So I am quite bored at times, and this is how I deal with it now. I also suck at reviewing albums, so go fall on a sword if you don't like my style. Also the albums chosen to be reviewed are pretty randomly selected.

Techno Animal - Brotherhood of tomb
The name might suggest some sort of indie rock band who think they got clever names, but instead it's something else. It's...Distorted Rap! It has the "noise" tag and all that on the last.fm page. Anyway, it's pretty bad because most of the tracks are instrumental, and they sound kinda like if Frank Klepacki would do a rap oriented soundtrack to a game. People who like dälek might be interested in this. Nothing special though.

October Falls - Sarastus
Okay, so it's acoustic guitar being played in a folky way. It doesn't sound like a cool concept, but it's actually rather nice. Makes you think of summer and forests. October Falls have a black metal tag on their last.fm page, so their other stuff (or related) might be black metal, but this is the only album I've heard.

Hell Icon - In Umbra Spectare Magnificentia
This is pretty grim. Ambientish ritual stuff with black metal influenced screaming. The album is just one track that lasts for about 43 minutes. It's really interesting and "kvlt". Awesomeness as it should be.

The Psyke Project - Dead Storm
Finally! The new Psyke Project! I hate to sound excited. This is beautiful as the rest of their material. I'm glad they didn't go as much post-metal as they did on Apnea. Vocals are still as harsh as they used to be, though there are more of these clean "shouts" on the tracks than on the previous records, which aren't really that awesome. Polaris and Utopia Is Not An Option are my favourite tracks so far. This album is one of the best releases of the year, definitely.

I, as a seasoned and serious gamer, always say : good music makes people want to play a game. Blizzard, LucasArts and Bioware (and/or Black Isle) are definitely the leading names in this area. 3DO, Electronic Arts and some other companies are not bad too. I sometimes find myself installing Baldur's Gate, Monkey Island or Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne (Not to mention the constant joy of WoW addiction, arising from time to time) only to live the music and the atmosphere, despite the fact that these are games that I played hundreds of times/hours.

The other day, while listening to the Original Theme Music of Monkey Island 3 (Curse of Monkey Island, a legendary game and equally admirable work of Michael Land ), I extensively focused on this matter, why I constantly play particular games, especially older ones, and found that it's without doubt, the music. Fine music combined with the atmosphere of the game, becomes one with the gaming experience, having the greatest say in a game's quality.

The best composers in this area (to my knowledge) are
Michael Hoenig (Baldur's Gate series)
Frank Klepacki (Westwood's C&C composer)
Matt Uelmen (Diablo and various other Blizzard music, remember Tristram?)
Nobuo Uematsu (whole Final Fantasy series)
Mark Morgan (quite an underrated artist who composed the Fallout series' music)
Michael Land (as mentioned above, composer who is responsible for a great percentage of extreme popularity of Monkey Island series)
Duane Decker (Rise of Nations owe its nice ethnic musical infrastructure to him)
Stuart Chatwood (Prince of Persia)
Glenn Stafford (A genius musician of Blizzard, Warcraft series and more)
Jason Hayes (Another Blizzard veteran : music maker of "Starcraft", what more can I say?)
and of course the famous Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain (Storm, Earth and Fire... Heed my Call!)

These are my top composers/artists, and I am extremely confident that they know what they are doing. I admire every each of them, for making the games we play doubly exciting and worthy of playing. And those who mute the music of a game while playing, because it might distract you or diminish your micro or something, you are n00b. You haven't yet digested the true meaning of "Gaming".
As I said, I am a devoted player of PC games, but at the same time, I'm striving in the ways of musicianship and composition, then I ask myself, why don't I get into this awesome job of making games more efficient and meaningful? hopefully I am going to be able to contribute to this great field of both fun and art in the future.

And finally, here's an interview with Blizzard's top three composers, I strongly recommend any Blizzard fan to read the whole story. It's fantastic. I admire these guys.

It's once again time for some .FLACtastic fun with music library ripping. This time I've got just five albums because the sixth one would've been Miami Vice I and I'm going to save it and all the other Miami Vice albums for the next time.


The Breakfast Club (1985)

John Hughes' hit teen flick from the '80s, which is pretty awesome to watch even though the whole message about parents not understanding their kids can get a little preachy and tiresome after you watch the movie for the sixth time. Features 'The Brat Pack' as the kids and Paul Gleason as the angry principal whose monitoring their eight hour long detention. The film made Simple Minds' a household name in The United States and for some fans ruined their sound for a long time since the pop song Don't You Forget About Me provided them a succesfull formula of sure-and-safe stadium rock sound.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert Soundtrack (1996)

The original Red Alert is, at least for me, the epitome of a perfect light real-time strategy game. It's not a surprise that one of its most memorable aspects is the absolutely kick-ass score by Frank Klepacki. The official soundtrack features a selection of songs that cover roughly 3/4 of the complete score and showcases Klepacki's talent for creating sounds that range from gritty ambient to fast-paced electronica to crushing heavy metal and majestic orchestral pieces.

Notable tracks: Dense, Radio (actually Radio 2) and, of course, the anthemic Hell March


The Incredibles (2004)

Pixar, alongside Valve Software, is IMO the only studio capable of creating a solid and entertaining 3D animation. Even better is when Pixar is paired with Brad Bird who seems to have the touch of Midas when it comes to cartoons and animated feature films. The Incredibles is a fresh take on the superhero fable and is often considered to be one of the best 3D animations ever, entertaining both kids and adults (but mostly adults, lol). Since the setting is an alternative late '60s environment, the music is naturally fit for a spy movie... and it's, excuse the pun, incredible.

Independence Day (1996)

An idiotic but so goddamn entertaining Roland Emmerich disaster movie where the president of United States is Mr. Cool Guy who likes to kick some alien ass in his fighter jet and Jeff Goldblum hacks into an alien mainframe with a Mac. It's a really grand movie and boasts one of the most pompous scores ever composed. David Arnold is Mr. Stars and Stripes when it comes to movie composers.

Notable tracks: The Day We Fight Back, The President's Speech and the most bloated End Titles ever created in the history of mankind. I mean, seriously. It goes over the top so many times during the finale that... well, you'll have to listen to it yourself. Holy $#!&. Awesome.


MDK (1997)

Possibly the wackiest and surrealistic FPS game ever made and entertaining as hell. The game sounds and looks very dated by now but despite the crude quality of both graphics and sounds, the ambient and atmosphere is something else and well worth experiencing. The game is laughably short, featuring only about five levels or so but each and every one of them are unique and memorable. Tommy Tallarico's score is one of the game's better features and I believe the published soundtrack features each and every track (albeit in a slightly rearranged and finalized forms). Unfortunately, the last track included is an awful techno remix instead of Billy Ze Kick's awesome cover of Non Non Rien N'a Changé which was featured in the ending FMV.
