Saturday Session

Just a reminder that these are what LastFM thinks I should listen to, not necessarily what I think you should listen to.

1. Bob Marley - "Natural Mystic"
I know this song quite well, but this arrangement is very different. Much slower, more horns, and binghi drums. In fact, if this were the first version I heard, I'd say it was a rare misstep in the Marley ouvre. Not a great version of one of the best songs to come out of Jamaica.

2. David Coverdale - "Don't You Cry"
The former lead singer of Whitesnake and Deep Purple, so we have some arena-styled rock. I know people go nuts about this sort of thing, but this track is overblown and very much too sappy.

3. Duquende - "Tu Camisita De Flores (Tangos)"
A spot of flamenco, so there's no knowing what we'll get today. I'll be perfectly honest at this point and admit that I really don't know how to tell one flamenco vocalist from another, so he sounds alright.

4. Black Uhuru - "Sponji Reggae"
This is an atrocious-quality live version of the song, but the quality of the song itself can still come through. Michael Rose's vocals and the wonderfully supple melody behind him just work out perfectly. Shame it's recorded by a congenital halfwit, though.

5. Trelldom - "Sonar dreyri"
Trelldom was one of the first black metal acts I heard, and I remember it turned me off the style for ages. This track actually demonstrates exactly why - while it contains all of the features of a black metal track, it does precisely nothing with them for ten minutes. Boringness should be a crime.

6. Göksel - "Karar Verdim"
A bit more Turkish pop, again with a female vocalist. While the music is good, her voice doesn't suit it at all - she's gone with the "irritating little girl" sound for some reason. Not good.

7. Troll Collins - "Meet Ze Monsta"
Being a similar artist to That 1 Guy, this must at least be interesting music. Well, I'm not sure it is. He's got a half-hearted drum loop and a vocoder going on, but nothing is helping me like it.

8. Murat Boz - "Maximum"
Some more Turkish pop, and with a sort of hip-hop flavour to it. Decent music, and the vocalist is rather impressive. He's still just starting his career, it seems, although he should be bound for big things.

9. Gülşen - "Adı Aşk Sebebimin"
Female Turkish pop again. Rather derivative and boring.

10. Jose Merce - "Arrengao (Blues)"
And we finish with some flamenco. Well, flamenco that starts with a blues guitar and in fact sounds more as though it's from the Deep South than Iberia. It's an interesting idea, although I'm not sure it really works here.

Turkish Rock Festival Mannheim (UPDATE: semi-official videos available)

I am back from Mannheim, and my head is still overfull with all the memories. I am already starting to forget some parts :-(

Despite of a chaotic organization the event was really fantastic and i can't understand, why it was far from sold out. TurkishRock.com claims only 3000 tickets were sold.

After one and a half hour delay, the crowd was already slightly annoyed, Gökçe started. Among songs i did not know she played both songs that are available on last.fm, "Aradım seni" and "Vay be ben Neymişim".

Next was Gripin. Their highlight was of course the duet with Emre Aydın "Sensiz İstanbul'a düşmanım", who was next. He played "Git" and "Belki Bir Gün Özlersin".

After that a table with a Macbook was carried on stage and Manga, one of my favorites started. They played "Bir kadın cizeceksin". They played one song with a surprise guest, Alper Ağa of Karakan/Cartel fame (But i still don't quite get turkish HipHp).
And of course they played Dursun Zaman with Göksel.

Göksel performed "Günün Birinde", "Depresyondayım", "Karar Verdim" and "Bi' Seni konuşurum".

Next was Seksendört. They played K.G.B. but i can't remember the other songs, because i haven't listened to the album that much.

Next was Badem. I liked them live a lot better. They played "Kara değil mi?" and "Sen ağlama". And i can't remember the rest, because i was already excited waiting for "Kalpsiz", their last song and duet with Özlem Tekin. She was the only one who did not bring her own band with her, she used Badem as her background band, which was good because way too much time was already spent due to breaks. So unfortunately Özlem Tekin without keyboard cascades. But her songs work with guitar arrangements too. She played "Yar Bana Varmadı", "Aşk Herşey Affeder mi?" and my favorite "Dağları deldim". Way too early her performance was finished :-(.

