  • Desert Island Jukebox

    Dez 30 2009, 17h05 por tihsymtae

Regular listeners of the Sound Opinions podcast know about their "Desert Island Jukebox" series. Every few shows, one of the two hosts will pick a song that they "can't live without" or that they would take with them to live out their lives on a deserted island.

A couple of weeks ago they devoted the entire episode to this question. They asked a number of famous artists what track they would take to the desert island. Here're are some of the results:

Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand chose TocarSuzanne while his bandmate Nick McCarthy chose Ohio

Peaches chose TocarI Would Die For You

Laurent Brancowitz of Phoenix chose Histoire de Melody Nelson.

Craig Finn, Tad Kubler and Franz Nicolay of The Hold Steady chose TocarI Will Dare, Kashmir and mercury respectively.

Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit chose TocarStay Positive

What would I choose? Well, in a way this is an artificial question. The questioner is trying to get me to identify my "favorite song," but not only can I not pick one, I'm inclined to think that there is no such thing. Depending on my mood, the activity I'm engaged it at the moment and various other features of the context, I'll prefer to listen to one song rather than another. I wouldn't say that I prefer TocarHard Times Come Easy to TocarLateralus and yet there are many times when I would rather listen to the former over the latter.

So if I interpret the question literally, what song would I prefer to listen to if I were stuck on a deserted island for the rest of my life? Well, that depends. If we're talking a tropical island, then I'd have to choose something by Marisa Monte. If I'm going to spend the rest of my days on a white sand beach drinking green coconut water, I think I'd like to do that listening to, say, TocarUniverso Ao Meu Redor But if we're talking a deserted island somewhere above the arctic circle where I'd spend the rest of my days hunting seal in desolate frozen landscapes, then I'd have to go with something by early Opeth, probably from Morningrise. And if I had to limit it to one song, I'd go with TocarBlack Rose Immortal since it's the longest and the one I'm least likely to tire of.

But again, these are not my favorite songs. They're songs that I think would nicely fit the circumstances.

  • Music of 2009 - my review

    Dez 30 2009, 17h04 por Idizzen

So, 2009 has come to an end, and since I had nothing better to do, I decided to write this little review thing.

Here is my top 15 list of most listened bands in 2009 according to Last.fm:
    1. Coldplay
    2. Muse
    3. Snow Patrol
    4. Placebo
    5. Glasvegas
    6. Broder Daniel
    7. Kent
    8. Death Cab for Cutie
    9. Radiohead
    10. Elliott Smith
    11. Green Day
    12. Joy Division
    13. Morrissey
    14. White Lies
    15. The Reindeer Section

So, where to begin? I am not quite sure. What I am sure of though, is that 2009 was one of the best years in a long time when it came to discovering old music. Not many of the records released in 2009 are worth mentioning here. But the lack of any good new music has forced me to listen more to oldies this year, which I am really grateful for.

But let’s start with records released in 2009. The release I was most excited about in the beginning of the year was 21st Century Breakdown. I used to be really into Green Day a few years back, and was really stoked about their new album. Too bad, I didn’t like it that much, apart from a song or two.

I somehow stumbled upon To Lose My Life in January. I didn’t like it at all when I first heard it, I thought it sounded like a little bit more upbeat version of Joy Division, and didn’t listen to it again for a month or so. But when I heard it the second time, it felt like something hit it. It was so amazing. I couldn’t stop listening to it. It was all I listened to for a week or so. I was so happy when I found out that they were opening for Coldplay, so I got to see them this year.

The best album of the year in my opinion is probably The Resistance. From the moment I first heard United States Of Euroasia/Collateral Damage, I knew I was going to like the whole album. I searched Youtube for more songs from the album after Muse had played their Teignmouth gigs. The first song I found was Undisclosed Desires, and I thought it was really, really good. It is still my favorite track from the album.

During 2009, I became totally obsessed with Snow Patrol. I saw them live twice in May, and both times were brilliant. When Up To Now was announced, I nearly cried with joy. And when I heard it for the first time, I fell in love with every song on the album. Even though I had heard all songs but three before the release of the album, I still appreciate listening to it a whole lot.

