This could possibly be the best soul song ever written, besides "What's Goin' On." I could listen to this over and over again! Teddy P...one of the most distinctive and soulful voices in music!

as long as there is humans there will be war, we do not learn from past mistakes, our eyes will open when we kill ourselves with greed and hatred for all, this world has all we need to survive but us as humans want more. more and more, we are never satisfied with what we have, se DO need to listen.

i'm drunk so this should be good. uganda is just one of a shit ton of african countries going to shit right now. 300,000 dead in somalia and we can't even get aid into the country. we've been aware of it for years. aids, hiv, malaria, starvation--we've been raising awareness for this shit for decades. in fact, awareness for those things has PEAKED, without a solution being reached. it's all publicity, getting your pretty face out there speaking out for something good, without real meaning behind it. hooray for woman's rights--we could only restrict the rights of over half our species for so long, that was inevitable. civil rights was a fantastic accomplishment, i will give you that. race relations are still far from perfect though. i live on the eastern shore, i walk among the racist fucks keeping the dream from becoming a reality. it's their life, it's ingrained in their social system, it's a part of their lives, their families, their culture. no awareness will change that

Awareness LEADS to change. WIthout awareness there is no need for change! If women weren't aware of how oppressed they were, they would not have had the desire to fight for their rights. The same goes for the African American community. And what about Uganda? Up until a few years ago westerners were not AWARE of the situation. Since being made aware of it, however, millions of dollars have been raised to build schools, build orphanages, and peace treaties have begun.

awareness changes nothing. change just happens, it's forced upon you regardless of awareness. this is the only change that has worked throughout human history. realizing that the world is going to shit will not change the fact that the world is going to shit. enough people have been placed in enough of a daily shit-filled rhythm that nothing short of totalitarian change will be able to do anything about it. sit-ins and marches and acid and sex won't change anything.

Awareness starts movements. Without awareness there would be no movement to do anything--to end poverty, to end social injustices, to bring about equality in the workforce. Awareness is the beginning of change. Hippies wanted to change, and to do so they had to make the world aware that it is, in fact, going to shit.

awareness in itself is nothing. results are the only things that matter in this world. the hippie movement resulted in nothing but hippies and the apathetic realization that the world is going to shit.

"The Things They Carried" is a fantastic piece of literature, I'll grant you that. It's touching and beautiful while still showing the horrid effects of what life in war can do to young men and women. Now back to our discussion. I did not say that the hippies were the only group to protest the atrocities of Vietnam. The media did as well, with a daily death count on national television for the first time and with more violent pictures than ever in newspapers and magazines. The media gave people the visual recognition of the horrors of war, while the hippies gave people a collective voice and a group to back them and their beliefs. And I did not make the bold and incorrect statement that racial equality has been achieved. No equality has. The hippies did not *only* fuel as well as make great music. They got people concerned with those less fortunate, the environment, peace, etc. If that's a failure to you, then we need to have a much different discussion. Good evening, Matt.
