  • An Introduction to The Artist Rock Leagues

    Jun 26 2009, 17h35 por HumanRejection

    Introduction

The large amount of rock and artists leagues, that range from the UK to Poland, the US to Japan, are the new way for Last.fm users to really say who are the best artists from a particular country. Perfect for our large community of music stat-heads, they are based on football (soccer) leagues but have taken their own life with great success, constantly improving and exponentially growing in numbers. Ultimately they give you, the humble Last.fm user, and the chance to say "my favourite band is best!", so come and join in!

    The Leagues

There are many different leagues in the FIRA ring and is growing with strong numbers of member’s aswell.

These leagues are often in the same set of rules than each other but the leagues work a little differently. So always read the rules before starting your votes, but the main thing is to have fun and vote for the artists you believe in the most.

    The Italian League

The Italian League is run by myself and has just started in this ring. So, I would be greatly thankful for any user to join me and the others in the Italian leagues. Now, I need users to pick there favourite 10 artists in the Qualify thread. This means whatever artists that come in the top 20 of the voters vote will go into the Serie A for the first season and the other top 22 will go to Serie B. So have you got a favourite in mind and want them to be in the Rock and Metal artist leagues? Hop on down, join and play! You won’t regret it.

    The British League

The British League is ran by the intellectually enhanced British resident Gilaventi. He has been running the British League for over a year now and have completed a very successful two seasons. They have just successfully entered the third season of the British artists league, so travel down there and join up!

    German Leagues

The fantastical tYhJyYsRuLeS is the creator and leader of the German League and also creating the artist league game itself! The German league has been going since April 2008 and has completed two seasons. So, like German rock artists or know a lot of them? Get down there!

    The Spanish League

A new league to the ring. Post your favourite bands in the Vote Thread.

For a full list of leagues please go to this thread for an updated list.

No idea why I did this...

    1. How did you get into no.29?
Devendra Banhart: Saw him perform A Sight to Behold on Jools Holland late one night awhile back...have been a fan ever since.

    2. What's the first song you ever heard by no.22?
Liars: Probably Grown Men Don't Fall in the River, Just Like That. They definitely had the ESG thing going on on that record.

    3. Whats your favourite lyric by no.33?
Melt-Banana: "I'm standing alone in a drug store
with some toy coins in my hand... "

    4. How did you get into no.49?
Past Lives: When Blood Brothers broke up, I was always more interested in what Jordan Blilie and Morgan Henderson were going to do. When they started up a new group with Mark on drums and Devon Welch, I was intrigued.

    5. How many albums by no.13 do you own?
    Faith No More: Four

    6. What is your favorite song by no.50?
TV on the Radio: Staring at the Sun

The Jam: Not particlularly...alot of Paul's social commentary evokes anger more than sadness.

    8. What is your favorite song by no.15?
Lightning Bolt: Tocar2 Morro Morro Land...especially since the performance on Peel. Beautifully structured chaos.

    9. What is your favorite song by no.5?
The Fall: Fiery Jack..."I said eat this grenade"

    10. Is there a song by no.6 that makes you happy?
Frank Zappa: Oh, so many to choose from...I'll go with Latex Solar Beef from the Fillmore East 1971 show. Every time the chorus kicks in with Flo & Eddie..."Talkin' bout ya hemorrhoids, baby!", you can't help but laugh.

    11. What is the worst song by no.40?
Refused: Anything before Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent.

    12. What is your favorite song by no.10?
Swell Maps: Vertical Slum...the ultimate combination of minimalism and raw energy. Nikki Sudden, you will not be forgotten.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving no.30?
Flight of the Conchords: When I saw them in Philly back in April...good times.

    14. What is your favorite song by no.38?
    DNA: TocarSize

    15. Is there a song by no.19 that makes you happy?
Muse: TocarFeeling Good...stellar rendition of a song that has been covered by everyone on Earth.

    16. Is there a song by no.25 that makes you sad?
Adam and the Ants: These questions are pretty fucking repetitive.

of feeling good and we're gonna stay there as long as we think we should."

    19. Who is a favorite member of no.1?
The Mars Volta: Cedric Bixler-Zavala...I'm a vocalist, so of course.

    20. Is there a song by no.14 that makes you happy?
Battles: TocarBad Trails...it's all in the serene ambiance that is the build-up of this track. Beautiful.

    21. What is a good memory involving no.27?

    22. What is your favorite song by no.16?
The Stranglers: TocarPrincess of the Streets

    30. What is you favorite song by no.8?
Gang of Four: TocarI Found That Essence Rare

    31. How many times have you seen no.17 live?
The Pretty Things: Unfortunately never. They still do shows occasionally...but it's not the classic line-up.