At first, I thought as a whole, Battle For The Sun was pretty cringe-worthy. But then it started growing on me. I started liking a couple of songs, and then suddenly I liked the whole album. I had not been a fan of Placebo before, so this was the album which made me start liking their music. I still think it’s their weakest album to date, but it’s worth mentioning here, since it’s the album that introduced me to their lovely music.

Kent is probably Sweden’s biggest rock band. Their new Röd came as a pleasant surprise, because I have never been a big fan of them. Almost all songs on that album are very good, and I am looking forward to seeing them live in February.

My guilty pleasure of the year must be The Boy Who Knew Too Much. I do love it to bits though, even though it’s slightly embarrassing to admit it. I am seeing Mika live in March, and I bought the ticket to the show before I had even heard his new record. But it was all I had hoped for it to be; sweet, happy, dancy and a bit silly. Mika never fails to satisfy me.

Other albums released in 2009 that are worth mentioning:
    These Four Walls
    Lungs
    Spring Ricco
    Friendly Fires
    Years of Refusal
    Kings & Queens

2009 has also been a good year for me when it comes to discovering older music.

Of course I knew Joy Division before 2009, it’s pretty hard not to when everyone is acting like they were gods. I had seen Control, and had had TocarLove Will Tear Us Apart on my iPod for years (I discovered it while watching Donnie Darko a couple of years back). I had never given them much thought before 2009, I thought they were pretty decent but nothing special. Then I went into a record store in Stockholm and found Joy Division’s Greatest Hits on sale. I thought why not and bought it. I am so glad I did, because they’re now one of my favorite bands. The first song I fell for on Greatest Hits was Disorder, and repeated that songs for hours one day at school. Then I fell in love with Atmosphere and TocarTransmission. I am considering buying Closer and Unknown Pleasures next year, because I am yearning for more songs by them.

I had had Plans on my computer for years, but had not really listened to it before 2009. When I had decided that Plans was awesome, I downloaded all Death Cab’s CDs, and needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed.

I’ve discovered so many new bands and artists this year, and it’s impossible for me to write them all down here, but just to mention a few other new additions to my music library; there are The Reindeer Section, Elliott Smith, Belle and Sebastian, The Kooks, The Postal Service and The Shins

As for 2010, there aren’t many released announced yet. And therefore, there isn’t much I’m looking forward to when it comes to new music. Some records I’m looking forward to are the new releases by Eels, Frightened Rabbit, Friendly Fires and MGMT.

  • favourites from 2009

    Dez 29 2009, 0h25 por Shandyla

Perhaps should be called '2009 Favourites beginning February' as I didn't have the words to reiterate all my favourites from my January list, already posted on my lastfm journal.

001 Sleepless – The Decemberists || So The Decemberists’ new album came and went without the sizable footprint once left by The Crane Wife. But this hideaway track plucked from the Dark Was The Night charity album gripped me from the first. It has that terrifying power which can shatter that little piece of watered hope you’re still clinging to. Devastating and unapologetic.

002 TocarTiger Mountain Peasant Song – First Aid Kit covering Fleet Foxes || Feels like cheating to have a cover song in this list, but I fell in love with this song afresh when I heard this rendering, pure as water over glass.

003 TocarLong Ago – Auld Lang Syne || Auld Lang Syne’s debut album effortlessly hijacked my entire June (and most of my July and August). TocarWhy We Cry, TocarMy First Soul, TocarRed Feather, the reworking of TocarWhere My Fortune Lies – all pure poetry (a newspaper called them “folk songs where parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are replaced by gunpowder, tears, whisky and blood”). Yet for once it wasn’t the disheveled lullabyes of the album that demanded my attention most - it was TocarLong Ago. Unforgiving, overpowering, ripping up the dirt with its fingernails as it goes. Favourite song this year. Favourite album this year. I love this band so hard.

004 TocarMy First Soul – Auld Lang Syne || I didn’t add this song until the last minute. Then I caved. Talking about one song from Midnight Folly doesn’t do justice to how much I adore this album. I listened to this track constantly when I was still at home, walking my dog on that familiar childhood route through the woods, the moors and down to the loch. Everytime I listened it seemed more magnetic and profound than the last. I still don’t understand how americana can tear up my little Scottish heart so hard. Maybe it's the Rabbie Burns reference in the band name.

