  • IMO Song and Album of the Year 1967-2006 (Warning: bias toward metal and prog)

    Jul 24 2009, 14h32 por GrantRS

Below I have chosen a favourite album and favourite song from 40 separate years ('67-'06). This is just my opinion and based on the music I've actually heard. The favourite track does not have to come from the year's corresponding favourite album. In cases where the track does happen to come from the year's favourite album it is usually either an indicator of a weak year (1993) or an incredibly strong album (1982). However, I do tend to change my mind quite a bit, so I may return to this journal to update my preferences, particularly when I discover new albums and new tracks to love. In most cases the decision was incredibly close with many runners up in extremely close contention

  • A few easy ways to determine if your bestest favoritest band is overrated on last.fm.

    Dez 7 2008, 10h42 por 0k0k0k0

Firstly, YHALOTHAR. last.fm = epic fail for messing with their own formatting stuff. Hence, the repost. Go figure.

    1. ‘surveys’, ‘top x questions/whatever’, ‘memes’, or other such material with similar ‘content’ infest the artist’s recent journals.

A transfer of symbols without a transfer of values, that’s what those ‘reading’ materials most signify. Boredom is no excuse for making trite observations about characteristics of so-and-so. At the very least there’s always the option of leaving the artist connections off for those who actually had something interesting to say. It’s almost always about original content. This journal is no different from the rest and that in itself should be a lesson for those who never knew better.

    2. one retard polluting the shoutbox is enough to ruin them.

Two kinds of one, actually, the fan and the ‘hater’. The ‘hater’ for being ‘obviously’ what s/he is, and the fantard for needlessly glorifying them. Especially the ones who refuse to acknowledge imperfection’s reality; it comes hand in hand with lacking the necessary faculties and/or willpower for incisive cogitation. E-snarkiness is not that hard to detect, especially the tired old ones. Most people are still new to this internet socialization thingamajig, most presumably. Or just poor judges of character anywhere.

    3. http://www.last.fm/charts .

Don’t delude yourself otherwise. A hundred thousand listeners give or take a few thousand spam scrobblers can’t be wrong. An unfunny example of emergent behavior in action. Besides, check the journal title. If you found yourself in this page from one of those listed there (how remote the possibility considering point 1) do the right thing and just accept the deal. And think about it, of course. Adroit observation of human behavior online and off helps. A lot.

    --

These only mean that for every grim and frostbitten band with only 666 listeners at least one of them’s bound to share the music with all the wrong sorts of people who more often than not will only repeat the process to offensive degrees until the label of ‘sellout’ emerges due to the number of so-called ‘fans’ who simply ‘don’t get it’. Children and men-children, the lot of them. Thus, EVERY artist is overrated on last.fm. A transfer of knowledge without a transfer of values. ‘not getting it’ and ‘getting it but disagreeing with it either in whole or in part’ are mutually exclusive principles, that much is obvious.

    ---
A realization of futility won’t dull resolve if prime intent is to rise above it.

Also, because my motives are nigh unfathomable. Today is a relatively short one.

And it’s that time of the year again. Get yourselves some presents.

  • Song Of The Day - 1st October 2008: Window to the Soul

    Out 1 2008, 19h55 por GrantRS

GPS / "Window to the Soul" / Window to the Soul (1) / Aug 2006

    Artist: GPS
Original Album: Window To The Soul
    Track: Window To The Soul

I had this in mind for Song of the Day since, well, the first listen through the album, which was just a couple of days ago for me. You could then view it as unfortunate that I basically gave it away through having the album appear repeatedly in my recent tracks since Monday. However, not to be easily put off, I have instead had an idea, which goes thusly:

On my user page I keep a rolling list of the last ten albums I bought. Strictly speaking however, at any given time I've usually bought an album online that I'm currently waiting for, so it's really more of a 'last ten albums that arrived through my door'. In the event of a tie break situation (i.e. more than one album arriving through the door on a given day, the order is usually determined by the order in which I gave the discs their first spins. So the idea I've had today is: what if I just add questionmarks* next to the numbers to denote new purchases, and wait for people to guess what they are? Kind of like a game, only with less clearly defined rules. If someone guesses one of the recent purchases from the list, I will put it on the list in it's correct position, but if no one guesses it you'll never know what I bought. Sound fun? Sound easy? I'll give it a trial run and if it doesn't workout the old system will soon be reinstated.

Note that this may actually be more revealing about me than the actual completely honest system I currently use. Also note, I won't necessarily be a huge fan of every album I buy since I generally only listen to one or two tracks prior to purchase, if that!

