  • Top 40 from 2009

    Dez 6 2009, 20h13 por Kevin_Raven

So 2009 isn't quite over yet, but here is my top 40 artists chart for the past year, with short explanations for some of the artists:

    1 Dark Moor: 569 scrobbles
Still my favorite band, the band that got me into power metal as well as metal in general.
    2 Blind Guardian: 489 scrobbles
Maybe a bit artificially high on my charts because of the number of tracks in Nightfall in Middle Earth, but still deserving of a high spot.
    3 Dream Theater: 468 scrobbles
Saw them in July in Asheville, and listened to Black Clouds & Silver Linings about a million times before the show.
    4 Queen: 466 scrobbles
    5 Helloween: 398 scrobbles
6 Nine Inch Nails: 390 scrobbles
I probably wouldn't have listened to NIN half as much if it wasn't for the fact that The Slip is free and Ghosts I-IV is really cheap. Thanks, Trent.
    7 Led Zeppelin: 385 scrobbles
    8 Opeth: 349 scrobbles
Everyone should listen to Opeth. Even if you don't like metal.
9 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: 342 scrobbles
Easily the most metal artist on my charts.
    10 King Crimson: 298 scrobbles
    11 Machinae Supremacy: 263 scrobbles
Another good free album, Deus Ex Machinae put this artist high on my charts.
    12 Extol: 250 scrobbles
Listened to The Blueprint Dives a lot. If nobody told me, I would never be able to guess that they are the same band that made Burial, which is also great, but in a completely different way.
    13 Tool: 247 scrobbles
    14 Lacuna Coil: 245 scrobbles
    15 Iron Maiden: 230 scrobbles
    16 Holy Blood: 227 scrobbles
Of the bands I started listening to in 2009 for the first time, I think Holy Blood is my favorite. I can't wait to hear Oskord once they release something...
    17 Nightwish: 222 scrobbles
    18 Talking Heads: 206 scrobbles
    19 Rush: 196 scrobbles
20 Rhapsody of Fire: 190 scrobbles
    21 Yes: 188 scrobbles
There used to be an artist image of Chris Squire with a zebra stripe jacket and triple neck bass with a caption that read something like: "Scientists have determined that it is physically impossible to find a picture more prog than this." That always made me laugh.
    22 Angra: 185 scrobbles
    23 JT Bruce: 164 scrobbles
I have to say something for all the artists with free stuff - JT Bruce is great if you like technical instrumental prog metal. You can download three albums for free on Jamendo, and you can buy his latest (and best) album, Universica on his website.
    24 Sonata Arctica: 163 scrobbles
    25 Tourniquet: 153 scrobbles
26 The Allman Brothers Band: 146 scrobbles
27 Theatre of Tragedy: 142 scrobbles
    28 Antonio Vivaldi: 141 scrobbles
I listened to a lot more "classical" music this year than I used to, which is something I'm happy about.
    29 Cynic: 138 scrobbles
    30 Narnia: 134 scrobbles
    31 Ensiferum: 127 scrobbles
Saw them at Volume 11 Tavern in Raleigh in November (my car was hit and had to be towed along the way, forcing us to walk part of the way, but it was worth it).
    32 Frédéric Chopin: 120 scrobbles
    33 Depeche Mode: 118 scrobbles
    34 NESkimos: 112 scrobbles
Their albums have tons of short songs, so they are a bit overrated on this chart. Video game cover bands are one of my guilty pleasures.
    35 ZAO: 109 scrobbles
I've had The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here for years, but it wasn't until 2009 that I really started listening to it a lot. Usually I'm sort of turned off by metalcore, but I think Zao is pretty good regardless of their genre.
    36 XOC: 107 scrobbles
Another video game band with lots of short songs and an unusually high number of scrobbles...
    37 Black Sabbath: 106 scrobbles
    37 VNV Nation: 106 scrobbles
39 Johann Sebastian Bach: 103 scrobbles
    40 DragonForce: 101 scrobbles
DragonForce? How did this get here... I guess when their new album came out I listened to it a lot.

    2010 predictions:
Jazz Fusion - I've been listening to Billy Cobham and I'd like to hear more of this. I've always wanted to listen to more Jazz, but I've found it inaccessible. I think I'll enjoy fusion a bit more.

Melodic Death - Since I like Ensiferum and Blackguard, I'd like to listen to more.

Thrash - I really enjoyed Gama Bomb (another artist with a free album available on their website), and I've never really explored thrash metal outside of Metallica/Slayer/Megadeth.

Less Power Metal - I'll probably keep listening to Dark Moor, Helloween, Blind Guardian, and the other artists I like, but I'll probably stop looking into new power metal bands in favor of some of the other genres I listed.

  • Would yesterday's classical composers be today's metalheads?

