  • My Christmas-playlist

    Dez 23 2008, 0h19 por Gjervan

You may notice that the Cristmas{/tag]-relevance in some of these songs are disputable at best. The reason is that I have included general 'winter'-songs, though only those who give me a feeling of the "right time" of winter, in that they are 'dark' (as in night, not mood) and about the snow "coming, not already here". So no Tori Amos - TocarWinter or Aztec Camera - Walk Out to Winter; they can wait for the Easter-playlist I plan to compilate soon.

Lumsk - Nidvisa: (literally translated:) the Song of Mock directed towards the commercialism of Christmas. Released to gain funds and attention to Gi oss jula tilbake!, a movement to counter this.

Jokke & Valentinerne - Her kommer vinteren (Here comes the Winter): A song to celebrate the end of summer and its pressure to be out in the sun.

Mitch Miller - Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!: Of course.

Chris de Burgh - TocarWhen Winter Comes: General winter-song.

Tristania - December Elegy: More general winter-music, but at least it has 'december' in the title.

Lumsk - Åsgårdsreia: About 'åsgårdsreia', a pagan myth surviving into Christian times about a host of undead and goblins riding around and pillaging farms which was hanging after in their holiday-preperations.

Sarah Silverman - Give the Jew Girl Toys: Happy Hanukkah ;)

Finntroll - Kyrkovisen: Not even 'general winter', but it gives me that feeling... and it fits so nice with all the other heathendom on this playlist.

Cathedral - TocarBlue Light: At least it sounds like it's about some perverted occult Yuletide celebration.

Spike Jones - All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Theeth: I get mine next year.

Chris Rea - Driving Home for Christmas: A nice classic.

Wham - Last Christmas: Homos? On my Saviour's birthday?

Ashley Tisdale - TocarLast Christmas: ... and they got covered by a Jew. Although it may fit her better, since Jesus didn't really live up to the hype; "Wait, I was expecting a new King David! Who is this pinko commie? Fuck it, I'm back to Judaism!"

The Beach Boys - TocarLittle Saint Nick: But he is always depicted as fat..?

Bob Rivers - I Saw Mommy Fucking Santa Claus: Well, since Mommy and Daddy thought little Bobby was asleep, they would do much more than just kissing.

Bob Rivers - Santa's Whore: St. Nicholas once saved three sisters from prostitution, but this one slipped trough...

Bob Rivers - I Am Santa Claus: One have to ask; why didn't Black Sabbath do this from the beginning.

Chris de Burgh - TocarA Spaceman Came Travelling (versions from both : Spanish Train and Other Stories and High on Emotion; Live from Dublin): Best Christmas-song ever.

Danger Danger - Naughty Naughty Xmas: Do you know why Santa is so jolly? He know where all the naughty girls live...

Eartha Kitt - TocarSanta Baby: ... so no point in trying to be nice.

    The Go-Go's - I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek: CE-LE-BRA-TE!!!

Hans Rotmo - Vårres jul (album): A wonderful album meant to focus on the pre-Christian traditions of Norwegian Yuletide. Includes the classic Vårres jul, the near-metal Åsgårdsreia (heavier than the mentioned same-titled song by Lumsk) and the delightful anti-communistic (if you ignore the irony, that's it) Helvete.

Heather Dale - This Endris Night: Most known as the soundtrack to those medival ytmnds, this is actually an anciant Christmas Carol.

The Jackson 5 - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus: If it was the Bob Rivers-version, that might have explained something about Michael Jackson.

Travellin' Strawberries - Songs from THE JULEKALENDER (album): The soundtrack from the "countdown"-TVseries The Julekalender.

Jimmy McGriff - TocarI Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus: Do I have to many versions of this song?

John Mellencamp - TocarI Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus: Yes, I do.

José Feliciano - TocarFeliz Navidad: Another one that is brought forth once a year.

Judy Garland - TocarSomewhere Over the Rainbow: From the holiday-classic the Wizard of Oz.

King Diamond - TocarChristmas: From one of his horror-musicals/concept-albums, with this number taking place during... well, Christmas.

King Diamond - TocarNo Presents for Christmas: Not from any concept-album... Wait, King Diamond doing something NOT conceptual?

Kinky Friedman - TocarThey Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore: Maybe more of a Easter-song, but Santa Claus IS mentioned... as the real killer of Christ. Funny stab at commercialism or desperate attempt to blame someone else??

Kurt Ravn - Nu Tændes Tusind Julelys: Standard for Scandinavian Christmas-concerts.

Luca Turilli - King of the Nordic Twilight (album): The whole album, with its cover-art, classical elements and fairytale/fantastic themes just seems so... Yule.