Oh, hang on, I haven't said anything about the actual track. By early 2006 Geoff Downes was the only remaining original member of Asia, alongside him were John Payne, Jay Schellen and Guthrie Govan, the latter one of my favourite guitarists. However, in early 2006, the original members of Asia decided to reform, forcing Payne, Schellen and Govan out of the band. These three continued to work together however, soon taking the name GPS, and adding Spock's Beard keyboardist Ryo Okumoto to the line-up. The material isn't too far removed from the material that Asia would normally put out, though many have said it's ever so slightly more progressive. It's a very good album, though as I've said elsewhere about an hour ago, not mindblowing. (Unlike Govan's solo album Erotic Cakes which I highlighted AGES ago, or the Spock's Beard album Snow which I have yet to highlight, despite having picked out two Beard songs.) The first two tracks are standouts for me. This first one is the crunchiest on the album, and therefore the heaviest and the one that I feel most at home with, while New Jerusalem is possibly the most upliftingly positive and best lyrically. It's very inoffensive stuff overall that (if not for the lengths of the tracks) could easily be aired on commercial radio stations without too much fuss, not that your average ordinary radio-listening person would necessary love it and run out and buy it, in fact it's highly unlikely that would happen, let's face it that's the way radio is these days. What I mean is apart from thinking "Hang on, I haven't heard this 4 times already today and in fact every day for the last month" it wouldn't sound too out of place on some of the more laid back and mature radio stations. I'm digging myself into a hole with that line of thought though, I think. Lyrically, the album is soothing and slow moving, though Payne's vocals seem to be a little strained at points, I guess that's just his style of singing. Instrumentally, I find myself waiting for the solos for anything really interesting to happen, but when it does it's a very controlled stretching of the legs, hardly reaching into the almost jazzy territory of Govan's solo work or the full on prog of Spock's Beard. Instead, we have some carefully considered and crafted solos that almost sound as though they are trying to mimick original Asia guitarist and Yes member Steve Howe. There's still enough of a sense that it is Govan and not Howe playing to keep me conscious of who I'm listening to (and I may even be exaggerating the similarity between Howe and Govan's playing here), but hey I'm a Yes fan anyway so it's a good addition to the collection that shall be receiving further plays I'm sure. Recommended, but not as a top priority.

    * Note that this doesn't mean I'm buying ? over and over. In fact, I haven't even bought it once, or heard it.

  • Song Of The Day - 14th June 2008: Led Boots

    Jun 14 2008, 18h36 por GrantRS

    Jeff Beck / "Led Boots" / Wired (1) / May 1976

    Artist: Jeff Beck
    Original Album: Wired
    Track: TocarLed Boots

So the day of my first attendance of the London Guitar Show for two years has finally arrived, but foolishly I've used most of the performers who I saw there in previous entries, and even more foolishly I used the artist ost frequently covered at these sort of events, Hendrix, just a couple of days ago. So today's choice was a surprise cover.

Just looking up the album on wikipedia to confirm the release date, and I discovered that this track was written by keyboardist Max Middleton whom happens to be from the same town that I live in. Coincidence? Eh, I read about so many musicians eventually one had to share my hometown.

Anyway, I was treated to a rather unique cover version of this song today performed by Billy Sheehan and Guthrie Govan with drummer Pete Riley, and later managed to get my copy of Guthrie's Erotic Cakes signed. Billy's take on this track was rather interesting, and far more metal than the original, though that may have been partly down to technical gremlins that seemed to be pestering the live stage throughout the day. Hey, I liked their cover though, it gave the song some oomph that it didn't quite have before. I did however get the distinct impression that they hadn't really rehearsed together on a regular basis though.

  • Song Of The Day - 13th June 2008: Crack The Meter

    Jun 13 2008, 19h23 por GrantRS

Jordan Rudess / "Crack The Meter" / Feeding The Wheel (7) / Oct 2001

    Artist: Jordan Rudess
    Original Album: Feeding the Wheel
    Track: TocarCrack the Meter

Featuring Steve Morse, Billy Sheehan and Terry Bozzio. Now that is an all star line-up.

I'm heading down to the London International Music Show tomorrow, mainly for the London Guitar Show which has been absorbed into the greater whole that is the LIMS, so I thought I'd pick an instrumental track from a keyboardist's solo album. Ok, the real reason is because Billy Sheehan is scheduled to play a solo set there which I'm interested to see, and I didn't really feel like picking one of his solo efforts today. (Hey, maybe tomorrow might be the day for that?)

There are other acts I'm riveted to see there, but to be honest I've showcased most of them in SotD already, or at least bands that they've played with. Notably Guthrie Govan who is perhaps the one I'm most looking forward to seeing. Hopefully I may even get his autograph at the Cornford stand?
