Jewel Kilcher has been one of my top female singer-songwriters for more than a decade already. She has not had it easy, though. She peaked (both commercially and artistically) early on in her career and due to the lackluster sales of Goodbye Alice In Wonderland (2006), Atlantic Records refused to renew the contract with her; in other words, they dropped her. After that she signed to a small label called The Valory Music Co., which is situated in Nashville. Her latest studio LP, the long-awaited country affair Perfectly Clear was released last year. I contemplated for a while whether I should include her kitschy out-of-character pop album 0304 in my chart, but finally decided not to. As much as I love her (her music at least), I am a bit confused by whatever statement she was trying to make with it. If it was recorded for fun, then let it be. It didn’t work for me on any level. Her versatile, elastic voice has wide range and is always easy on the ears, but over time she has lost some of the richness of tone and feeling that (amongst other things) made her debut Pieces Of You a folk masterpiece.
