  • Seasick Steve in de Vooruit (19/11/2009)

    Nov 20 2009, 12h02 por lee_malone

Thu 19 Nov – Seasick Steve

Miss Li. Göteborgs Kulturkalas, Gothenburg, August 12 2008

Well. Miss Li along with Bruce Springsteen has pretty much been the soundtrack of my summer. I love her music, her voice, her simple piano playing and of course her dresses... The music is very simple and maybe even naive at times but what makes it interesting is all the influences from pretty much every genre over the last century, everything from jazz, blues, cabaret, gypsy music, motown, country... She even "borrowed" the title and some lyrics from Hank Williams' Why Don't You Love Me for her own song with the same name... that's cool in my book.

While the rain was pouring down Miss Li hammered through her hits with lots of energy, TocarLet her go, I'm Sorry He's Mine, Why Don't You Love Me, TocarOh Boy the great Leave My Man Alone and two of my favorites, the jazzy TocarBackstabber lady and the bluesy TocarHard loved man and a couple of more... and of course ending with a furious version of TocarMiss Li. I like the studio albums but she's even better live, it's wonderful to see her hammering away on the piano and almost falling off the chair at times. She use her voice a lot more too, screaming like Janis Joplin at times. Which is a very good thing.

I would have liked to hear more jazz/blues songs like TocarGive it to me, Don't try to fool me and Not the one I need... But she just got to play for 40 minutes so I guess there was no time to slow things down. But it was a great, fun (but too short) show that made us forget about the pouring rain for a while.

  • Nick Cave's Jukebox again & His drunken sing-a-long with David McComb + extras

    Out 4 2009, 14h50 por BlackCoffeeDuck

    Nick Cave's Jukebox again
Another CD set of songs which have inspired Nick Cave over the years is going on the market. This is the third this year and the fifth overall. The first two were Original Seeds way back in 1998 and the follow up Original Seeds, Volume 2 in 2004. I would rate the first Original Seeds very highly just because there was nothing like it before but now that is very different.

    Original Seeds - Track listing:
    1. Tim Rose - TocarLong Time Man
    2. Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps - TocarCat Man
    3. Leonard Cohen - TocarAvalanche
    4. Karen Dalton - TocarKatie Cruel
    5. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - TocarHammer Song
    6. Tom Jones - Weeping Annaleah
    7. The Loved Ones - Sad Dark Eyes
    8. Scott Walker - TocarThe Big Hurt
    9. John Lee Hooker - Tupelo Blues
    10. Lefty Frizzell - TocarThe Long Black Veil
    11. Johnny Cash - The Folk Singer
    12. Odetta - TocarAnother Man Done Gone
    13. Blind Willie Johnson - TocarI'm Gonna Run to the City of Refuge
    14. Edwin Hawkins Singers - TocarOh Happy Day
    15. Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je t'aime...moi non plus
    16. Isaac Hayes - TocarBy The Time I Get To Phoenix
I would still rate this one the best out of them all. I would give it four out of five stars too. Most tracks make sense if you're a fan of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds which is the sub-title of the CD, Songs that inspired the Bad Seeds. All but three songs can be found on their albums in covers and/or based on but rewritten in someway. Cat Man was an early The Birthday Party cover. The Big Hurt was on the MOJO soundtrack with the help of the great British band Gallon Drunk and Jane & Serge classic Cave sung an English version called TocarI Love You....Nor Do I with Anita Lane. The liner notes from this CD is great and I recommend this album. But I should warn you about the last song it's almost 19 minutes long and is sometimes a bit too much. It really should be Glen Campbell's TocarBy The Time I Get To Phoenix which is the original too but for some mad reason this one got put on the CD. Which I think is the reason why I wouldn't rate it five stars, missing one whole star for this nightmare of a song, sorry Issac but I wish you got to Phoenix a bit quicker. Cave says about it: "He does a long explanation about what women are actually like; it's very funny. How men have just got to go out." This quote is from a great book called "Songwriters Speak" I found at my local library, more about that later but here's the website: http://www.debbiekruger.com/songwritersspeak/about.html