Manowar - Silent Night/Stille Nacht: A metal-band doing classic carols... without mock or malice... in original German? I retract all my homophobic and antisemittic statements.

Judas Priest - TocarEvening Star: Correction; I retract my antisemittic statements.

Martin Brygmann - Jul I Valhal (album): The soundtrack for another countdown-series, about two kids helping the Aesir to stop Ragnarok. The best song is of course the rap TocarLokes Rapsody. A pity didn't have the impact on nsbm it should have, and they continue playing their Negro metal...
What? Isn't that what 'black' in black metal refers too?

mc chris - Fuckin Up My Christmas: Comedy rap from nerdcore-rapper.

Monty Python - TocarBrian Song: About the birth of our Saviour... Brian... Always Look on the Bright Side of Life is more of an Easter-song, however.

Monty Python - TocarChristmas in Heaven: Where else?

Nick Cave - The Word Made Flesh: Ramblin' on for 16 minutes.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - TocarTupelo: If Elvis Presley was Jesus... and Jesus was that badass the Jews are waiting for.

Nora Brockstedt - TocarJulekveldsvisa: Beloved Norwegian carol by Alf Prøysen.

The Pogues - TocarFairytale of New York: COnsidered by many to be THE Christmas song.

Saint Vitus - TocarJack Frost: 'Cause everything is better with doom...

    Smokie - A Spaceman Came Travelling: CdeB-cover.

Spinal Tap - TocarChristmas With the Devil: versions from both Christmas with the Devil and Break Like the Wind, in addition to Christmas With The Devil [Scratch Mix]

Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis: getting tired of the holiday now.

Dr. Demento - The 12 Pains Of Christmas: Gathering of the family... I've never got what's so great about it, they just nag on you so you miss all the good Holiday-Specials on TV :(

"Weird Al" Yankovic - TocarChristmas At Ground Zero: But this sounded worse...

ABBA - Happy New Year: ... and it is over for this time, and a whole year untill next time... well, at least 11 months.

  • A cultural pilgrimage to Oslo

    Mai 20 2008, 14h05 por Gjervan

Anyone brought here by a link in my Norwegian 'general' blogg may have noticed I was quite exited about both Det Norske Teater's showing of Bertolt Brecht/Kurt Weill's the Threepenny Opera and the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds-concert in Oslo Spektrum. I have finally been to Oslo and seen both shows, and now I'm back in Trondheim I finally have the time to write about it.

Starting with the Threepenny Opera, I really liked it. Although I have never seen it before (only heard the songs), I understand certain criticisms of the direction of the showing, as it did not really tell me what Brecht wanted to say 75 years ago. On the other hand, it could be because my political views are a bit to the right of those of Brecht and years of listening to Hans Rotmo have made me a bit vaccinated against musical propaganda from the left.
To be honest, it was Weill's music that really atracted me, not Brecht's literature (though the lyrics is such a great part of the songs it is hard to say who is the real genius of Brecht/Weill). Oh, and Paul Ottar Haga stars in it.
The songs were of course translated to Norwegian, and I am one of those who normally do not like Norwegian translations (eg. I found TocarMack the Knife a bit silly). However, it was good to finally find out what Pirate Jenny really was about, and the racist lines in The Cannon Song was made a wee bit worse in Norwegian (the language of Burzum :P)
The highlight of the show was not the cast, but actually a woman on the first row with a bit 'slow development' that provided. In one scene were Mackie (Haga) rose up from a bathtub, she startet laughing, and soon she had the whole audience laughing with/at her. The actress playing Polly (Heidi Gjermundsen Broch) struggled to repress her laughter, while poor Haga - not suprising - did not look that happy. Maybe as well that he only showed his rear, which actually disappointed me a bit (I hoped to see Haga's penis IRL in that scene; he had no trouble showing it off in Peer Gynt).
An old classy woman sitting next to my cousin had a bit more sophisticated taste, so I wonder what she was doing there at all; she was shocked every time a nasty word was said, and flipping through the programme during the 'sex'-scenes.

Nick Cave was AWESOME. TocarThe Ship Song, TocarTupelo, TocarThe Mercy Seat and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! was amongst the songs they played. He managed to start sing-alongs with TocarPapa Won't Leave You, Henry and The Lyre of Orpheus. TocarInto My Arms was done with only Cave on the piano and one of the drummers, and as requested (during half the gig) by the audience, they closed with Stagger Lee. Amongst the few negative things were their performance of TocarRed Right Hand and that they never played TocarJack the Ripper, which it sounded like they were going to start playing a lot of times.

Just some (semi-)relevant tags; Louis Armstrong, Robbie Williams, Lotte Lenya, Stan Ridgway, Nick Cave in Oslo, Frank Sinatra, Ute Lemper, Westlife, Sting, Litfiba.
