Fev 28 2009, 19h12 por laura_macSo here we are again, on the very last day of the month. This month's mixtape theme was generational music--songs handed down to you by your parents, and songs you want to hand down to your kids. This was pretty personal to me, especially the first half, which really brings back memories of my early childhood. "Bennie and the Jets" was my first favorite song, and when my parents allowed me to operate their old turntable when I was about 7 or 8, I would play Goodbye Yellow Brick Road over and over. While the other kids in my school were listening to boy bands, I was listening to my dad's Marshall Tucker Band CDs. And I'll always associate "Low Spark" with my parents, since my mom and dad knew Steve Winwood in the 80s, and own a signed copy of Low Spark on vinyl. When I would fret about something silly as a kid, my mom would always say to me, "don't worry too much it'll happen to you."
The second half, made up of songs I want my children to hear, was tricky. …
Abr 29 2008, 4h22 por laura_macSo, I first would like to acknowledge pzantingh, also of the Monthly Mixtape community, from whom I brazenly stole this brilliant idea. The thing is, I make these mixtapes every month to send to one person. Occasionally, I'm proud enough of them to post them on the community board, but I still feel that they're being wasted to a certain extent. Also (to a lesser extent), I want the constructive criticism that inevitably comes from exposing your work to the much wider audience of musical sticklers that is Last.fm. Finally, a blog of this kind gives me the chance to make some of that cool cover art that everyone seems to like so much.
A couple of caveats: I won't tell you which ones are which, but there are definitely some of these mixes I'm more proud of than others. Looking back, there are definitely some things I would have changed, but I've put them up in their original condition, warts and all. You will also notice that there is no mixtape for November of last year. …
Mar 29 2008, 3h18 por bolanchildI'm gradded, and feeling nostalgic, so I've decided to compile a soundtrack to the music of my high school years. (Some of which were terrible, lest I forget!) So now I embark on some self-centered, indulgent sentimentality.
I started off the year still obsessed with grunge music, and a HUGE obsession with the Bauhaus and their angular lead singer, the Murphster. By the end of the school year I had fallen in love with Morrissey, who drew me into veganism, celibacy, etc. ;) My new found interest in the Mozzer was so overwhelming, that for the first time in my life David Bowie was pushed aside and completely forgotten about! :O (David Bowie's Station to Station was like my life for a while that year, too.)
Cuts You Up Peter Murphy
Wicked Game H.I.M.
Jennifer's Body Hole
Helden David Bowie
Dark Entries Bauhaus
Adia Sarah Maclaclan
Blue Monday New Order
Word on a Wing David Bowie
Mandinka Sinead O'Connor
Float On Modest Mouse
Yassassin David Bowie
Jan 20 2008, 1h47 por laura_macI don't think I bought enough CDs which were released in the last year to construct a fair and balanced top 10 albums of 2007, so instead I'm going to list my top ten artists, albums, and tracks as far as number of listens in the last year. Mostly I'm doing this for my own interest, but if what you see brings to mind any comments or suggestions, feel free to leave them here. :)

Nov 12 2007, 19h28 por fakeheadNovember 7 I finally got up off of my ass and bought a cassette player/recorder. Only this is not just any cassette player/recorder, it's a boombox that can record from CD AND radio. I bought it and left with about $.30 left in my checking account. Phew, that was a tough week.