Original Seeds, Volume 2 - Track listing:
    1. Harry Belafonte - Did You Hear About Jerry?
2.Tom Waits - Way Down In The Hole
    3. Fred Neil - A Little Bit of Rain
    4. Gang of Four - TocarLove Like Anthrax
    5. Bob Dylan - Sara
    6. Tim Rose - Hey Joe
    7. The First Edition - TocarJust Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)
    8. Elvis Presley - TocarIn The Ghetto
    9. Nina Simone - Plain Gold Ring
    10. The Stooges - TocarLoose
    11. Leadbelly - Black Betty
    12. Hoyt Axton - Double Dare
    13. Lou Reed - TocarPerfect Day
    14. Alice Cooper - Street Fight
This one is not in any way as good as the the first one. I would rate it two and half out of five. Why? Well, I'm giving it half a star each for the songs which are on Bad Seeds albums the rest are, really could be's. Only Hey Joe, In The Ghetto, Plain Gold Ring, Black Betty and the last half star goes to writing up liner notes to convince you the rest are just as important. Loose was a live favorite of The Birthday Party. Some were going to be on the cover album Kicking Against the Pricks but never recorded. Played live once or twice in the years of playing shows. Mick Harvey has played the others himself solo or on his albums. Another warning for the last song again this time it's only 55 seconds long so why is it here? Well, I don't really know which is what I mean by the liner notes hoping you buy in too what is written but one word for that song: pointless.

Mojo Presents Bad Seeds, Nick Cave: Roots & Collaborations - Tracks listing
    1. The Saints - This Perfect Day
    2. Johnny Cash - TocarFolsom Prison Blues
    3. John Lee Hooker - Tupelo Blues
    4. Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel

    6. Scott Walker - The Big Hurt
    7. Current 93 - TocarAll the Pretty Little Horses

    13. Peggy Seeger - Henry Lee
    14. Mississippi John Hurt - TocarStack O' Lee Blues
    15. Hank Williams - TocarI'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
This CD was given away for free with Mojo Magazine but I have seen it for sale on ebay. It was with this years March issue with Mr. Cave on the cover. I would rate it three out five stars which is good for a give-away album. A few double ups but the version of Long Time Man is different longer re-recorded in 2003 just before Tim Rose passed away. The one on Original Seeds was record in 1967. Cave sings on Current 93 and Lydia Lunch tracks. TocarLoverman is the only cover and the reason for this one is both are on Mute Records. The rest is pretty clear if your a fan but if you buy the magazine that comes with the CD or should that be the other way around, there is a two page write up about all the tracks.

    20. Mississippi John Hurt - Stack O' Lee Blues
    21. Dick Justice - Henry Lee
    22. Blind Willie Johnson - TocarJohn the Revelator
I think I got this one before the Mojo magazine's one but both came out around the same time at the beginning of the year. I'll rate it three and a half out of five stars just under the first one. I like it better maybe because I love all the really, really old songs on it. A lot of older songs or just a lot more than the three previous ones. More double up's again but a few ones that should have been so obvious before. The Streets Of Laredo was a song Conway Savage sung on tour around the time of the Doco "The Road To God Knows Where" which makes up a few of the songs here which were played kind-off like a tour mix tape. Harry's track makes more sense this time, it's from when Nick Cave - Mick Harvey - Blixa Bargeld did the soundtrack to To Have And To Hold and re-recorded Tocarmourning song (performed by raun raun theatre). TocarJohn the Revelator is from The Harry Smith Project Live Vol. 1 and TocarShine on Me is from The Harry Smith Project Live Vol. 2. If you want more info there is good liner notes written by Dave Henderson who's from Mojo magazine too.

This is going to be the fifth one of these kind of CD's and is out next week (October 12th or around about then). I don't think I should rate it because I don't have it yet. Once again more doubles and so many more than the others before this one. There are 23 tracks more than all the other CD's and all of these are total classics I could listen to them again and again. The songs which aren't on the other ones really should have been included before and also add up to the number of tracks on the first three. I don't know if it would be silly for me to buy another one but I guess if you haven't got any of the other four this new one looks like it could be the best one so far. Last thing to say about it would be is if you know anything about Nick Cave and the song Hey Joe it's off course the Tim Rose version he loves not the Jimi Hendrix one but in saying that Jimi's one is the more famous, and putting it on here is not doubling up the other song again so that's OK, I guess. I do think there are a lot of tracks which could or should be on these kind-off CDs but are not, I shall make a list here on last.fm at the end of this journal.

