music, IDM and innovative drone than it is in channelling composers who worked before the 20th century. One thing the title does get right is the “reflections” part; XVI gathers previous work from 16 artists, from as far back as 1997. It seems that most of the tracks, in some form, were taken from older releases, with the exception of Hauschka’s enjoyable track “Zuhause”.

Lawrence kicks off the compilation with his beautiful and sweeping “The Daydream”, which appeared in more upbeat form (under a different title) on his new album Until Then Goodbye, before segueing into handsomely synthesized and introspective tunes from Japanese composers Takeo Toyama and Ryuichi Sakamoto, who appears with Berlin-based wunderkind Carsten Nicolai (as Alva Noto), on the sombre track “Moon”. Soon, the ruminative reverie is interrupted by the thumping inertia of “Zauberberg IV”, from Cologne techno godfather Wolfgang Voigt under his Gas moniker.

Shortly thereafter, Final Fantasy’s “He Poos Clouds” makes a nonsensical appearance; the trite violin exorcism stands out sorely amongst the thoughtful and provocative works of artists such as Ryan Teague and Mexican electronic experimentalist Murcof. Track 12 brings us three melodic minutes of dialogue and piano-driven beauty ” from English composer Max Richter, who contributed the brilliant “Arboretum” from his 2004 debut The Blue Notebooks. It is the collection’s highlight.

This is intelligent music for a sad day -- even if one has come across a few of these heartfelt songs of substance before.
