  • Q&A About My Ding A Ling

    Jul 11 2008, 0h55 por viker

    1. How did you get into 31?
    Magnolia Electric Co.

It wasn't until 2007 when the band released Sojourner. I had liked some of what I'd heard from Songs:Ohia and thought I'd give this a shot too. Despite liking Sojourner pretty well, I still haven't dug much into their back catalog.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    Leonard Cohen

Probably chelsea hotel. Or TocarHallelujah - though I don't know if it was his version or not.

    3. What's your favourite lyric by 29?
    The Beatles

    Meh, I dunno.

"And when the broken hearted people
    Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, Let It Be."

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
    The Kinks

    Kinda Kinks

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
    Elephant Micah

Physically? Zero. Digital? I think 12.

    6. What is your favourite song by 50?
    Violent Femmes

    TocarKiss Off

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
    Sam Cooke

Definitely. TocarA Change Is Gonna Come - there is so much emotion in his voice and its heartbreaking to know that not long after the album was released he would pass away.

    8. What is your favourite song by 15?
    Gino Washington

    "Around the Town"

    9. What is your favourite song by 5?
    Dead Moon

They've got so many awesome songs, but I'll go with the first one I ever heard... "TocarIt's Ok"

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    The Mountain Goats

Eh, not really but I guess I like singing along to "Best Ever death Metal band"

    11. What is your favourite album by 40?
    The Sonics

Pretty easy considering they didn't really have many albums and because Here Are The Sonics is one of my favorite albums ever by anyone!

    12. What is your favourite song by 10?
    Otis Redding

Now THAT'S a tough one. Fuck it. Three way tie. :P TocarI've Been Loving You Too Long, TocarPain In My Heart, TocarThese Arms Of Mine

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
    Sunburned Hand of the Man

Well unfortunately most of the time when I'm listening to music I'm sitting at the computer or on the couch, and since SHOTM isn't really party music or dance music or anything like that, there's not really some awesome memory involving them besides hearing "Earth Do Eagles Do" and thinking, "wow this fucking rocks!".

    14. What is your favourite song by 37?
    Oblivians

TocarBad Man. There's a bunch of other great ones I'm probably forgetting, but that one is the first that comes to mind.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
    Jeff Tweedy

Well despite the only reason he's even that high on my list is because of Retta, I still really like his solo version of "Black Eye".

    16. How many times have you seen 21 live?
    Bloodshot Bill

Zero of course. I've only been to like 3 concerts ever and that crazy bastard was not one of them. I'm sure he puts on one hell of a show though, and if for some reason I ever make it up to Canada maybe I can.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
    Dump

Words - it's the first song on International Airport, and since that's the first album I'd ever heard, I'm sure that's it.

    18. What is your favourite album by 11?
    Pavement

Major Leagues EP - their covers are pretty great.

    19. Who is a favourite member of 1?
    Hasil Adkins

Ha! My answer to that would be Hasil Adkins.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    Scott H Biram

See number 16. Pretty much word for word, except that Biram isn't in Canada, but rather Texas.

    21. What is a good memory involving 45?
    Amanaz

They only ever released one album as far as I know and I didn't know anything about them until Shadoks reissued "Africa" earlier this year, but the first time I heard "Khala My Friend" I was floored. It's times like that that I realize how much I love discovering new music.

    22. What is your favourite song by 16?
    Mike Cooper

Another easy one. "TocarThink She Knows Me Now". First heard it on a mix and it's become one of my favorite songs ever since.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
    Long John Hunter

Tocarel paso rock - similar to the answer regarding Dump, it was the first track on Ooh Wee Pretty Baby!, and thus the first song I heard.

    24. What is your favourite album by 26?
    Elizabeth Cotten

Folksongs & Instrumentals with Guitar. Such a great album too!

    25. What is your favourite song by 18?
    King Uszniewicz and His Uszniewicztones

Oh boy! cry on my shoulder is a killer and I also get the simple phrase Yukkum Yukkum stuck in my head all the time.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
    Low

Not entirely sure. It might be TocarDinosaur Act - which is a title was I was vaguely familiar with before hearing it, but it could very well be the opener to the same album - TocarSunflower.

    27. What is your favourite lyric by 3?
Wilco. F that since it really shouldn't be there to begin with. I'll take the next one in line: Sam Cooke

"Oh there been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will"

    28. What is your favourite song by 2?
    Michael Hurley

TocarSweedeedee - hands down. Cat Power's version of it is how I was introduced to Hurley in originally, but even still I love that song to no end. Very very very close runner up would be TocarSlurf Song.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    Eels

Probably something from tv or whatever like TocarYour Lucky Day In Hell or Novocaine For The Soul, though I didn't really get into listening to them until around the time Soul Jacker came out.

    30. What is your favourite song by 8?
    Charlie Feathers

Honky Tonk Kind - a slobberin' sappy country song about lost love from Charlie fuckin' Feathers (not that he didn't sing TONS of song about similar subject matter, its just that this one in particular I really enjoy)!

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    The Flying Burrito Brothers

Well seeing as Gram Parsons died nearly 10 years before I was born, that would be zero.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
    Yo La Tengo

Of course! Put on Fakebook and songs like Griselda, Here Comes My Baby and Emulsified will get me cheery in no time!