His drunken sing-a-long with David McComb

I just got this great book about David McComb & The Triffids which is so great. I'm not finished it yet but I think it would be five stars out of five it is that great. It's better than any bio book ever written. It written by all sorts of people. I would recommend it to everyone. One of the most funny story's is written by Nick Cave talking about getting drunk at an Aussie picnic in London with David and having a sing-a-long with each other, I'm going to write out the list of songs they sung but get the full story and so much more buy the book here: http://www.fremantlepress.com.au/books/newreleases/1104 And that is a drawing of David by Martyn P. Casey anyway here's the list of songs David & Nick sung, more of these songs have been covered heavily but I've tried to find the originals. Can you imagine two drunk Aussies singing them???
    1. The Beatles - Maxwell's Silver Hammer
    2. Bob Dylan - I Threw It All Away
    3. Dionne Warwick - TocarWalk On By
    4. Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass - TocarThis Guy's in Love with You
    5. John Denver - TocarLeaving On A Jet Plane
    6. Simon & Garfunkel - TocarBridge Over Troubled Water
    7. Peter, Paul & Mary - Lemon Tree
    8. Mississippi Sheiks - TocarSitting on Top of the World
    9. The Seekers - TocarGeorgy Girl (From Film 'Georgy Girl')
    10. Bruce Springsteen - TocarThunder Road
    11. Elvis Presley - TocarBlue Moon
    12. The Mamas & The Papas - TocarCalifornia Dreamin'
    13. Carpenters - TocarCalling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
    14. Aretha Franklin - TocarI Say A Little Prayer
    15. Simon & Garfunkel - TocarThe Boxer
    16. Elvis Presley - TocarSuspicious Minds
    17. Elvis Presley - TocarKentucky Rain
    18. Leonard Cohen - Bird on a Wire
    19. Malvina Reynolds - TocarMorningtown Ride
    20. Simon & Garfunkel - TocarCecilia
    21. The Beatles - Yesterday
    22. Ella Fitzgerald - TocarAnything Goes
    23. Frank Sinatra - TocarWhat'll I Do?
    24. The 5th Dimension - Tocar(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep At All
    25. Carpenters - Close To Me
    26. Bob Dylan - Belle Isle
    27. Bob Dylan - Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
Nobody at the time put these two guys in a recording studio to record all this and as far as I know the only song they did together or should I say David sung on backing vocal's for Nick's TocarLay Me Low in 1994 which I have to say is kind-off perfect and very odd because a few years later McComb passed away but what is even more odd is the very last song he recorded was Still Alive And Well on Where Joy Kills Sorrow album. If you would like that album check it out here: http://www.wminc.com.au/catalogue1.shtml#006 It's a classic Aussie album.

    Extras
OK here is a couple of things that I haven't fitted into my journals before about Cave, first is the book called "Songwriters Speaks" by Debbie Kruger. To sum up the book quickly it's got just over 600 pages and is full of interviews with Aussie songwriters. Most are, if not all, are mainstream singers and Cave is the only one I'm into but I've had a look at the others before returning, did I say it a library book? A few things I want to note down here for myself really but who ever reads these might like to know too is:
In the intro pages Kruger says "I particularly enjoyed his (Cave's) anecdotes about encounters with Rolf Harris and Barry Humphries." which are funny but are nowhere in the interview so my guess is these were edited out because there not about songwriting. The interview starts on page 430 and goes to 445 so it's longer that most magazines or online. It was done at his office in Hove, England in 2004 around the time of Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus.
    The songs talked about are:
TocarLoom of the Land saying the line "The elms and the poplars were turning their backs" which is from Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov and he wished he edited it out because "I don't like the idea of someone reading Lolita and going, "Oh, How often has he done that?" "
TocarInto My Arms is talked about. In Triple J's Hottest 100 of all-time recently saying it was written after he visited a church which wouldn't be anything different from him really but the whole story is a bit more to it. He was in some drug rehab clinic and the only place you were allowed to go was a church and three days in on a Sunday he'd come back feeling very ill and "sat down and wrote that very quickly, and I didn't have anything there to play it on... rehabilitation didn't work [Laughs], at least I got a good song out of it." which makes a bit more sense really.
Tocar(Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For? he said he wrote in a taxicab on the way to INXS singer Michael Hutchence's house which is a bit odd and kind-off changes the track for me but then again Cave played Into My Arms at Micheal's funeral and famously insisted the TV cameras to be turned off while he sung it.
TocarNobody's Baby Now was written for Johnny Cash's American Recordings but he thought "Fuck it, I'm not handing that over. I really love that song and I'm going to do it." then later on in the interview says "I'm particularly proud of the first verse... takes so long to get to the point." going on to say "It reminds me of TocarTupelo Honey the Van Morrison song."
There are off course other songs he talks about but see if you can find the book at your library too.

