Yeah, I guess I get what you mean. Even in context, though, it still isn't one of my favorite songs on that album. That would be a difficult task, though, since there are so many great songs there.

I think the thing about "Stacy's Mom" is that it loses some subtext when removed from the rest of their catalog. Anyone who had been a FOW fan saw how the protagonist in "Stacy's Mom" was somewhat pathetic and destined to failure, and taken within the context of the entire FOW album is just one part of an overall story arc dealing with substance abuse and professional failure. So many FOW songs are about people whose carefully-assembled lives are fraying at the seams, and SM isn't a *huge* departure from that, but again, removed from the context of everything else it doesn't have very much meaning.

compared to the rest of their stuff, it is subpar. It isn't lame by itself and it is catchy, but if I had pick one song that would make them famous, it certainly wouldn't be stacy's mom.

Also, I absolutely HATE that they are famous for such a lame song like Stacy's Mom. Its so not representative of the band. One of my favorite performances is when they were on Conan O'Brien right after 9/11 and performed The Kinks' "Better Things."

I'm a huge fan but Traffic and Weather was a disappointing after the Welcome Interstate Managers and Out-of-State Plates. These Days is my favorite song.

I think there is a good thing about them being underrated, and it's the fact somehow we like this "weird shit" for the rest of people which I think is cooler as opposed to everyone else and their moms listening to it too.
