"With" refers solely to musical collaborations, not to support acts whatsoever. Bold are gigs that were undeniably brilliant.

До сих пор, если мне не изменяет память, столь явных сотрудничеств с какими-либо музыкантами в их трудовой книжке не прописано. Вообще, это яркая и заметная тенденция в мире музыки - создавать альбомы с парой-тройкой (тут уж как бюджет позволит, либо же широта кругозора самих музыкантов) селебритис. А так как Converge на протяжении 19 лет являют собой всамделишных богов тяжелой музыки, то и мимо них не прошло. Запредельное количество гостей на квадратный метр - я насчитал 13.
Причем тот или иной гость, как слышно, не просто выбежал, сыграл/спел свою партию и убежал. Если гость есть, то он на весь трек, и порой аж доминантную позицию занимает. С первых же "совместных" треков становится ясно, что Effigy - это вот как если бы Converge решили поиграть в Cave In; Wishing Well - это довольно-таки straightforward d-beat, Disfear; Cruel Bloom - ну тут гибрид из "In Her Shadow" и сольных деяний Стива Фон Тилля; ну а финальный трек и вовсе являет собой extended version of "I Won't Come Back Alive" Genghis Tron'а (гостей в нем больше, чем участников Converge). "Чистых" песен, без примесей, Converge тут 5. Пять из тринадцати, меньше половины.
Быть может Converge решили сложить фигу из пальцев и помахать ей перед всеми - а-ля и мы так можем, и даже лучше можем. Смысла в этом нет, это по умолчанию известно - ни одна другая группа в жанре не повлияла столь сильно на других. А может это передача эстафеты (глупо не считать Bannon'а сотоварищи полными сил, ибо исколесили/продолжают колесить они мир вдоль и поперек, плюс собственные проекты стоят в очереди) новым талантам (явные фавориты - Genghis Tron).
Таким образом вы думаете, что я сейчас выдам сакраментальное "фи" и поставлю печать - не годен? Не-а. Никогда.
Как бы разнопланово не звучал этот материал, он звучит цельно, как и сказал Bannon. Единая огромная глыба; монумент.
Все ведь знают, как подается горячая вода в наши дома? Так вот этот альбом похож как раз на неё. Открываешь кран, происходит плевок вроде бы чистой воды, дальше идет густая субстанция цвета ржавчины, спустя минуту-две начинает идти уже сама горячая вода. Вот и тут также: сначала обуревает невероятная эйфория (ядрен батон, это ж новый альбом Converge!), потом вслушиваешься и понимаешь, что что-то тут не то (как же так?!), а потом, спустя 2-3 прослушивания всё проясняется, и можно окунуться с головой.Новая история, а точнее продолжение истории о жизни многострадального человека в этом мире, где "нет героев". Если Jane Doe можно охарактеризовать как глубокое смятение, психоз; You Fail Me - отчаяние, депрессия, переживание, личная глубокая травма, слезы на глазах; No Heroes - сплошная мизантропия, тотальный нигилизм, ненависть, "быль в глаза", то Axe To Fall - самый настоящий боевой гимн (не зря впечатления от той же Dark Horse у большинства описывается фразой "хочется бежать и рубить всех подряд"), ярость, точка кипения, налитые кровью глаза человека, который прошел через смятение и нервный срыв (Jane Doe), пережил глубокую депрессию (You Fail Me), возненавидел весь мир (No Heroes) и вот теперь, брызжя слюной, готов взять "топор" и рубить всех и вся, без разбору (Axe To Fall). Звучание группы притерпело мало изменений со времен того же Jane Doe, однако стало четче что ли, яснее, понятнее, громче; не зря на обложке изображена вылитая Jane Doe, в профиль, только теперь мы видим не только лицо, но и некоторые изгибы её тела, её шею и т.д. Быть может в один прекрасный день она предстанет перед нами полностью, во всей красе.
И давайте избавим этот альбом от ярлыков "лучший альбома года", "лучший альбом за все их творчество". Это альбом Converge. Жемчужина.

Reap What You Sow, antytezę otwieracza. Bannon w życiowej formie, Ballou tłucze gęsto 150 motywów na sekundę. Intensywność, która poraża. Solo, żywcem wyjęte z Kill'em all Metalliki. Mniami.
Axe To Fall: komplikowania struktury rytmicznej ciąg dalszy. Niby coś to przypomina, może fragment albumu Jane Doe?
Effigy - trochę psychodeliki w stylu Queens of the Stone Age nie zaszkodzi? Co utwór to lepszy pomysł. Mieszają gęsto. Krew, pot i łzy.
Worms Will Feed. Zaczyna się wolno, na zoverdrivowanej gitarze. Shellac gra Pink Floyd. Utwór trochę przypomina sześc pierwszych z albumu No Heroes. Troszeczkę. Jakieś pojękiwania Banoon'a. Dysonanse gitar. Na koniec antyrytmiczna sekcja zagrana w stylu Slayer'a rzekłbym.
Wishing Well, Sonic Youth'owe intro, średnie tempo. I miazga. Converge idzie na wojnę. Od połowy utworu szybsze temp i znów wyjebane solo! Cholera, jak ONI to robią?
Damages zaczyna się Meshuggahowatym motywem, po czym wchodzą bębny i przepotężny tłumiony riff. Karuzela się kręci się. Piękna końcówka utworu w stylu Neurosis.
Losing Battle zalatuje trochę In Utero Nirvany. Początek. Bo i potem standardowo, z tym, że na wokal wpieprzył się Ballou - w refrenie.
Dead Beat to z kolei taki mroczny hardcore. Gęsta perkusja, i mam pytanie? Czy panu Ballou gryf się nie kończy? Gra jak szalony 15490 motywów na sekundę.
Cutter. A wyobraźcie sobie, że to zżyna z God Dethroned, okraszona bluesowymi mini solówkami. Brzmi niesamowicie.
Slave Driver - następna wycieczka w ambitniejsze rejony. Średnie tempo, stary dobry Converge.
Cruel Bloom to wycieczka w wodewilowe klimaty. Ballada, na wokalu Steve von Till. Która na koniec przeistacza się w istną kanonadę gitar i core'owego śpiewu.
Wretched World. A oto i ich własna interpretacja Uriah Heep, rzekłbym. Czyste wokale. I tylko boli trochę, że przypomina Relief Genghis Tron'a w warstwie wokalnej.

Diagnoza:
Kazali czekać na swój następny album całe trzy i pół roku. Warto było.
Wyważona produkcja, która nie trzeszczy jak w przypadku No Heroes, pomysły na utwory i w końcu wykonanie. Poraża.

Ostatni utwór trochę w stylu Relief Genghis Tron.

Werdykt:
Jedni te płytę pokochają (Lubię placki), inni znienawidzą (Daj kamienia). Znienawidzą za to, że jest ona tylko rozwinięciem pomysłów z Jane Doe i No Heroes. Tu nie ma żadnej rewolucji. To jest zespół, który wypracował własne brzmienie i niech się tego trzyma.
Płyta zabija i poraża i sprawia, że ciągle chce jej się słuchać. Także od dziś do bliżej nieokreślonego momentu jestem hardcore'm.