Another book Cave makes it in to is "The Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature" which is an epic encyclopedia size book. Which has some of the best, most significant writing produced in Australia over more than two centuries. Very few contemporary songwriters make it into it only Kev Carmody's TocarFrom Little Things Big Things Grow, Archie Roach's Took The Children Away, Yothu Yindi's TocarTreaty and Cave's TocarOpium Tea which I have to say is an odd one to pick but I've said that before in this journal. Check it out here: http://www.macquariepenanthology.com.au/aboutaustliteratureanthology.html

MILUJU KANTRY. vic nez metal, (ted bude vtip) vic nez hiphop, mnohem vic nez pAper chAse. je to stejne dobry jako dobrej sex a skoro tak dobry jako dobrej chlast. jiny veci na svete uz myslim zadny nejsou. ted to reknu znovu aby to pochopil i ten nejposlednejsi belgican. NEJLEPSI MUZIKA JE KANTRY. a nejlepsi kantry je Hank Williams. jako spravny kantry je taky Haggard a Jennings a Jones! a Coe a Nelson (ackoliv je na muj vkus dost hipik, ale ideologii na chvili stranou) a kdyz je krize i Kristofferson a jisteze Cash a Hancock a Yoakam a Owens a Hank Snow. a neni nahoda, ze nejlip tahle muzika zni na vinylu a rozhodne neni nahoda, ze vetsinu tehle elpicek mam z eBaye nebo od kamaradu, co sice kantry moc neposlouchaji ale vi co posloucham ja, nebo od willa z Wolves in the Throne Room. ten vam taky potvrdi to, co pisu o Williamsovi. a kdyz Hank III hral ten vecer I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive a hned potom Cocaine Blues, celej uplne fantastickej vecer povysil na - voila! - nejlepsi koncert myho zivota!

(ne neudelam to.)

(mirne povytazene oboci.)

So I'm here to put the "dick" in Dixie and the "cunt" back in country
'Cause the kind of country I hear nowdays is a bunch of fuckin' shit to me
And they say that I'm ill-mannered that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin', you'll know that pop country really sucks

I guess they don't like the way we like to have our fun
'cause I'm always out there and I'm on the run
and I'm runnin' and a gunnin' and a lookin' for a damn good time!

STRAIGHT TO HELL! prvni hodina, jenom samy kantry. sice ma posledni desku Damn Right Rebel Proud (miluju tu desku a nejvic miluju ten nazev a jeste vic ten vinyl... pick up the gun dear and put me asleep), ale zahral skoro celou Straight to Hell a jeste spoustu starejch veci. kurvaaaaa!!!! a bylo to uplne bozi. Crazed Country Rebel, Dick in Dixie, Pills I Took, Six Pack of Beer, Long Houls..., Thrown out of the Bar a NEJLEPSI P.F.F. a takovy ty jakoze kantry balady Me and My Friends, Three Shades of Black, Country Heroes nebo My Drinkin' Problem. byl krasne vytahnutej vokal, coz znelo uplne skvele, a kdyz hraly housle tak byly slyset HOUSLE a kdyz hrala steel kytara tak byla slysel STEEL KYTARA, vsechno bylo skvele zahrany a vsechny sbory jako treba "... I am going straight to hell -- HELL!!!" byly zarvany uplne nejlip jak mohly bejt a lidi okolo to vsechno znali a treba kdyz hrali Dick in Dixie (mam asize uplne nejvicraci), tak byly paradne vypichnuty DICK! a CUNT! a FUCKIN SHIT! a POP! COUN-TRY REEAA-LLYYY SUUUUUUCKS! jechechee nejlepsi! nebo "I'm-drrrrrriinkin looot-of whiskeeeyyyyy, smoking all the tiiime, I'm getting fucked up every GOD-DAM NITE!" nebo "'cause I'm drunk! for 30 days! and i don't care if I die!" lalala "my oooown hellbilly rrriiiiiigh!" bylo to vsechno hrozne rychly a zahrali toho fakt furu a tyvole to nejlepsi? jakoze KURVA nejlepsi...? jo, nakonec.