005 Nothing Better Than A Journey To You – Justin Vernon || So enchanted with Bon Iver this past year, and aching for more, I was inspired to unearth some of Vernon’s earlier work. And fell upon this title, a lyric I’ve been longing to hear. Journey is a little too raw at times – it doesn’t have the winged quality of the Bon Iver album, but shares something of that honest vagabond sentiment with The Decemberists’ at the bus mall.

006 TocarBest Regards – A classic education || This number smiled sunnily my way at the beginning of the year. Listen after a tough day at work – it will make you bound from one pavement slab to the next. Infact, it’s guarenteed to make you look like an idiot in public places.

007 Highway Steam – Hooded Fang || Fast approaching and bold as day, a song that seems to be blistering with happiness, but isn’t showing off about it.

008 Here’s Looking At You, Kid – The Gaslight Anthem || A little teacup heartbreaker that I’d never heard before. The way he sings ‘I would have been your fool’ really shoots me down here.

009 Sunlight - The Harlem Shakes || not my usual thing at all, unabashed sky-spat pop but unavoidable in the best of ways.

010 Northern Lights – The Bowerbirds || I saw the Bowerbirds on an October’s night in Paris, and watching the expressions play across Phil Moore’s face it’s easy to believe the Chimes lyric ‘I draw my breath/from an ancient earth.’ Yet Northern Lights was the song that lingered; it keens and stretches and climaxes with a radiance so rich and wise and warm it’s almost painful to the senses. (Also received prettily was Bright Future, equally worth tumbling into.)

011 Two Weeks – Grizzly Bear || The effortless choice from ‘Veckatimest’. Seems to fool you with its pop-sounding, peppery beginning before soaring utterly onwards to unarguable brilliance.

Here's the version I saw them play live in Paris - with unexpected Feist!

012 TocarThe Lakes of Canada – The Innocence Mission || Sad-hearted and silvery like bells over frosted water. Sublime enough to blur your vision at the edges.

013 All the Kings Men - Wild Beasts || Thankyou Wild Beasts for unpredictable, surprising, interesting music. Sort of bounces around you like an uncontrollable new puppy. Um. My powers of description are beginning to fail me, let me finish up.

    Finally…

014 Landslide – Sin Fang Bous covering Fleetwood Mac || Another cover song. No apologies. This is one of my favourite songs, so it’s difficult to describe the delight I felt at stumbling accidentally across this video.

Thankyou for helping me to discover these the torture garden for best regards (and auld lang syne, of course), audiography for the lakes of canada and said the gramaphone for all the king’s men. That sounds so poetic.

Things to look forward to next year:
New Auld Lang Syne album hell yes hell yes hell yes
    New The Magnetic Fields album
New Midlake album (and a concert in Feb!)
    New The Lovely Sparrows album
    New Seabear album
    New Frightened Rabbit album

01 .Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American (2001)

Best Tracks: Cautioners, A Praise Chorus, If You Don’t, Don’t, Hear You Me, Bleed American

Yup, Bleed American at #1. Despite the fact that it was raked across the coals by Pitchfork, it was my quintessential album during those early university years. I probably won't have held it such high regard had it been released a few years ago, but the album still holds up today. Jim's dual vocals with Rachel Haden on tracks like "Cautioners" are close to perfection. It's one of the few albums i'd say is consistently strong from top to bottom. I think the album, (and the band in general) are pretty underrated and get unfairly lumped with other pop-rock/emo bands. Chase This Light didn't help to shake that stigma, but i'm hopeful for the new album.

Arcade Fire at #2 was a no-brainer. Avalanche probably would have had that spot if Matt chose to omit "Song for the Girl" from the record but it's easily his best solo record to date. Kid A is everyone's favourite, and with good reason, - being the album that re-invented Radiohead and ushered in the "digital age" of music. In Rainbows was a worthy follow-up in 2007. Both National records were fantastic, Broken Social Scene were one of the best live bands of the decade and thanks in part to it's all star cast featured on You Forgot It In People. M.I.A.'s long awaited follow up to Arular exceeded expectations and propelled her to stardom, thanks to the success of Paper Planes, even though the rest of the album is just as good. And Sufjan Stevens second album in his now abandoned fifty states project was epic. And that's it for list making for a long time.
