Tedious, sparse production job from Premier and Guru's flow is similarly monotone at times. Has some solid tracks in Check the Technique and Chump, but it sounds like they were still trying to find themselves artistically (not surprising considering how young the two look on the album cover). An overrated stepping stone to a truly great and much more realized album like Moment of Truth.

At least one of the top 5 hip-hop albums of all time. It would be impossible to pick just one as the best.

The best Hip-Hop album of all time, period. Hands down. No matter what people tried before, and what people will try in future. There is not a single song in this album that is less than sublime. I tried to make a Gang Starr playlist, taking only the best songs from each album. As I was adding songs from Step In The Arena, I realised I'd have to add them all; that's how good it is. Such a variety of styles, of themes, of moods, of beats. "Once you step in the arena, cheater; / You're gonna be a- / Mazed when you gaze at the armor on this leader, / Fully clad and glad to find a cause, I won't pause; / fear is a joke, slowpoke, I'm like claws..."

I Aree with the comment below, Guru is At His Best Here And The Beats Are Really Good, Not Premiers Typical Mono Sound we all know, But The Beats Are Awesome None To Less.

Love all Gang Starr albums but I think this one and Daily Operation tie for place number one. I think I'd go with this one instead though. Moment of Truth is too long and the quality is not as good at the second half, Hard to Earn is too repetitive, The Ownerz simply doesn't have the same appeal although still one of the best albums from this decade and No More Mr Nice Guy is the duo finding their 'balance' and not yet what they'll become. This one is pretty much flawless.

this album is a cornerstone of golden age hip hop. when this came out, it was one of those tapes that got played and played and played until the shit just broke...there's not one flawed track on Step In The Arena.
