Biografia

Gang of Four are an English post-punk group from Leeds. Original personnel were singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bass guitarist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. They were fully active from 1977 to 1983, and then re-emerged twice in the 1990s with King and Gill. In 2004, the original line-up reunited but in November 2006 Allen was replaced on bass by Thomas McNeice and Burnham on drums by Mark Heaney. Singer Jon King departed some time during 2012.

They play a stripped-down mix of punk rock, funk music and dub reggae, with an emphasis on the social and political ills of society. Gang of Four are widely considered one of the leading bands of the late 1970s/early 1980s post-punk movement. Their later albums (Songs of the Free and Hard) found them softening some of their more jarring qualities, and drifting towards dance-punk and disco. Their debut album, Entertainment!, ranked at Number 490 in Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and is listed by Pitchfork Media as the 8th best album of the 1970s.[2] David Fricke of Rolling Stone described Gang of Four as “probably the best politically motivated band in rock & roll.”

History

Gill and King, the primary creative forces in the band, brought together an eclectic array of influences, ranging from the neo-Marxist Frankfurt School of social criticism to the increasingly clear trans-Atlantic punk consensus. Gang of Four was named by a member of the Mekons when while driving around with Gill and King he came upon a newspaper article on the intra-Party coup against China’s “Gang of Four”.

    I only have their first two albums, Entertainment! is very good but I think I like Solid Gold even more. And it's nice to hear a melodica in some songs. Reminds me of Augustus Pablo

    I bought 'Entertainment!' recently by pure chance. I was in HMV and I saw 'Gang Of Four' and remembered somebody had told me that another band I'd been listening to sounded like an "American Gang of Four", so at 8 quid I gave it a whirl. I had a hunch it would be good but not this good. Without a doubt, its one of the best albums I've ever bought. I got two great Pavement CDs for 3 pound each too (top bargain) but they just couldn't match the find that was me listening to GoF for the first time.

    I am so angry with how this this wonderful, incredible band is being managed on here. Every song off their masterpiece album 'Entertainment' pops up in scrobble as the remakes of the songs which appeared on their much lesser 'Return the Gift'. I have to skip over some of my favorite songs sometimes, in hope that they'll pop up again later off of the 'Entertainment' album. This hope has never been fulfilled. I'll often times play last.fm on my Xbox and walk around the house. When my friends are there and they hear these songs, I have to explain why I have hearted them and why they suck. (420)