nedokazu rict, jakou pisnicku od staryho Hanka mam nejradsi, ale I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive je rozhodne uplne epochal a nechybi na skoro zadny bestofce (a je to otvirak desky Three Hanks: Men with Broken Hearts, ktera ale jinak neni tak dobra) a v tom ja se vyznam, protoze jich doma mam asi trinact. pice tyvole tak tam stal tenhleten Hank III co vypada jako Hank (rika mu "daddys daddy") a zpiva jako Hank a on to technicky vzato JE Hank a tim padem ja jsem nejvic lucky kovbojka na svete a nemusim ani zavirat voci, abych si to predstavila. kurva nejlepsi. jako kazda kantry pisnicka i tahle trva tak dve minuty, ty dve minuty, co rozhodne patri do nejlepsich ctyriceti minut myho zivota. nojo. a pak dal jeste Cocaine Blues, coz je... kurva, no. ani nevim co rict. bylo to jako kdyz na konci kdysi zahrali Converge Jane Doe a jednou jsem videla pridavat Young Gods Skinflowers anebo kdyz Motorhead hrajou na konci Ace of Spades, hehe.

    (...) I can't forget the day I shot that bad - bitch - down
Come on you've gotta listen onto me:
Lay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be...
    SUE!

    Herr Mladek, Hank III

And if you know what I'm thinkin'
You'll know that pop country really sucks

  • Bob Dylan’s influence on Jack White

    Jul 31 2009, 13h14 por LieveK

I’ve been a fan of The White Stripes for some years now and about half a year ago started listening to Bob Dylan. I couldn’t help noticing that Bob Dylan, both as a musician and as a person, had a huge influence on Jack White, so I did some research (don’t expect anything too professional) and came across some interesting facts.

First there’s the Dylan-covers. The White Stripes’ debut album (The White Stripes) contains the song One More Cup of Coffee, which was written by Dylan in 1976 and is to be found on his album Desire. Horehound, the debut album of White’s newest group The Dead Weather also features a Dylan-cover: New Pony, which was on Street Legal in 1978.
So there are two covers to be found on Jack White-albums, but he also did some live performances of Dylan songs. There’s Outlaw Blues, which features in the Under Blackpool Lights concert (see video fragment here). Also Isis and Love Sick have been covered during live shows. You can probably find amateur recordings of these songs on YouTube, so check it out if you want to.

In interviews with Jack White or the White Stripes Bob Dylan is often mentioned as an inspiration, both to Jack and Meg. Jack was once caught saying he had 3 fathers: his biological father, God and Bob Dylan.

Then there’s the White Stripes album sleeves. It always struck me as strange when I read the texts Jack wrote in it. I never really understood them until I began listening to Bob Dylan. In the sleeves of Dylan’s first albums there are to be found similar “liner notes” (he dropped the habit after John Wesley Harding as far as I know). There are some differences in the style of writing though. Dylan uses more characters in his texts and writes strange surreal stories about them, while White writes down more abstract ideas, but I guess they’re both “écriture automatique” or in English “automatic writing” (check it out on Wiki if you don’t exactly know what it is). Though probably Dylan and White weren’t completely unconscious what they were writing (I once tried some of this automatic writing too, even before I was listening to Dylan or The White Stripes, and believe me, you’ll be surprised about what you read sometimes, give it a try!).

But I think this respect is mutual. In 2007 Jack White was allowed up on stage with Bob Dylan himself in Nashville, during one of the legends “Never Ending Tour”-concerts. He got Dylan to play his first ever live performance of Meet Me in the Morning which is to be found on Dylan’s most acclaimed 70s album Blood on the Tracks. You can listen to the recording of this performance here. Two nights after that Jack White appeared as a guest on stage again and played two songs with Dylan: Outlaw Blues and One More Cup of Coffee. A video recording of this performance can be found here.

Also in his Theme Time Radio Hour, Bob Dylan sometimes shows his respect for White. In the episodes ‘Countdown’ and ‘Doctors’ he played one of the White Stripes’ songs. This means Dylan really must like their music, seen he only plays music he likes in his radio show. Jack White even appeared as a guest in the ‘Classic Rock’ episode. Meg White was also mentioned as a female drummer in the episode ‘Musical Instruments’.

When Dylan found the ‘lost’ Hank Williams songs he contacted a couple of artists to write music to some of the songs. Apparently they released one tribute album already in 2001 called Timeless (A Tribute To Hank Williams), but in 2007 Jack White was asked by Dylan to write music for one of Williams’ songs. I didn’t find any more information about this project, so if anyone has an update on this put it in a comment or something.

This is it… If you have any remarks or you know more about it (which most of you probably do) feel free to leave a comment!

