Franz Ferdinand é uma banda formada por quatro rapazes de Glasgow, em 2001. Aliás, a pessoa que deu nome à banda existiu: Francisco Ferdinando foi um arquiduque austro-húngaro, cujo assassinato deu início a I Guerra Mundial.

Bob Hardy (baixo), Nick MacCarthy (guitarra), Paul Thomson (bateria), e Alex Kapranos (vocal e guitarra) lançaram um EP independente em 2002, que garantiu, no ano seguinte, a contratação pelo selo Domino.

No ano de fundação da banda, Hardy e Kapranos já pensavam em fazer música, quando resolveram convidar McCarthy. Este último, um pianista clássico e baixista, que tocava bateria em outro grupo, mesmo sem ter nenhum conhecimento anterior com o instrumento. Para completar a banda os três convocaram Paul Thomson para assumir a bateria. Mas ele também tocava guitarra então, eles eventualmente trocavam de instrumentos.

Os ensaios aconteciam na casa de McCarthy até que encontraram um armazém abandonado que logo levou o nome de Chateau. Neste lugar, alem de ensaiar, eles faziam festas na qual uniam música e arte. Isso por que Hardy é formado na Glasgow School of Art, e Thomson sempre posava como modelo.

O primeiro disco da banda rendeu o apelido de “Scottish Interpol”, depois disso eles ficaram o resto do ano acompanhando bandas como o Hot Hot Heat e Interpol. “Franz Ferdinand”, lançado no início de 2004, deu ao grupo inúmeros prêmios graças a canções como “Take Me Out”.