Next was Yüksek Sadakat. They played and "Belki Üstümüzden" and ???

I took a food break, and after that found all the space in front of the space occupied, because next was Teoman.

I only remember Paramparça, because he performed mostly older songs. Counting the hands, cameras and mobile phones in the air, his performance was the highlight for most people in the audience.

Following the next highlight Erkin Koray.
He showed off with his German skillz by giving a little speach in German, and he played Feshupanallah, Arap Saçı, Çöpçüler, Estarabım and more songs i did not knew.

Now followed the hard part. A lot of people already started to leave, others were only waiting for Mor ve Ötesi.

Gece Yolcuları played "Değer mi?" (which i like very much) and "Hüzün".

Aslı played "Dans Etmeye ihtiyacım var", "Su gibi", "Yardımcı olmuyor" and "Kördüğüm". Unfortunately the time was way too late for ballads. A lot of people sat down or took a sleeping break.

Nev also played ballads, but his fans the most fanatic so they did not care about the time and sang every line with their hero. He sang way too many songs. But finally at around 6.00am Mor ve Ötesi entered the stage and with Harun greeting "Guten Morgen!" everyone was awake again and ready to sing "Bir derdim var".

They played "Şirket", "Küçük Sevgilim", Cambaz, Re, Sevda Ciceği and at the end "Deli"

UPDATE: http://festival.meddah.tv/ offers a preview of the offical video material. Unfortunately the sound quality is very bad. Some instruments and the crowd are missing or too quiet.

Vallahi bugün pek bir eğlenceli geçti.CUCE üyelerinden Ceren'le bir Bakırköy'ün altını üstüne getirme mevzusu söz konusuydu.Carousel-Galleria-Town Center-Teria gibi 4 mekanın yanı sıra Morgül ve Taş Koleji sokaklarını da aşındırdık.Peki neler konuştuk?Dedi kodu yaptık...Ne konuşması?Vallahi kuzu sarması,showmen,armut demeden herkeslerden bahsettik.Pek bir eğlendim.Kaynata kaynata bir hal olduk=)Bir de Göksel'in yeni albümünü alıverdim.Şu an dinliyorum.İlk dinleyişte yorum yapmayayım;çünkü daha çok atze benim için.Biraz zaman geçmesi lazım.Haydi bakalım...

One of my "Overall Top Artists", Göksel released a new album, "Ay'da yürüdüm" so i predict she will reenter my Top 3 soon :-).
After i listened to the album for the first time, i am not sure which tracks i like most.
Yarabbi Şükür the first klip released somehow reminds me of the Sabır klip, but it is even worse. I wonder what kind of people it should target.
Taş bebek is probably remarkable, another cooperation with (parts of) Manga, but it is not as good as Dursun Zaman imho, and does not really fit to the other tracks. Oh, and Teoman's voice does not work with dance music at all, he should stick with rock. But still, i think i kind of like the track.
In the Shoutbox someone liked Sabrettim best, and i like this track too, because of the (synthi?) background sound.
The last track Kardan Adam also sticked in my memory, because today was another summerday so i was not really expecting a song about Snowmen. And it contains rock/metal e-guitar parts, more of these in the future please.

Last week i watched Sınav at UCI sinema. Nice movie, unfortunately the ending was a bit weak.

But the soundtrack is great and very compatible with my current musical taste.
3 songs by Nil Karaibrahimgil, 2 by Özlem Tekin, one by Duman and Dursun Zaman by Manga & Göksel.

4 hafta oldu ve hala şu yazıların giriş kısımlarını beceremiyorum ve konuya direk giriş yapıyorum. Bir gün gelir bunu da beceririm, kim bilir :)

Geçen hafta bahsettiğim konser iptallerinin son bombası da cumartesi günü yaşandı. Jay Z, Istanbul ve Rusya konserlerini güvenlik kaygıları nedeniyle iptal ederken, kendisini muhteşem bir seyirciden, bizleride güzel bi görsel şovdan mahrum bırakmış oldu, ne diyelim, kendisi bilir. Bu tip iptalleri duyduğum zaman biranda sinirlerim tepeme geliyor, çünkü abimiz 4 gün kala googledan Türkiye'yi aradım, terör varmış orda gelmem gibi bir bahaneyle iptal etmiş konseri.