    33. What is you favourite album by 12?
    Andre Williams

Movin' On With... Greasy & Explicit Soul Movers 1956 to 1970 - has all the hits and more! Funky as hell.

    34. What is the worst song by 34?
    Misfits

Just pick a song from American Psycho or Famous Monsters. There's a whole slew of 'em there.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 46?
    Larry Williams

TocarBony maronie for sure. I was probably less than 10 or something and probably heard it on a movie more than likely.

    36. What is you favourite album by 42?
    The Mummies

Never Been Caught. For Sure. In my top 5 favorite Garage Rock albums.

    37. How many times have you seen 39 live?
    Junkpile Jimmy

Same as then answer to Bloodshot Bill & Scott H. Biram. It's funny how I keep getting asked this about garage-y blues punk one man bands. Seriously though, does anyone even know who Junkpile Jimmy really is?

    38. What is your favourite album by 36?
    Don Covay

That would be the 2fer album "Mercy/See Saw" - its the only thing I've got, and its awesome. Love just about every song.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
    Eliott Smith

I think it was Needle in the Hay and hearing it on The Royal Tenenbaums. Not long after we bought Either/Or and listened the fuck out of it.

    40. What is your favourite album by 7?
    Kimya Dawson

Hating on her seems to be the cool thing to do nowadays, but I don't give a fuck. I really like her. Favorite album? Probably Remember That I Love You - but that might be just because it's her most recent album and what I've listened to the most of lately.

I've seen several variations on this exercise, so I thought I'd try one:

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Here is my list of unique artists:

    Bruce Springsteen
    Jackson Browne
    Van Morrison
    Neil Young
    Bob Dylan
    Paul Simon
    Tom Petty
    Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
    Townes Van Zandt
    Rodney Crowell
    Joe Ely
    Jerry Jeff Walker
    Steve Earle
    Billy Joe Shaver
    Robert Earl Keen

  • Bob Log III is my hero

    Set 30 2007, 5h40 por OneDrunkWalking

Thu 27 Sep – Bob Log III

"If I were not One Drunk, I should wish to be Bob Log III"

This quote is adapted from one by Alexander the Great in reference to the philosopher Diogenes....

The concept of a one man band (sorry, ladies) has always appealed to me; no bandmates to argue with = total creative control. Bob Log III embodies this vision in every way. But he goes beyond the now ubiquitous laptop performer by sticking with his helmet-mounted tele-microphone, slide guitar, and foot drums, keeping it much more vital and interesting than Greg Somebody who opened for him with a 20-minute drone that was almost unbearable to many folks present, myself and two friends included.

Mr. Log is not afraid of natural interaction with the audience. On the contrary, he welcomes the opportunity to meet strange new people (especially females) and invite them into his strange new live musical experience . His flair and panache are irresistible, and he cranks out bluesy stompers with reckless abandon. His most well-known song is called "Boob Scotch", and though no one had produced his drink of choice yet, someone in the crowd stepped up to insert their nipple into his PBR. After that the climax of the evening was when he called two fine young Burlington ladies up to sit on each of his knees while he played a song about defecation. The young ladies were very entertained by this.

Bob is energy made flesh. His style aspires to and might equal that of Hasil Adkins, another musician I was unfamiliar with until I entered this Last.fm experiment.
    He is genuine and unapologetic.

  • Rock this Place Apart!!! - the mix redo

    Ago 31 2007, 14h16 por ACKthehack

    Jim was going out tonight.

Wasn't going to be the same old thing cruising through Sam's Drive-in restaurant in Billy's hot rod him all worried about that big ass pompadour nope this was different man. It was going to be the same old sock hop deal dancing around and such. There was going to be a barnstorming concert with a bunch of his favorite rockers. You see later people would say these was the good old days.

But everyone seemed so scared of the commies cause they wanted to give stuff away for free and he never got nothing free in his life so maybe people were mad cause if they wanted getting any why should someone else. He didn't know you see his friend Billy was older got back a few years from this Korea thing. Jim would get his in Asia too I am sure but he just didn't know it back then.

Jim just knew he had to hide his Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley albums from his dad that didn't like him listening to that uppity negro music. And Jim never knew why it was such a sin to be uppity. Hell, he liked getting uppity every once in a while.

They ain't got much and everyone knows it too. His Daddy fixes cars down at the filling station and he can tell when he gets mad at momma cause of the grease stain and red marks on the side of her face. The house they live in was some of the housing they built right after the war on the wrong side of all the tracks that count. And they scrape by. Jim knows that his fate too just to scrape through life and he still likes getting uppity every once in a while no matter what his pop says.

You see Jim got into his daddy's liquor after a binge so the old man didn't have any idea he lost any and his flask is full and Jill was going to be at the show. She had the hots for one of the singers at this show and when she starts screaming and going nuts for those fellas well it means better times for Jim later on.

Only thing he ain't got no car. He has one of those 1951 Indian Chief's and Jill's dad thinks he is a motorcycle thug or something. Seems a lot of folks are worried about the juvenile deliquency but he ain't bad he just looks that way is the thing and he can't help that.

He just hopes that Buddy Holly fella is as good in concert as he is on the old 45s.
