I love this song. I myself was 'just a little deadhead' and was at the Santa Cruz Garden Mall when the '89 quake hit. The wrecking ball was busy for months removing all the historic buidings from our downtown afterward. Ford's dept store almost fell on me. so this song always blows me away when I hear it.

It matters not who wrote this, what matters is the sweet powerful melody rolling from her voice...like a wrecking ball

actually it's a totally different song...Emmylou covered the Neil Young track. Gillian Welch wrote this song. I think with David Rawlings. Same title, different song. To me this is the height of songwriting and melody and lyrics and...Wow. Every time.

I've long known (and admired) the Emmylou Harris version, but where did this song come from - Welch? Young? or Emmylou, herself?

this woman is a great songwriter. she does that neil young thing (or maybe its just a thing that great songwriters can do!) of writing tunes that seem so simple and obvious that you can't believe no one's found it before.