    Dez 3 2009, 4h50 por LordRama

Probably not. Let's see what they would actually be doing:

Johann Pachelbel - One of the world's leading producers of elevator music. His is the music you hear every minute of every day you spend in an office or airport, even if you never hear his name a single time.
Antonio Vivaldi - New age-style ambient with Eastern influences, along the lines of Robert Rich. (He wrote The Seasons, must mean he's all about nature and shit.)
Johann Sebastian Bach - Jazz fusion guitarist. Member of a commercially successful, if fairly traditional quartet.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - A member of a prog or post-rock band, something along the lines of Tortoise or Gastr Del Sol.
Ludwig van Beethoven - Post-punk guitarist and composer. Frequently trolls the last.fm Jonas Brothers shoutbox and racks up multiple banned last.fm accounts.
Frédéric Chopin - One of the most influential hip hop producers of our generation.
Johannes Brahms - Alternative rock guitarist. Uses alternate tunings with lots of power chords and an overall grunge-influenced sound.
Richard Wagner - He'd be a metalhead, but only because he hated Jews.
Claude Debussy - Ambient producer, frequently uses treated guitar-work and grainy washes of lo-fi found sound. Keyboards occasionally.
Erik Satie - Bassist in Enya's live band.
Charles Ives - Synthesist in a krautrock-influenced experimental rock band.
Igor Stravinsky - One of those electronic producers (idm, breakcore, whatever the fuck) who uses 16/173 time signature with lots of snare rushes. Frequently samples anime, crying children, and torture porn.

Well, there you have it. You will not find my analysis lacking.

  • Classical music

    Out 17 2009, 7h33 por BigglesTh9

By an impulse I can't explain, I'm at this moment listening to Last.fm artist radio, starting with Chopin. Of course, this means that the music I'm listening to is largely not Classical but Romantic, but there was no way I was going to title a journal entry "Romantic music".

Having not listened to most of these composers in any real depth before, I'm just going to drop whatever impressions come to mind.

Frédéric Chopin: Strongly impressed; great depth and variation in tone.
Ludwig van Beethoven:Can't hate on this cat!
Franz Liszt: Crisp and clean sums it up.
Franz Schubert: Not bad, but a bit pompous and schmaltzy.
Sergei Rachmaninoff: Slow-burner with some real punch.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: The guy had undeniable talent and made for a great movie; but I've always tended to see his compositions as too dense.
Johann Sebastian Bach: Always seemed a man's man to me; but his Badinerie is pretty fruity stuff.
Maurice Ravel: Could be described as "subdued", but has class.

  • 1984: A Love Story by Muse

    Set 24 2009, 1h37 por j_morrison

When it comes to a new Muse album, there are big expectations. Could they do better than their last output; 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations? After listening to Muse’s new album The Resistance, you hear that they’ve evolved their sound. Muse not only does progressive rock, but they squeeze in some pretty R&B songs about love and even a symphony for the last three tracks (Exogenesis). I’ll get back to that later, but let’s look down the track list.

The album starts with the aptly titled Uprising. The song sounds like a mix of Radiohead and Green Day oddly enough. The lyrics are anti-government, which is the common theme of the album. It seems Muse were reading ‘1984’ obsessively while making this record. Uprising is very catchy, which makes it appealing. It has a good beat and it’s easy to sing along to. The following track entitled Resistance deals with love being the only way to resist the oppression forced upon us. The chorus can be either annoying or catchy. The next song is called Undisclosed Desires, which is one of those pretty love songs that I mentioned earlier. It has a R&B feel and some pop as well. With lyrics like “I want to reconcile the violence in your heart”, you can see that Muse are their cheesiest here, but it works.

Track four United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage) is a rip off of Queen. Especially at the climaxing of the song: “Eura-SIA!, Eura-SIA!”. The second half of this song is a piece by Frédéric Chopin, so it does give the track some redemption. Guiding Light is next, which sounds like something you’ll hear on the radio in the middle of an eight hour car ride to your uncle’s house. It’s very plain and boring, and doesn’t deserve too much attention. Unnatural Selection is the longest song on the album, at almost seven minutes. It’s a good song, but too long. It will remind some of Muse’s older albums (Absolution, Origins of Symmetry). The lyrics continue the theme of anti-establishment with chants of “I want the truth!”. Again, corny but the song still works, it’s the most progressive on the album.

The seventh track, MK Ultra sounds like something you’d expect from this band. It’s very riff oriented and progressive like the track before. Now, this bring us to I Belong to You (+Mon Coeur S'Ouvre a Ta Voix). Two words: clarinet solo. Besides the strange, quirky beat, you get to hear what Matthew Bellamy sounds like when he sings in French. Never again should he be allowed to do that.

After the ups and downs of this album, we find ourselves at the final three tracks. Exogenesis Symphony Parts 1-3 (Overture, Cross-Pollination, Redemption), serve as the epic closure. Matthew Bellamy has sporadically been composing a classical arrangement throughout the last couple of years and he has put into fruition here. The moment Bellamy’s voice comes through on Part 1; you know you’re in for a treat. Part 2 starts off with a beautiful piano solo, which reminds you how good of a musician Bellamy really is. When the guitars and drums combined with Bellamy’s vocals kick in, the epic gets turned up to 11, but soon returns to his piano wizardry. Part 3 is the very classical sounding ending. It’s very sombre and the lyrics suggests we find another planet, so that we can start over and maybe get it right this time.

Overall this is a very strong record. With arrogantly catchy winners and an epic three part closer; The Resistance is yet another impressive addition to Muse’s discography.