    32. Is there a song by no.44 that makes you happy?
    Portugal. The Man: TocarSugar Cinnamon

    33. How did you get into no.12?
Make Up: When I moved to the DC area a few years back...I really got into NOU and saw that Ian did some "gospel yeh-yeh" shtick afterwards with mostly the same line-up. Sort of a mouthpiece for a faux revolutionary group with heavy 60's soul and garage rock influences. I was finally advised to check them out by a couple of friends at Sound Garden in Baltimore, and I haven't turned back.

    Spacemen 3: Worst? Nah.

    Deerhoof: The Runners Four

    41. Is there a song by no.31 that makes you happy?
The (International) Noise Conspiracy: Anything from Survival Sickness...who cares if they borrowed ideas from Svenonius and co.(who, in turn borrowed ideas), their first two albums were downright kick ass rock 'n roll records in their own right.

    Intimacy

Just like their heroes Radiohead, Bloc Party sprung a real surprise on us with this one. Two days warning and BAM! - the album was available for a fiver to download. Of course the record company will recoup expenses with the physical release in October, but the release of third album Intimacy surprised many, especially with it being within 18 months of their previous effort, A Weekend in the City.

However, in this day and age, surprise internet releases are all the rage, and once the hubbub has died down, the real question emerges - is it any good? Even after extensive listens, the jury is still out there. For me, Bloc Party are one of the very best indie bands out there in the current climate of "what NME says, goes", and their first album Silent Alarm, has to be up there amongst the great debuts of the 21st century. However, AWITC was an album of two halves, the first part trying to be Silent Alarm MK II, the second part packed with apathetic ballads completely unreminiscent of Alarm tracks such as TocarThis Modern Love and So Here We Are, finishing off with the complete anticlimax of SXRT.

When Flux was brought out, some thought it to be jumping on the new-rave bandwagon, but it was just an indication of the direction Bloc Party intended to move in. electro has been infused heavily into this album, most noticeably in first single TocarMercury, which has polarized opinion far more than any track I've heard in recent times. I personally think it to be a winner, a song to get sweaty to in clubs, a remix song without the remix.

Opener TocarAres also shows what the Party have been listening to, stealing the drum pattern almost wholesale from the The Chemical Brothers' 1997 hit TocarSetting Sun. This album pleasingly also goes back to the roots of just rocking out in the style of early songs such as Helicopter, Halo showing such a predilection. Gordon Moakes's drum fills bubble just under the surface, proving once again he's one of the finest drummers around merely by daring to circumvent the 4/4 tradition.

Kele Okereke's sometimes cringeworthy lyrics make a return - "You used to take your watch off before we made love" opens Trojan Horse, an otherwise fairly unmemorable track. [track artist=Bloc Party]One Month Off
proves they haven't left behind the sound of their first record completely, sounding mostly identical to TocarShe's Hearing Voices.

An album highlight is TocarZephyrus, taking the best parts of AWITC's TocarWhere Is Home (the hushed choral bits) and covering the same album's opening track TocarSong for Clay (Disappear Here). Again, the latter half of the album is where it starts to drop off a little, but TocarBetter Than Heaven and apparent new fan favourite TocarIon Square still provide listenable moments.

The early mention of In Rainbows now seems far more relevant. The two albums share a lot of similarities - if you listen to the two keenly you might notice, since Bloc Party are self-confessed worshippers of Radiohead. However, they are also comparable in that they are great albums, but in the light of previous work, they seem to look limpid and pale. This is by no means a bad album, and nowhere near as disappointing as AWITC, and a definite purchase is recommended. As for me, I'm still firmly in the Silent Alarm camp.

  • How varied is your music taste?

    Mai 24 2009, 16h25 por flenzovoort

'First, make a list of your overall top-20 artists. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, add up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.'

Thu 14 May – The Great Escape

Oh yes. The best festival experience!

    Thursday
    Video Nasties
Mika Miko - shouting into a telephone, yes.
Titus Andronicus - shame the audience didn't do much.
    The Joy Formidable
    S.C.U.M
    Peter Bjorn and John
    We Have Band

    Friday
Micachu and the Shapes - Really like this band. Shame the technical side was down, despite that they were funny throughout :)
Chew Lips - Disappointing. It was all i'm wearing a bright outfit and doing some crazy moves, can i be Karen O now? Every song sounded the same and really what were the two guys doing there.
The XX - Probably the most unexpected performance, really good.
Polly Scattergood - Kate Bush but holding her own at the sametime!
Crystal Antlers - Amazing. Lots and lots of energy, the percussion guy was really entertaining to watch too.

    Saturday
bang bang eche - I love this bands energy. How they all swapped intrustments and coming behind the barrier and playing there instead.
    VV Brown
Die! Die! Die! - I think atleast the two girls infront of me were scared. I liked it.
Gang of Four - Amazinggggg. So happy to have finally seen them live. But I'm more than disappointed that their set was cut.
    Mr Hudson

    Top three acts!
    1. Gang of Four
    2. bang bang eche
    3. Crystal Antlers