  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (7-12-09)

    Jul 16 2009, 4h42 por Carpetbagger513

Johnny Cash is dead and his house burned down and he’s the #1 artist in The 9513’s Last.fm group.

I’m not sure that any of those events are related, despite what Larry Gatlin may say. It’s no huge surprise that the Man in Black has been at or near the top of the charts for so long, given his musical output and his overwhelming popularity among Last.fm users. I’ve written about his Last.fm stats before, but his total number of plays (37,717,425) is more than the next 19 artists on the chart combined. Number 20, Taylor Swift, has the second-largest number of total plays, with a shade under 9.5 million. It will be interesting to watch the battle of teenage girls vs. music hipsters to see if the Cash fans can keep ahead of the Swift onslaught.

Behind Cash’s 25 The 9513 listeners come Sugarland and George Strait with 24 each. Brad Paisley’s domination of the chart lasted for exactly one week, as he drops down to #4 with 23. Martina McBride (19), who had a week-long run of her own when her last album came out, joined Dwight Yoakam (21), Brooks & Dunn and Dixie Chicks (both with 20), Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney (both with 19 as well) in the Top 10.

On the Americana side, Charlie Robison continues to be the most popular artist with 14 listeners, but this is where the gray area between that genre and country music sets in. Is Patty Loveless (16) full-fledged Americana now? What about Hank (18), Merle (17) or Willie (15)? Is Gary Allan (18) one commercial failure away from joining the Americana club? Other more easily defined artists on the chart include Jason Michael Carroll (8 listeners), Drive-By Truckers (7) and Big & Rich (6, better than what Big or Rich could do on their own). Texas singer Owen Temple, who recently announced he was giving away his new record, has had some takers already, as 7 people listened to his music.

As Paisley’s American Saturday Night slips to #3 with 12 listeners, Sugarland picks up the slack, with Enjoy The Ride (14) and Love On The Inside (13) ending up #1 and #2, respectively. The Foundation from Zac Brown Band was among the albums tied for #4 with 11 listeners, and Lady Antebellum’s self-titled debut (10) and The Life Of A Song by Joey + Rory (9) are among the others in the Top 10. Robison’s Beautiful Day should have more than 8 listeners, but the fact that it ranks higher than Kellie Pickler’s self-titled album (7) is a consolation.

The Top Singles chart is pretty eclectic this week. Sugarland’s “Joey” is #1 with 9 listeners, followed by Cash’s version of “Hurt,” Paisley’s “Then” and Sugarland’s “It Happens” all tied for #2 with 8. Aside from being one of the more depressing batches of top-ranked songs, it’s also one of the most economical in terms of titles. That’s five words in the titles of the top four songs. Reba’s “Strange” had 7 listeners as well, putting it in the Top 5 along with the positively verbose “Forever And Ever, Amen” from Randy Travis and “I Run To You” by Lady Antebellum. “TocarWrapped” had a pretty good week, as 5 people listened to the George Strait version and 2 more played the Bruce Robison version. No one played the Kelly Willis cover, though. Those songs with 6 listeners, tying for #9 on the charts, represent a greatest-hits selection from country music, including Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” Dwight Yoakam’s “Streets Of Bakersfield,” Conway Twitty’s “Hello Darlin’” and Vince Gill’s “TocarWhen I Call Your Name.” Then there’s Adele’s “Chasing Pavements,” also at #9. There is a country connection there, as Adele sang it as a duet with Sugarland at the 2009 Grammys. I just hope that “Pour Some Sugar On Me” doesn’t chart, as Taylor Swift apparently has made that a country song, too.

Freebie of the Week: According to Last.fm tags, Assembly of Dust could be considered rock, bluegrass, jam band, country, folk or, for the spelling impaired, soulfull oldtimey jam. Led by singer Reid Genauer, the band’s upcoming fourth release, Some Assembly Required, features a wide array of special guests, including Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice and David Grisman. Other non-country guests include Martin Sexton, Richie Havens, Mike Gordon (Phish) and Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon). The band has been preparing for the release by giving away one track each week for anyone who signs up for their mailing list (http://www.aodust.com/). So far there are six available songs, including “Leadbelly” with Douglas, “Arc of the Sun” with Gordon and “Straight” with Theresa Andersson. The jam-band tag is understandable with these songs, particularly when they let the guest musicians cut loose, but a song like “Leadbelly” wouldn’t be out of place on a country station–well, not one of today’s country stations, but you get my meaning.
