Tudo começou quando Slash, Duff e Izzy tocavam o riff (que futuramente seria “Sweet Child o’ Mine”) em seu apartamento, Axl Rose no andar de cima os ouviu tocando e gostou da música, logo em seguida Axl escreveu a letra, muitas desavenças “rolaram” após criada a música, pois Slash muito fã do Hard Rock achava ridículo gravar uma música tão Pop quanto esta, entraram em um consenso e ela acabou sendo gravada.
A canção foi o primeiro single do Guns N’ Roses a atingir o primeiro lugar na Billboard Hot 100, durante duas semanas em Setembro de 1988.