Bu tip saçmalıklara rağmen her gün birbirinden güzel haberler gelmeye devam ediyor, ve konser ajandalarımıza yeni isimler ekleniyor. Son haftanın eklenen en büyük bombası, 40 yıla yaklaşan kariyerlerinde ‘Living Next Door To Alice', ‘I'll Meet You At Midnight', ‘Needles And Pins', ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', ‘If You Think You Know How To Love Me', ‘Oh Carol', ‘Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone' gibi birbirinden büyük hitler ortaya çıkarmış Smokie. Echoes Productions tarafından hafta içinde açıklanan konser 16 Aralık Cumartesi Yeni Melek Gösteri Merkezinde olacak.

Önümüzdeki haftanın etkinliklerine bakacak olursak, 19 Eylül Salı günü Taksim Hayal Kahvesinde son zamanların popüler yerli isimlerinden Pinhani sahne alacak. Eğer hafta içi Ankara'ya yolunuz düşerse de yine Salı günü MEB Şura Salonunda gerçekleşecek olan Arto Tunçboyaciyan ve ona sahnede eşlik edecek Armenian Navy Band Orchestra'nın konserini benim içinde izleyin.

Bu hafta ülkemizde 3 konser verecek olan 80lerin popüler Alman synthpop grubu Alphaville, turnenin ilk ayağında 21 Eylül Perşembe günü Refresh The Venue'de sahne alacak. 1984 de çıkarttıkları ilk singleları Big In Japan ile billboard listesinde 1. sıraya kurulan grup, kariyerleri boyunca dans pistlerini şenlendirecek bir çok hit çıkarttılar. Grup, şu anda devam eden turnesinin ardından 2006 sonlarında yeni albümünü çıkaracak ve eğer bu konserlerden birine yolunuz düşerse bu yeni şarkılardan bir kısmını önceden canlı canlı dinleme şansına sahip olacaksınız. Turne Cuma günü Ankara'da Odtü Vişnelik Tesislerinde Çim Amfi ve Cumartesi günü İzmir'de Soyer Kültür ve Sanat Fabrikası konserleriyle son bulacak.

Haftasonunda İstanbul'un en hareketli sahnesi ise Studio Live olacak. 22 Eylül Cuma günü Manga ve Göksel'in sahne alacağı mekanda, Cumartesi günü sahneyi Gripin ve Suitcase devralacak. 24 Eylül Pazar günü ise sahnedeki müzik biraz sertleşiyor. Viyanalı Death Metal grubu Pungent Stench, 1992 den sonra ikinci kez ülkemizi ziyaret ediyor. Sahnede onlardan önce yer alacak grup ise UÇK Grind.

Istanbul'un en önemli elektronik sahnelerinden biri olan Secret Club, sezonu Berlin'den 2006 Haziran çıkışlı "The Freakshow" albümlerinin turnesi kapsamında sahne alacak Electrixx ile açacaklar. 23 Eylül Cumartesi günü gerçekleşecek açılışda geceyi FG 93.7 djlerinden 7 Erhan açacak ve yine aynı radyodan Ser-touch ile noktalayacak.

Aynı gün Punk severler ise, ülkenin en önemli punk gruplarından Rashit'i Arka Sokak'ta izleyebilirler. Aynı gecenin sonunda ise rock müzik severlere Ekşi Limon'da sahne alan Lityum'u dinlemelerini tavsiye edebilirim. Geçen hafta sonu 1. yılını dolduran grup, izlediğim kadarıyla Taksim'in en iyi bar gruplarından biri. Lityum her cumartesi gece yarısından sonra Ekşi Limon'da sahne alıyor.

Hafta sonu, biraz daha büyük bir yaş grubuna hitap etse de, önemli diğer iki etkinliğinden birisi TCDD'nin 150. yılı kutlamaları kapsamında Sirkeci Garı'nda Cuma günü bu etkinlik için kapatılan Avrupa Peronu'nda Tuluyhan Uğurlu, Doğu Ekspresi projesiyle sahne alacak. Aynı günün diğer etkinliği ise Kuruçeşme Arena'da Enbe Orkestrası'na konuk olacak Ajda Pekkan.
