First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.








Признаться честно, здесь не 100 исполнителей как обычно, а всего 85. Всяких авторов музыки к блокбастерам я безжалостно удалил из статистики. Тем не менее, эти графики демонстрируют нам кое-что, чего не наблюдалось ранее: резкое падение популярности ближе к концу выборки. Такое впечатление, что существует некий стандартный набор классических композиторов, за пределами которого - полная безызвестность.

To be honest, there are not 100 artists as usual, but only 85, because I deleted all the authors of popular movies' soundtracks without a trace of pity. The graphs exhibit something new to us: a rapid decrease of popularity near the end. It seems like there's a standard set of classical composers, and composers out of that set are rather obscure.




А здесь видно, что "музыку заказывают" три самых известных композитора: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven. Отрыв от общей массы довольно большой.

From that plot we can see, that three most famous composers dominate in classical music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven.





А это график удельного числа прослушиваний для различных "классиков". Здесь ситуация еще хуже, чем в джазе - среднее значение составляет всего 9.5, максимальное значение этого показателя имеет неведомая широким массам D'Oyly Carte Opera Company - 36 прослушиваний на слушателя.

Here is specific number of scrobbles for classical composers and performers. The situation here is even worse than with jazz music. The average value is 9.5 and the maximal value belongs to quite unheard-of D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which has 36 plays per listener.

The histogram just confirms the fact that nowadays people listen to classical music without enthusiasm.




Наибольшее число сообщений в рупоре имеют наиболее популярные композиторы, как и следовало ожидать.

As one can expect, the most popular composers have the largest number of messages in their shoutboxes.




А здесь мы вновь видим эффект "потенциального баръера", заключающийся в том, что лишь исполнители с удельным числом прослушиваний выше среднего могут иметь большое число сообщений в рупоре. Правда, здесь он несколько хуже выражен из-за малости этого среднего значения.

And here I see the effect of "potential barrier" again: only artists with more-than-average number of plays per listener can have a lot of shouts. But in classical music it is less present than in another genres because of low average specific number of scrobbles.

The Turkish Five (Turkish: Türk Beşleri) is a term used to describe the five pioneers of western classical music in Turkey. They were all born in the first decade of the 20th century and they composed their most outstanding music in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, especially during the presidencies of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and İsmet İnönü. They all shared contacts with the two presidents and were highly encouraged as such, both on a personal level and also through the general drive towards westernization in Turkey.

Also, these are for promotion only and samples! I'm not letting people download complete works of composers! These composers are hard to find anyway, even if I had the complete works I wouldn't share with anyone just because of this.

I managed to find some of the works of Ahmed Adnan Saygun (classicsonline.com, bought it online) but having a hard time with other composers. Especially for Ulvi Cemal Erkin. I really like his Scherzo in Symphony No. 1 but that is all I have. Searched all over the web and couldn't find his symphonies... Same thing for the others. What I'm trying to say is, if you could help me finding these, I'd really appreciate it!

Go through your top 10 artists and add up the total number of listeners. Divide the average by the number of The Beatles fans (The Beatles are the artists with the most listeners). That is your "mainstream percentage".

The flaw in this scheme is that The Beatles are not the artists with the most listeners! Coldplay have 2042903 listeners, so that's really only 22%! Assuming that Coldplay are indeed the artists with the most listeners!

Looks like Stravinsky and Fauré let me down, whereas Le Sage and Kosma...

Jaha, då har ännu en vecka gått. Denna vecka har gått fruktansvärt fort! Det är en helt annan tidsräkning när man går i skolan, en minut motsvarar nästan 5 minuter när man är ledig. Eller så är det bara jag som har mycket att göra. Det har varit en hektisk vecka, jag har dock tagit det lugnt nu i helgen, vilket jag verkligen behövde!

Idag har jag tvättat och städat! Det är mycket imponerande! Jag är så nöjd med mig själv! Anledningen till att jag städade är ett - mamma kommer på tisdag, och två - jag har insett att jag är helt sjukt lik Nodame! Det är läskigt! Därför tänkte jag att om jag städade mitt rum kanske jag kunde bevisa för mig själv att jag inte alls är som henne. Jag vet inte om jag lyckades...

Det har varit en trevlig vecka, trots sömnbrist och plugg, plugg, plugg. Kaffe och Red Bull är mina bästa vänner. Mitt försök till att skriva blogginlägg lite ofta misslyckades, som man kanske ser. Det går helt enkelt inte, jag önskar att jag hade tid, men det har jag inte. Jag har även bytt bild, denna är lite roligare än den förra. Ja, jag är medveten om att jag ser ganska läskig ut. Bilden är förresten tagen för två år sen! Det tror man inte.

Jag vet inte riktigt vad mer jag ska säga. Just nu sitter jag och lyssnar på en massa musik som jag lyssnade på i högstadiet, jag kollade även på bilderna för ett tag sen. Lite nostalgisk blir man allt, men jag vet mycket väl att mitt liv jag har nu är bättre. Men jag saknar SP bajsmycket.

Jag kollade på en film jag fick av VG före jul innan idag. Se inte på den! Den är asbra, men jag grät som ett litet barn som tappat sin klubba! Jag tänker inte säga vad den heter. Men jag ska nog se på den nån gång under veckan och gråta lite igen. Det är ganska skönt att gråta. Nu låter jag jätte emo, vilket jag inte alls är. I alla fall... ha en bra vecka!

I was going to recommend something serious and cerebral, along the lines of Gabriel Fauré's Pie Jesu but a funny thing happened on the way to the forum...

I found an old video of Sarah Brightman performing the now definitive version of Pie Jesu, by Andrew Lloyd Webber. As lovely as it was and as much as I enjoy listening to Sarah, unfortunately I am old enough to remember when she first made it big. Unfortunately or fortunately? Because this is one of my all-time favourites.



Hot Gossip were ITV's response to Pan's People, the dance troupe on BBC 1's Top of the Pops. Hot Gossip were camp, raunchy and most of all, didn't take themselves too seriously. It might interest some people to know they were created by Arlene Philips, who also choreographed all those naughty routines. I knew them from The Kenny Everett Video Show, which as we know, was all done in the best possible taste.



So when Sarah Brightman, one of the Hot Gossip dancers and someone most of us hadn't heard of, appeared with the group with 'I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper' you can imagine the impact. The song makes references to Flash Gordon, which was still being repeated on BBC 2 in the 70s, there's a quick reference to the intergalactic music from Close Encounters of The Third Kind, which is also referenced in the line "What my body needs is close encounter three", and last but not least, Star Wars was absolutely huge and all things space related were being devoured by us.



The song went to number six in the UK charts in November 1978. Thirty years later and we are still space obsessed, although perhaps it's more of a space/time continuum. 2008 is definitely David Tennant's year as Doctor Who. If we were devouring all things Star Wars in 1978, we are doing the same with all things Doctor Who now. Recent reports suggest Tennant has been offered £1.5 million to return as The Doctor in the next series. Back in the 70s, it was Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, the good Doctor's assistant, who was this loved.




I hope you enjoyed this ramble into nothing in particular. More silly nonsense next week, I promise. It's August, what can I say...
